Close Calls.escaping by the skin of my."Before we even knew what he hit, Arab men appeared from every nook and cranny. Like flies around a ripe, red watermelon, they swarmed around our car, peering at us from behind black beards and mustaches. Our hearts sank." Lodges.the good, the bad, and the ugly."We had certainly come a long way from the flush toilets.Chobi's toilet amounted to a chair that resembled a lawn chair, with a toilet seat on it-over a 'long-drop loo'.Actually, the chair was over a hole in the ground-and this 'long-drop loo' had a very short drop." Sometimes she's slightly out of focus. Oh Those Men. "The zipper down the front of my dress had more than one convenience. Pepe began demonstrating some of the matador's passes. When he wasn't looking, I slid the zipper down a little, so I could get a whiff of the oilcloth fumes (from my vinyl dress), as I slouched in my seat. I could nestle my nose inside the v-neck for a scent that was as welcome as a bouquet of flowers by now."

Book Some of the Dead Are Still Breathing

Download or read book Some of the Dead Are Still Breathing written by Charles Bowden and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third book in Charles Bowden’s “accidental trilogy” that began with Blood Orchid and Blues for Cannibals, Some of the Dead Are Still Breathing attempts to resolve the overarching question: “How can a person live a moral life in a culture of death?” As humanity moves further into the twenty-first century, Bowden continues to interrogate our roles in creating the ravaged landscapes and accumulated death that still surround us, as well as his own childhood isolation, his lust for alcohol and women, and his waning hope for a future. We witness post-Katrina New Orleans and terrorist-bombed Bali; we encounter our shared actions with the animal world and the desirous need for consumption; we see the clash and erosion of our physical and figurative borders, the savagery of our own civilization. A man of his time and out of time, Bowden seeks acceptance and a will to endure what may lie ahead.

Download or read book Forget Photography written by Andrew Dewdney and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why we must forget photography and reject the frame of reality it prescribes and delineates. The central paradox this book explores is that at the moment of photography's replacement by the algorithm and data flow, photographic cultures proliferate as never before. The afterlife of photography, residual as it may technically be, maintains a powerful cultural and representational hold on reality, which is important to understand in relationship to the new conditions. Forgetting photography is a strategy to reveal the redundant historicity of the photographic constellation and the cultural immobility of its epicenter. It attempts to liberate the image from these historic shackles, forged by art history and photographic theory. More important, perhaps, forgetting photography also entails rejecting the frame of reality it prescribes and delineates, and in doing so opens up other relationships between bodies, times, events, materials, memory, representation and the image. Forgetting photography attempts to develop a systematic method for revealing the limits and prescriptions of thinking with photography, which no amount of revisionism of post-photographic theory can get beyond. The world urgently needs to unthink photography and go beyond it in order to understand the present constitution of the image as well as the reality or world it shows. Forgetting photography will require a different way of organizing knowledge about the visual in culture that involves crossing different knowledges of visual culture, technologies, and mediums. It will also involve thinking differently about routine and creative labor and its knowledge practices within the institutions and organization of visual reproduction.

Book Good Pictures

  • Author : Kim Beil
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press
  • Release : 2020-06-23
  • ISBN : 1503612325
  • Pages : 333 pages

Download or read book Good Pictures written by Kim Beil and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A picture-rich field guide to American photography, from daguerreotype to digital. We are all photographers now, with camera phones in hand and social media accounts at the ready. And we know which pictures we like. But what makes a "good picture"? And how could anyone think those old styles were actually good? Soft-focus yearbook photos from the '80s are now hopelessly—and happily—outdated, as are the low-angle portraits fashionable in the 1940s or the blank stares of the 1840s. From portraits to products, landscapes to food pics, Good Pictures proves that the history of photography is a history of changing styles. In a series of short, engaging essays, Kim Beil uncovers the origins of fifty photographic trends and investigates their original appeal, their decline, and sometimes their reuse by later generations of photographers. Drawing on a wealth of visual material, from vintage how-to manuals to magazine articles for working photographers, this full-color book illustrates the evolution of trends with hundreds of pictures made by amateurs, artists, and commercial photographers alike. Whether for selfies or sepia tones, the rules for good pictures are always shifting, reflecting new ways of thinking about ourselves and our place in the visual world.
