Book excerpt: In this suspenseful, romantic sequel to Apparition, Amelia Mackenzie, reluctant teenage clairvoyant, is caught up in a series of paranormal mysteries that threaten to unravel everything she believes in. After Amelia's best friend and secret crush Matthew dies in an apparent suicide, Amelia is heartbroken. Adding to her upheaval is the realization that she is firmly in the clutches of Matthew's ghost. Even after the barn in which Matthew had died is burnt to the ground, Matthew's spirit continues to stalk the ruins and Amelia must try to take care of his increasingly restless and reckless ghostly acts. It's not easy for Amelia to keep Matthew's presence a secret from her two brothers and her grandmother, Joyce. Amelia even tries to keep Matthew's 'survival' from her ghost tracking mentor Morris and his son Kip. But she is harbouring an even bigger secret these days: her deepening feelings for Kip. Unable to reconcile her longing for the flesh-and-blood Kip with her commitment to Matthew's ghost, she's pushed Kip away. Now, he's gone back to school in Chicago, and she can't get him off her mind. By the time Amelia and Morris are given a new ghost-tracking challenge, Kip has returned to Grey County for spring break, and long buried sparks are beginning to fly. As the trio set out to uncover the mysterious story behind a local inn that seems to harbour a ghost with a guilty conscience, desperate for forgiveness the mystery only deepens. Before long, a stretch of country road nearby reveals a strange history of its own--a series of fatal car accidents involving deer. Is there a connection between the haunted inn and the deadly stretch of road that it's on? With the rivalry intensifying between Matthew and Kip, Amelia's heart is in more conflict than ever. The ghost Matthew gets ever more comfortable in his phantom skin, which means Kip's headed for trouble, and only Amelia can protect him.

Book Syd Barrett Pink Floyd

    Book Details:
  • Author : Julian Palacios
  • Publisher : Plexus Publishing

Download or read book Syd Barrett Pink Floyd written by Julian Palacios and published by Plexus Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 841 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Syd Barrett was an English composer and purveyor of some of the most intriguing music ever written. Famous before his twentieth birthday, Barrett led the charge of psychedelia onstage at London's famed UFO club. With a Fender Telecaster and a primitive Binson echo unit, Barrett liberated the guitar from being, in critic Simon Reynolds' words, 'a riff machine, and turned it into a texture and timbre generator.' His inspired celestial flights of improvisation, and his more structured and whimsical short songs indicated a mind of unusual inventiveness. Chief in Barrett's mind was a Zen-like insistence on spontaneity; each performance had to be unique, and Barrett strived to push his music farther and farther out into the zone of complete abstraction. This in-depth analysis of Pink Floyd founding member Syd Barrett's life and work is the product of years of extensive research. Lost in the Woods traces Syd's swift evolution from precocious young art student to acid-fuelled psychedelic rock star, and examines the myriad musical and literary influences that he utilised in composing his hypnotic, groundbreaking songs. A never-forgotten casualty of the excesses, innovations, and idealism of the 1960s, Syd Barrett is one of the most heavily mythologized men in rock, and Lost in the Woods offers a rare portrayal of a unique spirit in freefall.

The Porch Community is located in the City of Nashville-Davidson County, comprising a cross-section of writers. These writers share a mutual interest in becoming more effective writers. The Porch was cofounded by two accomplished writers, Susannah Felts and Katie McDougall. I composed a sermon as a tribute to how they impacted me through my association as a member of the Porch. This book is to let the larger community know that as member of the Porch, my interest involves writing nonfiction like personal essays, poetry, and sermons. This is different. It expresses my Christian faith, relationship with family and friends, and interest in falling in love with an intelligent and attractive woman.

Book Brothers in Grief

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nora Gross
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2024-10-14
  • ISBN : 0226836207
  • Pages : 243 pages

Download or read book Brothers in Grief written by Nora Gross and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2024-10-14 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A heartbreaking account of grief, Black boyhood, and how we can support young people as they navigate loss. JahSun, a dependable, much-loved senior at Boys’ Prep was just hitting his stride in the fall of 2017. He had finally earned a starting position on the varsity football team and was already weighing two college acceptances. Then, over Thanksgiving, tragedy struck. An altercation at his older sister’s home escalated into violence, killing the unarmed teenager in a hail of bullets. JahSun’s untimely death overwhelmed his entire community, sending his family, friends, and school into seemingly insurmountable grief. Worse yet, that spring two additional Boys’ Prep students would be shot to death in their neighborhood. JahSun and his peers are not alone in suffering the toll of gun violence, as every year in the United States teenagers die by gunfire in epidemic numbers, with Black boys most deeply affected. Brothers in Grief closely attends to the neglected victims of youth gun violence: the suffering friends and classmates who must cope, mostly out of public view, with lasting grief and hidden anguish. Set at an ambitious urban high school for boys during the heartbreaking year following the death of JahSun, the book chronicles the consequences of untimely death on Black teen boys and on a school community struggling to recover. Sociologist Nora Gross tells the story of students attempting to grapple with unthinkable loss, inviting readers in to observe how they move through their days at school and on social media in the aftermath of their friends’ and classmates’ deaths. Gross highlights the discrepancy between their school’s educational mission and teachers’ and administrators’ fraught attempts to care for students’ emotional wellbeing. In the end, the school did not provide adequate space for grief, making it more difficult for students to heal, reengage with school, and imagine hopeful futures. Even so, supportive relationships deepened among students and formed across generations, offering promising examples of productive efforts to channel student grief into positive community change. A searing testimony of our collective failure to understand the inner lives of our children in crisis, Brothers in Grief invites us all to wrestle with the hidden costs of gun violence on racial and educational inequity.
