Book Oz Before the Rainbow

Download or read book Oz Before the Rainbow written by Mark Evan Swartz and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swartz reminds us in that various stage and screen dramatizations of Baum's story preceded and influenced the 1939 film. This richly illustrated book contains many rare photographs, film stills, sketches, theater programs, and movie advertisements from the different productions. Piecing together the Chicago and Broadway stage productions (1902-3) from contemporary reviews, surviving script pages, and published song lyrics, Swartz shows how Baum and his many collaborators worked to transform the book into a popular theatrical attraction -- often requiring significant alterations to the original story.

Book excerpt: A celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movie musical, this new book The Wizard of Oz offers a rare glimpse into the creation of the classic film, its creator L. Frank Baum, the Academy Award-winning score, the leading lady, and the Oz phenomenon that continues to captivate the world.Although Oz creator L. Harburg's superlative score, which includes "Over the Rainbow," considered the greatest movie song of all time. How Judy Garland won "Dorothy," her most enduring role, after 20th Century Fox refused to loan Shirley Temple to MGM.The birth of film's greatest canine star, Cairn Terrier, Terry, as Dorothy's little dog "Toto".The many everyday Oz expressions that come from the most oft-quoted movie of all timeHow the Wicked Witch of the West (renamed her Elphaba after Oz creator's initials) was remade "for good" in Broadway's Oz prequel Wicked. This celebration of the iconic film is a must-have for all Wizard of Oz lovers.

Download or read book Ozma of Oz written by L. Frank Baum and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ozma of Oz is the book in Frank Baum's Oz book series. It records the adventures of Oz with Dorothy Gale of Kansas, the Yellow Hen, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, Tiktok, the Cowardly Lion and the Hungry Tiger; and other characters. It is the first Oz narrative in which the majority of the events occur outside of Oz. Only the final two chapters are set in Oz. This conveys a slight change in theme: in the first book, Oz is the perilous land through which Dorothy must make her way back to Kansas; in the third, Oz is the book's conclusion and goal. Dorothy's wish to return home is not as strong as it was in the first book, and it is her uncle's need for her rather than her own that compels her to do so.

Book Arlen and Harburg s Over the Rainbow

Download or read book Arlen and Harburg s Over the Rainbow written by Walter Frisch and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the Rainbow" exploded into worldwide fame upon its performance by Judy Garland in the MGM film musical The Wizard of Oz (1939). Voted the greatest song of the twentieth century in a 2000 survey, it is a masterful, delicate balance of sophistication and child-like simplicity in which composer Harold Arlen and lyricist E. Y. "Yip" Harburg poignantly captured the hope and anxiety harbored by Dorothy's character. In Arlen and Harburg's Over the Rainbow, author Walter Frisch traces the history of this song from its inception during the development of The Wizard of Oz's screenplay, to its various reinterpretations over the course of the twentieth century. Through analysis of the song's music and lyrics, this Oxford Keynotes volume provides a close reading of the piece while examining the evolution of its meaning as it traversed widely varying cultural contexts. From its adoption as a jazz standard by generations of pianists, to its contribution to Judy Garland's role as a gay icon, to its reemergence as a chart-topping recording by Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, "Over the Rainbow" continues to engage audiences and performers alike in surprising ways. Featuring a companion website with audio and video supplements, this book leaves no path unexplored as it succeeds in capturing the extent of this song's impact on the world.

Book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

Download or read book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a children's novel written by L. Frank Baum and illustrated by W. W. Denslow. Originally published by the George M. Hill Company in Chicago on May 17, 1900, it has since been reprinted numerous times, most often under the name The Wizard of Oz, which is the name of both the popular 1902 Broadway musical and the well-known 1939 film adaptation. The story chronicles the adventures of a young girl named Dorothy Gale in the Land of Oz, after being swept away from her Kansas farm home in a cyclone.[nb 1] The novel is one of the best-known stories in American popular culture and has been widely translated. Its initial success, and the success of the 1902 Broadway musical which Baum adapted from his original story, led to Baum's writing thirteen more Oz books. The original book has been in the public domain in the US since 1956. Baum dedicated the book "to my good friend & comrade, My Wife," Maud Gage Baum. In January 1901, George M. Hill Company, the publisher, completed printing the first edition, which totaled 10,000 copies.

Book excerpt: "The Wizard is a lovable humbug, an artful salesman who gives his customers something to believe in, even if the thing is known to be pretend. Playing a role, he presents Dorothy's friends with talismans of brains, heart and courage and takes pride in showing them how he accomplished his illusions. Why do Dorothy's friends put their faith in the Wizard's abilities to grant their requests even after he has shown them that he has only been putting on a show? Perhaps his virtuoso performances inspire their own, and ours too. His humbug guides the philosophy of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the theatrical style of the first Oz musical, the extravaganza of 1902, with implications for "American" performance and participation"--

Book Adapting The Wizard of Oz

Download or read book Adapting The Wizard of Oz written by Danielle Birkett and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most beloved film musicals of all time, The Wizard of Oz represents an enduring family favorite and cultural classic. Yet there is much more to the story than meets the eye, and the MGM movie is just one of many ways in which it has been represented. In this lively and wide-ranging book, editors Danielle Birkett and Dominic McHugh bring together insights from eleven experts into the varied musical forms this great American myth has taken in the past century. Starting with the early adaptations of L. Frank Baum's story, the book also explores the writing, composition and reception of the MGM film, its importance in queer culture, stage adaptations of the movie, cult classic The Wiz, Stephen Schwartz's Broadway blockbuster Wicked, and the cultural afterlife of the iconic Arlen-Harburg songs. What emerges is a vivid overview of how music - on stage and screen - has been an essential part of the story's journey to become a centerpiece of American culture.
