Book Plasma and Spot Phenomena in Electrical Arcs

Download or read book Plasma and Spot Phenomena in Electrical Arcs written by Isak Beilis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-05 with total page 1137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to a thorough investigation of the physics and applications of the vacuum arc – a highly-ionized metallic plasma source used in a number of applications – with emphasis on cathode spot phenomena and plasma formation. The goal is to understand the origins and behavior of the various complex and sometimes mysterious phenomena involved in arc formation, such as cathode spots, electrode vaporization, and near-electrode plasma formation. The book takes the reader from a model of dense cathode plasma based on charge-exchange ion-atom collisions through a kinetic approach to cathode vaporization and on to metal thermophysical properties of cathodes. This picture is further enhanced by an in-depth study of cathode jets and plasma acceleration, the effects of magnetic fields on cathode spot behavior, and electrical characteristics of arcs and cathode spot dynamics. The book also describes applications to space propulsion, thin film deposition, laser plasma generation, and magnetohydrodynamics, making this comprehensive and up-to-date volume a valuable resource for researchers in academia and industry.

Book Industrial Chemistry of Oxides for Emerging Applications

Download or read book Industrial Chemistry of Oxides for Emerging Applications written by Lech Pawlowski and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Valuable insights into the extraction, production, and properties of a large number of natural and synthetic oxides utilized in applications worldwide from ceramics, electronic components, and coatings This handbook describes each of the major oxides chronologically—starting from the processes of extraction of ores containing oxides, their purification and transformations into pure alloyed powders, and their appropriate characterization up to the processes of formation of 2D films by such methods as PVD, CVD, and coatings by thermal spraying or complicated 3D objects by sintering and rapid prototyping. The selection of oxides has been guided by the current context of industrial applications. An important point that is considered in the book concerns the strategic aspects of oxides. Some oxides (e.g. rare earth ones) become more expensive due to the growing demand for them, others, because of the strategic importance of countries producing raw materials and the countries that are using them. Industrial Chemistry of Oxides for Emerging Applications provides readers with everything they need to know in 7 chapters that cover: technical and economical importance of oxides in present and future; fundamentals of oxides manufacturing; extraction, properties, and applications of Al2O3; extraction, properties, and applications of ZrO2; synthesis, properties, and applications of YBaCu2O7x; extraction, properties, and applications of TiO2; and synthesis, properties, and application of hydroxyapatite. Presents the extraction, production, and properties of a large fraction of oxides applications worldwide, both natural as well as synthetic multi‐oxides Covers a very important segment of many industrial processes, such as refractories and piezoelectric oxides—both applications constituting very large market segments Developed from a lecture course given by the authors for over a decade Industrial Chemistry of Oxides for Emerging Applications is an excellent text for university professors and teachers, and graduate and postgraduate students with a solid background in physics and chemistry.

Book Plasma Deposition of Oxide coated Cathodes

Download or read book Plasma Deposition of Oxide coated Cathodes written by Ryan Jonathan Umstattd and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vacuum arc deposition is employed to create a barium and/or strontium plasma which is subsequently deposited/implanted onto a nickel cathode substrate. The primary motivation for this work is the critical need for a reliable, repeatable, long-lived thermionic cathode for the production of high power, microsecond duration microwave pulses; such cathodes may also have applicability for lower current density continuous wave devices. This novel approach to manufacturing an oxide cathode eliminates the binders that may subsequently (and unpredictably) poison cathode emission. Removal of the poisoning mechanisms has yielded oxide cathodes capable of emission densities in the 20 A/sq cm regime. Cathode lifetime and emission may be varied via the control over the deposition parameters such as coating thickness, implantation energy, and plasma stoichiometry. The deposition is performed by generating a cathodic arc discharge at the surface of a barium or barium-strontium alloy rod. The metal plasma thus created is then deposited on the substrate which can be negatively biased to encourage implantation during the deposition process. The deposition is performed with sufficient background oxygen present to oxidize the highly reactive metal coating. The plasma deposition is monitored via a rate thickness monitor, an optical emission spectrometer for plasma composition information, and an electrostatic Langmuir probe for the determination of the plasma density and temperature profile. Cathodes thus produced are analyzed by drawing pulsed current at a constant voltage for various values of decreasing cathode temperature in order to generate practical work function distributions which provide an indication of the quality and expected life time of the cathode.
