Book excerpt: Ozone (O3) prior to biofiltration can be an effective treatment strategy to achieve multiple drinking water quality goals. These goals include primary disinfection, improved removal of biodegradable organic carbon (generated as a result of ozonation), and oxidation of geosmin and MIB. However, O3 efficiency is dependent on source water characteristics, which impacts performance. This pilot study investigated the effectiveness of advanced oxidation incorporating O3 and hydrogen peroxide/ozone (H2O2/O3) with biofiltration (containing biologically active carbon (BAC) and anthracite) for geosmin and MIB control and disinfection by-product (DBP) precursor reduction. Application of 0.2 H2O2/O3 (mg/mg) prior to BAC resulted in optimal MIB and geosmin removal, especially in cold-water conditions (T = 10°C). In warmer temperatures (22°C), BAC alone was a suitable treatment technology for both geosmin and MIB. In terms of DBP precursor reduction, 0.1 H2O2/O3 (mg/mg) in combination with BAC was found to be the most effective treatment strategy with 37% THM and 10% HAA precursor reductions.

Book excerpt: UV/H2O2 advanced oxidation of drinking water for taste and odour control was performed using natural waters to optimize treatment conditions and monitor effects on chlorine decay, chloramine decay, and disinfection by-product (DBP) formation. The optimal dose of H2O2 for the removal of two taste and odour compounds in a raw water sample was 6-10 mg/L. From bench-scale tests, both UV alone (2000 mJ/cm2) and UV/H2O2 resulted in lower levels of chlorine and chloramine residuals when compared to controls. The application of UV/H 2O2 to natural water samples resulted in variable (water-specific) effects on DBPs, with considerable differences between concentrations in controls and in samples exposed to UV/H2O2. Results from this research highlight the importance of performing site-specific evaluations when establishing the feasibility of using UV/H2O 2 for taste and odour control, since it may have a significant impact on secondary disinfectant stability and DBP formation in the distribution system in some waters.

Book excerpt: Removal of natural organic matter (NOM) is an ever growing challenge for water utilities as many surface waters used for drinking water in the UK exhibit increasing organics levels and it is well known that these organics can lead to problems such as water colouration, unpleasant odour and taste, bacterial growth and disinfection by-products (DBPs) formation. NOM is traditionally removed by coagulation, however in the case of hydrophilic organic matter rich waters the performances of these processes are not able to remove sufficient organic matter leading to potential failures of DBP regulations. Here two advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) UV/H2O2 and TiO2 photocatalytic oxidation were studied to investigate how they could be integrated in a drinking water flowsheet to meet this challenge. Substantial structural changes in the organic matter were observed: loss of aromaticity and double bonded character, shift towards lower molecular weight (MW) more hydrophilic compounds and formation of oxygenated by-products. Although hydrophobic rich waters seem more suitable to AOP treatment as preferential attack of high MW hydrophobic compounds was demonstrated, no correlation was found between physical properties of nine NOM surrogates and removal by UV/TiO2. Dark adsorption onto TiO2 was shown to remove preferentially high molecular weight hydrophobic anionic compound such as tannic acid. UV/H2O2 combined with coagulation did not show any significant benefits in NOM removal as UV/H2O2 appeared to target similar components as coagulation (high MW, hydrophobic and charged) and to form by-products recalcitrant to coagulation. The combination of both AOPs with fresh GAC showed moderate benefits inAbstractiitrihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) and non purgeable organic carbon (NPOC) removal highlighting the role of size and surface chemistry on adsorption onto GAC. Biodegradability of the water did not exhibit any significant change after both AOP treatments within the studied conditions possibly due to insufficient UV irradiation and presence of organics recalcitrant to biodegradation.

Book excerpt: This research aimed to identify and understand mechanisms thar underlie the beneficial effect of ozonation on removal of pesticides and other micropollutants by Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) filtration. This allows optimization of the combination of these two processes, termed Biological Activated Carbon filtration. The study concluded that ozonation significantly improves removal of atrazine by GAC filtration not only due to the wellknown effect of oxidation of atrazine, but also due to the effect of partical oxidation of Background Organic Matter (BOM) present in water. Ozone-induced oxidation of BOM was found to improve adsorption of atrazine in GAC filters. Biodegradation of atrazine in these filters wasnot demonstrated. Higher GAC's adsorption capacity for atrazine and faster atrazine's mass transfer in filters with ozonated rather than non-ozonated influent were explained as due to ozonated BOM. Both can be attributed to enhanced biodegradability and reduced adsorbsbility of partially ozidated BOM compounds, resulting in their increased biodegradation and decreased adsorption in GAC filters.
