Book Oxford Lectures on Poetry Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oxford Lectures on Poetry The words Poetry for poetry's sake' recall the famous phrase 'art for Art.' It is far from my purpose to examine the possible meanings of that phrase, or all the questions it involves. I propose to state briefly what I understand by Poetry for poetry's sake, ' and then, after guarding against one or two misapprehensions of the formula, to consider more fully a single problem connected with it. And I must premise, without attempting to justify them, certain explanations. We are to consider poetry in its essence, and apart from the flaws which in most poems accompany their poetry. We are to include in the_idea of poetry the metrical form, and not to regard this as a mere accident or a mere vehicle. And, finally, poetry being poems, we are to think of a poem as it actually exists; and, without aiming here at accuracy, we may say that an actual poem is the succession of experiences - sounds, images, thoughts, emotions - through which we pass when we are reading as poetically as we can.1 Of course this imaginative experience - if I may use the phrase for brevity - differs with every reader and every time of reading: a poem exists in innumerable degrees. But that insurmountable fact lies in the nature of things and does not concern us now. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Poetry: Delivered at Oxford I apprehend that the University, though she exacts nothing of the kind, in some degree expects that those whom she has honoured with her Professorships should give what they have to give sooner or later to the world. Such being the case, I need advance no other reason for publishing these Lectures. The lectures which I have delivered in my time are of course more in number than those contained in this volume, but owing to a variety of accidents my manuscripts fell into confusion, and have many of them gone astray. I am obliged, therefore, to content myself with what comes readiest to my hand. Of the Lectures that are missing I rather regret some, particularly two on 'Jason and Medea' and one on the tragedy of 'Hamlet.' My examination of 'Hamlet' ought to have come in between what I say of 'Othello' and what I say of 'Macbeth, ' and its absence leaves rather a disastrous gap in the Shakspere series. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aspects of Poetry: Being Lectures Delivered at Oxford The following pages contain twelve Lectures selected from those which I have delivered from the Chair of Poetry in Oxford during the last four years, some of which have already been published separately. To these have been added three Chapters (xi, xii, xiii), which were not delivered as Lectures in Oxford, but which are, by the kind permission of the Proprietor, reprinted from Good Words. Some might, perhaps, expect to find in this book a systematic theory of poetry, and a consecutive course of Lectures. But the conditions of the Professorship, which require one Lecture to be delivered during each Academic term, render it difficult, even if it were on other grounds desirable, to preserve such continuity. The audiences which listen to these Lectures change from term to term; so that a course, begun before one set of hearers, would have to be continued before another, and completed before a third. This renders it almost a necessity that each Lecture should be, as far as possible, complete in itself. As to the mode of treatment pursued, I have tried to adapt it, as well as I could, to the varied character of my hearers. Book excerpt: gather by investigating the title in a dictionary or other book of the kind, or else such a brief suggestion as might be offered by a person who had read the poem, and who said, for example, that the subject of The Ancient Mariner was a sailor who killed an albatross and suffered for his deed. Now the subject, in this sense (and I intend to use the word in no other), is not, as such, inside the poem, but outside it. The contents of the stanzas To a Skylark are not the ideas suggested by the work 'skylark' to the average man; they belong to Shelley just as much as the language does. The subject, therefore, is not the matter of the poem at all; and its opposite is not the form of the poem, but the whole poem. The subject is one thing; the poem, matter and form alike, another thing. This being so, it is surely obvious that the poetic value cannot lie in...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in Poetry: Law in Taste; Two Series of Lectures Delivered in Oxford, 1895 1900 Perhaps with natural piety the newly elected Professor of Poetry looks for guidance to the inten tions or the character of the Founder of his Chair. But here too search is in vain: of him little is known that is definite, nothing that is remarkable. Henry Birkhead must have been born in the first quarter of the seventeenth century, for he took his degree of m.a. In 1639. He appears to have been affected by the religious difficulties of his time, for shortly after taking his degree he became a Jesuit. Book The Art of Poetry

Download or read book The Art of Poetry written by William Paton Ker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Poetry: Inaugural Lecture Delivered Before the University of Oxford 5 June 1920 This sort Of miracle, this sudden glory, is an escape from the fashion Of the time, and the fashions of poetry, the successive schools are such that escapes are not so difficult as in the other arts. The history of poetry must be the history of schools and fashions. But the progress of poesy does not mean simply the refutation of old schools by new fashions. The poets have sometimes thought so like Keats in Hyperion, possibly; like Dante when he speaks of the Older lyric poetry as distained by comparison with the sweet new style, a'olce stil nuovo, of his own masters and fellows. But apart from the grace that you may find in the older fashion as a whole, taking it as an antiquarian curiosity, there is the chance, the certainty, that here and there among the Old songs you will come upon something new, independent, a miracle. In the old lyric poetry of Provence, which has been made a byword for conventionality and monotonous repetition, there are poems that seem to start afresh, worth dwell ing on and remembering. This is true also Of the other similar school of the German minne singers, which has been equally maligned.
