Book Overview of the Alcator C Mod Program

Download or read book Overview of the Alcator C Mod Program written by Martin Greenwald and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (cont.) Gyro-kinetic simulations suggest that the control mechanism is due to the temperature dependence of trapped electron modes (TEM) which are destabilized by the large density gradients. A set of non-axisymmetric coils was installed allowing intrinsic error fields to be measured and compensated. These also enabled the determination of the mode locking threshold and, by comparison with data from other machines, provided the first direct measurement of size scaling for the threshold. The installation of a new inboard limiter resulted in the reduction of halo currents following disruptions. This effect can be understood in terms of the change in plasma contact with the altered geometry during vertical displacement of the plasma column. Unstable Alfven eigenmodes (AE) were observed in low-density high-power ICRF heated plasmas. The damping rate of stable AEs was investigated with a pair of active MHD antennae.

Book The Alcator C Mod Program

Download or read book The Alcator C Mod Program written by Earl S. Marmar and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcator C-Mod is a high magnetic field tokamak with strong shaping capabilities. While compact in physical dimensions, C-Mod produces plasmas which overlap, in dimensionless parameters and absolute performance, with those produced in much larger devices. Auxiliary heating and current drive systems for C-Mod exclusively employ radio-frequency tools (Ion-Cyclotron and Lower Hybrid), naturally decoupling the heating, fueling and momentum sources. Routine operation at high absolute density, enabled by large B/R, allows C-Mod to explore regimes with fully equilibrated electrons and ions. Compactness also yields very high power densities and particle fluxes, expanding the available parameter space for scrape-off-layer and divertor physics and technology studies. C-Mod has always and exclusively used high Z metallic plasma facing components for all high heat flux regions. C-Mod produces the highest absolute pressure plasmas (at the ITER magnetic field and [beta]), with the current tokamak record for volume average plasma pressure (1.8x10^5 Pa).

Book On the Edge of Magnetic Fusion Devices

Download or read book On the Edge of Magnetic Fusion Devices written by Sergei Krasheninnikov and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-07 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the current state of understanding concerning edge plasma, which bridges hot fusion plasma, with a temperature of roughly one million degrees Kelvin with plasma-facing materials, which have melting points of only a few thousand degrees Kelvin. In a fact, edge plasma is one of the keys to solution for harnessing fusion energy in magnetic fusion devices. The physics governing the processes at work in the edge plasma involves classical and anomalous transport of multispecies plasma, neutral gas dynamics, atomic physics effects, radiation transport, plasma-material interactions, and even the transport of plasma species within the plasma-facing materials. The book starts with simple physical models, then moves on to rigorous theoretical considerations and state-of-the-art simulation tools that are capable of capturing the most important features of the edge plasma phenomena. The authors compare the conclusions arising from the theoretical and computational analysis with the available experimental data. They also discuss the remaining gaps in their models and make projections for phenomena related to edge plasma in magnetic fusion reactors.

Book Alcator C Mod Design and Engineering

Book excerpt: Alcator C-Mod is the high field, high density, divertor tokamak in the world fusion program. We describe in this paper some of the innovative engineering solutions required to produce a diverted tokamak capable of operation at the 8 T, 2 MA level. Some design details of the TF magnet, the OH coax, and power and cooling systems are discussed, as well as the instrumentation required to verify proper operation of these components. Vacuum, vessel bake, boronization, and wall cleaning systems are also discussed.

Book Interim Report of the Committee on a Strategic Plan for U S Burning Plasma Research

Download or read book Interim Report of the Committee on a Strategic Plan for U S Burning Plasma Research written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 2003, President George W. Bush announced that the United States would begin negotiations to join the ITER project and noted that "if successful, ITER would create the first fusion device capable of producing thermal energy comparable to the output of a power plant, making commercially viable fusion power available as soon as 2050." The United States and the other ITER members are now constructing ITER with the aim to demonstrate that magnetically confined plasmas can produce more fusion power than the power needed to sustain the plasma. This is a critical step towards producing and delivering electricity from fusion energy. Since the international establishment of the ITER project, ITER's construction schedule has slipped and ITER's costs have increased significantly, leading to questions about whether the United States should continue its commitment to participate in ITER. This study will advise how to best advance the fusion energy sciences in the United States given developments in the field, the specific international investments in fusion science and technology, and the priorities for the next ten years developed by the community and the Office of Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) that were recently reported to Congress. It will address the scientific justification and needs for strengthening the foundations for realizing fusion energy given a potential choice of U.S. participation or not in the ITER project, and develops future scenarios in either case. This interim report assesses the current status of U.S. fusion research and of the importance of burning plasma research to the development of fusion energy as well as to plasma science and other science and engineering disciplines. The final report will present strategies that incorporate continued progress toward a burning plasma experiment and a focus on innovation.

Book Final Report of the Committee on a Strategic Plan for U S Burning Plasma Research

Download or read book Final Report of the Committee on a Strategic Plan for U S Burning Plasma Research written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fusion offers the prospect of virtually unlimited energy. The United States and many nations around the world have made enormous progress toward achieving fusion energy. With ITER scheduled to go online within a decade and demonstrate controlled fusion ten years later, now is the right time for the United States to develop plans to benefit from its investment in burning plasma research and take steps to develop fusion electricity for the nation's future energy needs. At the request of the Department of Energy, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine organized a committee to develop a strategic plan for U.S. fusion research. The final report's two main recommendations are: (1) The United States should remain an ITER partner as the most cost-effective way to gain experience with a burning plasma at the scale of a power plant. (2) The United States should start a national program of accompanying research and technology leading to the construction of a compact pilot plant that produces electricity from fusion at the lowest possible capital cost.
