Book Rhodes Scholars Oxford and the Creation of an American Elite

Download or read book Rhodes Scholars Oxford and the Creation of an American Elite written by Thomas J. Schaeper and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2010-02 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year thirty-two seniors at American universities are awarded Rhodes Scholarships, which entitle them to spend two or three years studying at the University of Oxford. The program, founded by the British colonialist and entrepreneur Cecil Rhodes and established in 1903, has become the world's most famous academic scholarship and has brought thousands of young Americans to study in England. Many of these later became national leaders in government, law, education, literature, and other fields. Among them were the politicians J. William Fulbright, Bill Bradley, and Bill Clinton; the public policy analysts Robert Reich and George Stephanopoulos; the writer Robert Penn Warren; the entertainer Kris Kristofferson; and the Supreme Court Justices Byron White and David Souter. Based on extensive research in published and unpublished documents and on hundreds of interviews, this book traces the history of the program and the stories of many individuals. In addition it addresses a host of questions such as: how important was the Oxford experience for the individual scholars? To what extent has the program created an old-boy (-girl since 1976) network that propels its members to success? How many Rhodes Scholars have cracked under the strain and failed to live up to expectations? How have the Americans coped with life in Oxford and what have they thought of Britain in general? Beyond the history of the program and the individuals involved, this book also offers a valuable examination of the American-British cultural encounter.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oxford of Today: A Manual for Prospective Rhodes Scholars The chief aim of this book is to present in a concise, accurate and readable form the more important facts about Oxford University which are of interest particularly to prospective Rhodes Scholars and generally to the academical public. It is in a measure a descendant of a smaller volume written and compiled in 1907 by two American Rhodes Scholars, R. F. Scholz and S. K. Hornbeck, and entitled, Oxford and the Rhodes Scholarships. At that time the Rhodes Scholarships had been in operation but three years. Messrs. Scholz and Hornbeck creditably performed a valuable service in thus making available to prospective American students much information about the University which had been theretofore obtainable only with difficulty, if at all. Their book was published by the Oxford University Press in an edition long since exhausted. Another volume which formerly set forth many of the facts herein presented was the Oxford University Handbook, a semi-official publication issued from time to time by the Oxford University Press. The last edition (1914) is now out of print. Since 1914 many changes have occurred at Oxford. To name but two: Greek is no longer an absolute requirement for admission; and women students (previously admitted only to lectures and examinations) have now full University privileges and may receive degrees. Book The American Student and the Rhodes Scholarships at Oxford University

Download or read book The American Student and the Rhodes Scholarships at Oxford University written by Charles L. Williams and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Student and the Rhodes Scholarships at Oxford University: A Manual of Information What appears in the following pages was gathered, for the most part, during a seven weeks' visit at Oxford, England, in the summer of 1903 for the purpose of finding out all I could in that time about the famous University located there. In my search for information I was treated with the utmost courtesy by the many persons - professors, undergraduates and citizens - to whom I made known the object of my visit. My thanks are especially due Mr. J. Gilbert Wiblin, B. A. of Jesus College for many kindly suggestions and for an account of the more important doings at Oxford in recent months. Like all others who desire to become acquainted with Oxford University, I availed myself also of the indispensable help afforded by such books as Alden's "Guide to Oxford," Wells's "Oxford and Its Colleges," Brodrick's "History of the University of Oxford," Gardner's "Oxford at the Cross Roads," Andrew Lang's "Oxford - Historical and Picturesque Notes," Corbin's "An American at Oxford," Dyer's "Oxford as It Is," "The Student's Handbook to Oxford University," "The University Calendar" and "The Examination Statutes." It would, of course, be presumptuous for me to suppose that in this pamphlet there are no errors of any kind; because the "Oxford System," being so anomalous, is very puzzling to us Americans and because the more than twenty colleges differ from one another in many respects though having much in common. This, however, may be said with truth, that the author of this pamphlet has tried to make it a manual of reliable information for the use of those American youth who may aspire to become Rhodes Scholars at Oxford. Book Oxford and the Rhodes Scholarships

Download or read book Oxford and the Rhodes Scholarships written by R. F. Scholz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oxford and the Rhodes Scholarships: With List of Rhodes Scholars and Other Information Complete to the End of January, 1907 Our purpose to compile at once a short record and a working handbook has made our task largely that of selection and arrangement. We have drawn freely for information upon many sources. Thus, the first chapter is based almost entirely upon facts set forth in Mr. W. T. Stead's Last Will and Testament of Cecil John Rhodes; the second chapter is merely an arrangement from a copy of Rhodes's Will; the third rests upon information obtained from Dr. Parkin's written statements, especially from an article in the London Times of October 13, 1904, and from an address before the Royal Colonial Institute (December, 1904), and from answers which have been given to direct questions; the fourth is based on published 'Memoranda' of the Rhodes Trust; and the sixth represents a condensation or rearrangement, with some personal comment, of information from the official publications of the University of Oxford (see also Bibliography, p. 169). The fifth and the seventh may be said to have more of the personal colouring, but they, too, represent impressions gained from various reading and comparison of opinions, as well as of those of personal experience.
