Book Reporting on Forests and Sustainable Forest Management in the Caucasus and Central Asia

Download or read book Reporting on Forests and Sustainable Forest Management in the Caucasus and Central Asia written by United Nations Publications and published by . This book was released on 2023-06-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reporting on Forests and Sustainable Forest Management in the Caucasus and Central Asia provides an overview of status and developments in reporting on forests and sustainable forest management in five countries of the Caucasus and Central Asia (Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan). This reporting involves looking at forests in the context of the United Nations principles of sustainable development, recognizing the multiple roles forests play in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Criteria and indicators are tools used to define, guide, monitor and assess progress towards sustainable forest management that help our understanding and inform discussions about sustainable forest management. They operate at the global, regional, international, national, subnational, and even at forest management unit levels; and are a basis for informed decision making, establishing national forest policy and facilitating international reporting. A flexible framework of criteria and indicators helps to develop systems adjusted to the capacities, needs, and conditions in which they are applied. This publication provides information about the processes and results of national efforts in building criteria and indicator sets for countries of the region.

Book Assessing the International Forest Regime

Download or read book Assessing the International Forest Regime written by Richard Tarasofsky and published by IUCN. This book was released on 1999 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides an assessment of the international forest regime, in reponse to calls from many quarters, including the UN Intergovernmental Forum on Forests (IFF) and the World Commission on Forests and Sustainable Development, as well as several NGOs. The focus is mainly on action taken by countries at the global level, in the framework of legally binding instruments and institutions. It builds on previous analyses of the international forest regime by looking beyond the legal mandates to begin exploring the actual performance of the components against their mandates. With the Intergovernmental Panel on Forests (IPF) Proposals for Action as the point for departure, the effectiveness and impact of individual legal instruments and global instutions are analyzed, as is the potential for synergy between them.

Book Politics and Economics of Tropical High Forest Management

Download or read book Politics and Economics of Tropical High Forest Management written by Thorsten Treue and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a case study into the complexity of tropical high forest in Ghana. It documents the fact that national forest inventories for a long time yielded results that were either over-optimistic about the annual allowable cut or of little use at policy level. Yet, the most important reasons for deforestation and forest degradation stem from market and legislative failures. This has resulted in major government and export revenues foregone, and the capacity of the timber industry has become far higher than the annual allowable cut from forest reserves. Trees outside forest reserves could fill the gap between the timber demand and the capacity of forest reserves. However, sustainable management of trees outside forest reserves requires clear incentives for the actual managers to do so. These managers are the rural people, who also own the land on which the trees grow. Yet, the state owns the trees. Accordingly, the challenge is for the state to replace its old exploitative attitude with a viable production-oriented approach to off-reserve timber resources.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Expert Panel was appointed by the government following the announcement of the new forest management agreements (FMAs) in northern Alberta. A series of public meetings and workshops were held in northern Alberta, after which the Panel reviewed the issues arising, as well as reviewing any other forest land management issue in Alberta but not the environmental impacts of the proposed pulp mill facilities. The report covers recently announced forestry developments in northern Alberta, with existing FMA and quota operations considered in the more general forest management evaluations. The role of the government in allocating, planning, and regulating FMAs, the role of FMA holders in management, planning, and operations, and the role of the public in this process are all outlined and discussed, as well as technical aspects of forest management, environmental impact, wildlife management, and reforestation.

Book Forestry sector review Pakistan 2019

Download or read book Forestry sector review Pakistan 2019 written by The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-03-01 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Realizing the importance of the forestry sector’s contribution to climate change mitigation and consequently to the improvement of local livelihoods, the World Bank and FAO-Pakistan launched the Forestry Sector Review in 2017. The objective of the Review is to provide a better understanding of current and potential environmental, social, and economic impacts of the forestry ecosystem in the country. Pakistan is a federation of four provinces; Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Punjab and Sindh. The country has three special areas i.e. Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA)1, Gilgit Baltistan (GB) and Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT). Pakistan is a forest poor country with a small area of 4.478 million ha (5.1 percent) under forests. This amounts to 0.021 ha per person, compared to the world average of 1 ha/person. The contribution of the forestry sector to the GNP and GDP as per official estimates seems quite insignificant, primarily due to the fact that a multitude of non-timber forest products (NTFP) and non-tangible environmental and ecological benefits of the forests are not taken into account. This review provides estimates of the total extent of forestry resources and identifies opportunities and hotspots while providing key recommendations for realizing a future sustainable forest system in Pakistan. Appropriate mechanisms and a well-defined strategy are required to address the numerous issues involved in sustainable forest management. The Review also highlights the involvement and contributions of local communities as an essential element for natural resource management and biodiversity conservation.

Book Policies for Sustainable Forestry in Belarus Russia and Ukraine

Download or read book Policies for Sustainable Forestry in Belarus Russia and Ukraine written by Max Krott and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2000 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Policies for Sustainable Forestry in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine" provides a thorough analysis of the key factors in the transition process affecting the forest sector in the eponymous countries. Moreover, it designs new strategies for sustainable development in these areas. The book attempts to strengthen selected trends in the forest sector in each country so that they may gradually achieve sustainability and create a market economy. The key factors are identified by making use of several different sources: scientific papers, interviews with experts from the three countries and the personal experiences of the co-authors living in the countries. The strategies propose new and interesting options for improving forest management by optimizing forestry within closed production units. Further strategies deal with reorientation of forest planning, transition oriented labor management and acquisition of resources for forestry from state and markets. "Policies for Sustainable Forestry in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine" also gives new insights into the political factors and informal strategies within the forestry sector. It serves as an important addition to existing economic market models and will draw attention to the political process driving the transition. This information is helpful to both experts in economics as well as foresters in the field as it gives them an understanding of the complexity of building up a market economy by transition.
