Book Oxfordshire Classic Reprint

Download or read book Oxfordshire Classic Reprint written by Frederick Gaspard Brabant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oxfordshire Description of Oxfordshire without Ox ford may seem at first sight something like the proverbial Hamlet with the part of Hamlet left out. Of course, in any account of the history and topography of the county, Oxford itself must be frequently referred to. But as the city has already formed the subject of a previous volume of this series, I have felt at liberty to omit all description of it, and so to find space for an adequate account of the many charming places which are sometimes rather overshadowed by the ranscendent Interest of the University City. I hop: that I may help to dissipate the notion, not pemaps so common as it once was, that Oxford 13 a lov\ly city, but set down in a somewhat dull part Of England. Book Oxford Studies Classic Reprint

Download or read book Oxford Studies Classic Reprint written by John Richard Green and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oxford Studies The Oxford Historical Society has always recognized that the idea of its formation was due to John Richard Green, himself a native of Oxford and always deeply interested in the place of his birth and education. The prospect of a reproduction of his Oxford during the Last Century, as one of the volumes issued by the Society, has long been held out as an attraction to subscribing members. The opportunity has now happily arrived for carrying this long cherished intention into effect; and it is hoped that the present volume will serve to keep alive his memory as the true creator of the Society, and will also do something to encourage that interest in the past history of Oxford which he himself felt so strongly. The following brief account of the circumstances under which the papers forming the present volume were produced may be given here by way of introduction. In December, 1858, the proprietors of the Oxford Chronicle issued an advertisement headed Oxford during the Last Century, informing the public that it was 'intended under the above title to commence in the Chronicle, on Saturday, Jan. 1, 1859, in a series of papers to appear weekly, an account of some of the most memorable transactions connected with the City and County of Oxford, which have occurred in the course of the Last Century.' The advertisement concluded with an order-form 'To the Proprietors of the Oxford Chronicle, ' which all new subscribers were invited to sign, if they wished to secure a regular series, 'as no surplus copies of the Papers containing these Mementos of Oxford will be printed.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oxford Illustrated HE name of Oxford is accepted as pr of its very great antiquity it. Being the Celtic form Of Ousen-ford, the ford across the water, as in Ousen-ey, or Oseney, intimating the existence of an Island. The later name of Oxna-ford (though an early one), like the Ox-ford of today, is a departure from its original intention, though not by any means inappropriate, and is in agreement with the Arms of the City, in which appears the ox crossing the ford. For two centuries, between 626 and 827, Oxfordshire had been a frontier country between the West Saxons and the Mercians, and Oxford, itself a ville on the border of the Thames, the natural boundary-line between the two great kingdoms, had been the constant'scene of struggle, and had belonged alternately to Mercia and Wessex. In the year 827 Egbert of Wessex, having brought Mercia under his sway, consolidated his power, and Oxford being no longer a frontier town had peace and made rapid progress. Book The Place Names of Oxfordshire

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place-Names of Oxfordshire: Their Origin and Development This study of the Place-Names of Oxfordshire was originally a dissertation in the School of English Language of the University of Liverpool. It has since been entirely revised and largely rewritten for the purposes of publication. I have throughout had the very generous help of Professor H. C. Wyld, who has also been kind enough to read through the proofs. I wish to take this opportunity to express my indebtedness and gratitude to Professor Wyld for his stimulating instruction, both in the wider field of English studies and in the special domain of place-name research. To Professor Moorman, of Leeds, and to Dr. Mutschmann, of Nottingham, I am indebted for several suggestions as to etymologies. Many Oxfordshire clergymen have assisted by answering inquiries about pronunciations and other local matters. Finally, I have to thank Dr. Henry Bradley, who with great kindness read through the proofs and a portion of the manuscript. The book owes to his learning and insight many emendations and suggestions of the highest value. For any errors that may remain the writer alone is responsible.
