Book Developing the Electronics Industry

Download or read book Developing the Electronics Industry written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1993 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vital electronics industry can boost a country's economic growth, provide jobs for skilled workers, and speed development in other sectors. This report shows how to build a modern and competitive electronics industry. It gives step-by-step advice on the market conditions, enterprise strategies, and government policies that can create a successful electronics sector. The editors suggest guidelines to help countries identify competitive segments of industry. They explain why prospects lie in products for industry, computers, and telecommunications. Their advice points out which products countries should focus on initially. It recommends ways to expand, once basic production and skills are established. The role government must play in developing the physical infrastructure and a skilled work force is examined and major trends in the global electronics industry are reviewed in detail. The collection focuses on semiconductors, computers, consumer electronics, and telecommunications. It examines how electronics developed in advanced industrial economies while electronics industries in selected developing economies and newly industrialized economies are also evaluated. The report explores the roles played by foreign investment and technological development. It describes key government interventions that prepared private enterprises--and labor markets--for market competition. The book points out government interventions and industry practices that hampered efficiency and growth and gives practical advice on improving public policies and boosting industry performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through automation and miniaturisation, microelectronics has vast potential for thrusting society into a new phase. It promises to revolutionise the information handling aspects of our lives. But to gain maximum benefit from this breakthrough, microelectronics must be harnessed to society's needs. To help this process a multidisciplinary group of authors has prepared a report to the Club of Rome on the likely impact of microelectronics on our futures

Book Computers and Informatics in Developing Countries

Download or read book Computers and Informatics in Developing Countries written by Mohan Munasinghe and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2014-05-20 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers and Informatics in Developing Countries is a collection of papers documenting the conference of the Expert Group on Computers and Informatics for Development which investigates how the international scientific and development community can assist developing countries in using computer and informatics technology to promote progress and growth. The papers address the need for developing countries to formulate and apply computer and informatics policies for development, as well as the role of an International Centre for Computers and Informatics (ICCI) should play in the development process. The ICCI should be based on the network principle that links other regional and national computer centers. The advantages of the network principle are lower startup costs, avoidance of setting up a large organization, and localized services of needs. An international organization similar to ICCI can accelerate Third World developmental efforts following the identification of needs of developing countries as regards computer and informatics, setting of clear objectives of ICCI, and meeting with potential donors. The collection is suitable for heads of both non-government agencies and government departments involved in international aid, education, or development, and also to administrators of educational institutions and philanthropic organizations.

Book The Role of the Electronics Industry in Economic Development

Download or read book The Role of the Electronics Industry in Economic Development written by Bhausaheb Ubale and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is concerned with the examination of the role of the electronics industry in the development of developing countries. The electronics, which is a backbone of modern industrial activities, has stimulated growth in developed countries. The main aim of this study, therefore, is to test whether the consumption and production of electronics could stimulate similar growth in developing countries. With this object in view we have focused our attention upon answering two basic questions: viz., 1) What impact do electronics have on the development of the developing countries? 2) If the electronics industry were found to be vital to developing countries, do the developing countries possess the necessary resources to undertake production of electronics technology and products? The answers to these questions are presented in two parts. In Part 1, we have attempted to answer the first question using analytical techniques. We have observed that consumption and production of electronics will create technological transformation in the economy and thereby accelerate the speed of development. We have also analysed the technological characteristics of electronics and found that the continuous chain of innovations produced by the electronics industry has created significant impact on the growth of the economy via both investment and technological multiplier effects. In the light of this discussion, some general hypotheses were suggested to the effect, that the growth of the electronics industry has a significant contribution to the growth of the economy. Part II deals with providing answers to the second question which takes the form of an empirical examination of industry's structure, vertically as well as horizontally. The former deals with the economics and production aspects of the electronic products and technology at the national level, and the latter with the production at the global level. As a case study, we studied the U.K. electronics industry for an in-depth investigation into its vertical structure. For a global examination, we analysed the following aspects, such as : growth trends in selected countries, both developed and developing; the role of multinational companies in international production; their impact on the economy of a developing country; and the trends in the international consumption of electronics. On the basis of this analysis, we assessed the potentialities of the electronics industry for developing countries and found that because of the dominating position held by multinational companies in technology, production and marketing of electronic products, the prospects for developing countries to promote the growth of their own industry are extremely limited. We have, therefore, suggested a co-operative strategy on the part of the developed and developing countries to organise the production of electronics at the international level. This research has been conducted in the face of severe limitation of data and information with respect to the electronics industry. There has been a relative absence of any academic research in this industry, particularly in relation to the problems and aspirations of the developing countries to promote the growth of such industry. This industry, as we see in this thesis, is organised and operated at an international level and, consequently, any analysis of its structure assumes an international dimension. Hence, we found that a detailed and systematic examination of the electronics industry at the international level was very essential, in order to explore its potentialities for any developing country. To that end, this thesis has made, we hope, some significant contribution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic and social progress requires a diverse ecosystem of firms that play complementary roles. Making It Big: Why Developing Countries Need More Large Firms constitutes one of the most up-to-date assessments of how large firms are created in low- and middle-income countries and their role in development. It argues that large firms advance a range of development objectives in ways that other firms do not: large firms are more likely to innovate, export, and offer training and are more likely to adopt international standards of quality, among other contributions. Their particularities are closely associated with productivity advantages and translate into improved outcomes not only for their owners but also for their workers and for smaller enterprises in their value chains. The challenge for economic development, however, is that production does not reach economic scale in low- and middle-income countries. Why are large firms scarcer in developing countries? Drawing on a rare set of data from public and private sources, as well as proprietary data from the International Finance Corporation and case studies, this book shows that large firms are often born large—or with the attributes of largeness. In other words, what is distinct about them is often in place from day one of their operations. To fill the “missing top†? of the firm-size distribution with additional large firms, governments should support the creation of such firms by opening markets to greater competition. In low-income countries, this objective can be achieved through simple policy reorientation, such as breaking oligopolies, removing unnecessary restrictions to international trade and investment, and establishing strong rules to prevent the abuse of market power. Governments should also strive to ensure that private actors have the skills, technology, intelligence, infrastructure, and finance they need to create large ventures. Additionally, they should actively work to spread the benefits from production at scale across the largest possible number of market participants. This book seeks to bring frontier thinking and evidence on the role and origins of large firms to a wide range of readers, including academics, development practitioners and policy makers.
