Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Great War, composers and performers created music that expressed common sentiments like patriotism, grief, and anxiety. Yet music also revealed the complexities of the partnership between France, Great Britain, Canada, and the United States. At times, music reaffirmed a commitment to the shared wartime mission. At other times, it reflected conflicting views about the war from one nation to another or within a single nation.Over Here, Over There examines how composition, performance, publication, recording, censorship, and policy shaped the Atlantic allies' musical response to the war. The first section of the collection offers studies of individuals. The second concentrates on communities, whether local, transnational, or on the spectrum in-between. Essay topics range from the sinking of the Lusitania through transformations of the entertainment industry to the influenza pandemic.Contributors: Christina Bashford, William Brooks, Deniz Ertan, Barbara L. Kelly, Kendra Preston Leonard, Gayle Magee, Jeffrey Magee, Michelle Meinhart, Brian C. Thompson, and Patrick Warfield

A husband, father and lover of a woman with whom he'd shared an obsessive love since before his marriage to another. And now he's dead, shot in the back at his sumptuous Long Island summer home. When the story opens we see Clive's ghost who has realized that he must work through Bob Greene, the white detective assigned to his case in order to discover his murderer. Clive is trapped in a world between heaven and hell and his only hope for peace is to find out who killed him. Bit by bit, through dreams and by taking over Bob's consciousness, he reveals his life leading up to the murder in the hope that if Bob knows what really happened, he can find Clive's murderer before it's too late. A DEAD MAN SPEAKS is the story of two men who need each other to complete their lives -- one living the other dead --- one to move forward in this life and the other to move forward in the next. It's about two men with two very different lives who are bound together by one murder that neither can escape. Clive January, a black man and brash Wall Street entrepreneur who is hated by many and understood by few and Bob Greene the white detective living in the shadow of a failed career and determined to prove that he's still got it. Bob Greene is psychic and with his gift of clairvoyance, he re-lives the bitter pieces of Clive's life, Clive January the poor boy from the South, who hated himself, never knowing why until it was too late. Clive, the husband and successful Wall street banker whose life had spiraled out of control. Told primarily through Clive's voice and then Detective Bob's, a complex story is layered from their two perspectives, until the truth is revealed in a wrenching ending that neither ever suspected.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Oatmeal and the Catechism is the story of emigrants from the Outer Hebrides to Quebec in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Most were crofting families from Lewis who had suffered the severe effects of the potato famine of 1846-51. As a solution to the increasing pressure on landlords and government relief bodies, they were offered free passage to 'Lower Canada' and given land grants in the Eastern Townships. To this day place-names such as Stornoway, Tolsta, Ness and Dell in Canada testify to the strong links these communities kept with their homeland." "In this updated edition of her book Margaret Bennett traces the historical background of emigration and settlement in this part of Canada. By means of recorded interviews with descendants of the original settlers, she builds up a detailed picture not only of the social and religious aspects of their lives, but also of how they set about building a new community in the wilderness. For more than a century people in the Outer Hebrides have been asking what happened to those who left for the New World. Oatmeal and the Catechism answers that question."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

A university lecturer and seasoned international traveler, Petworth is nevertheless unprepared for the oddities of culture and circumstance that await him on the other side of the iron curtain. Book excerpt: Whites Only by Artis Holder is a debut novel about the struggles of an elderly black couple who were forced into modern day slavery after being wrongfully accused of stealing a dime. The assigned living quarters was a small wooden shack behind the bowling alley. The novel also tells the story of the black pin boys during the early 60's and how they were physically and mentally abused by their Jim Crow South employers as well as the patrons. The novel describes actual events of the Civil Rights Era, including the non-stop attempts by the Freedom Riders to invade the privacy of the southern establishment. Attempts that were often met with violence which resulted in serious bodily injury and jail time. Even after passing the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the southern establishment used local law enforcement to discourage and defeat the efforts of the Freedom Riders. Until finally, the playing field changed. But not without a good old southern fight. As for the elderly black couple, they had always lived in fear since the horrible rape in the cold winter of 1930 that resulted in the birth of a child that the mother would never hold in her arms. Would she ever see the child again or would the infant be among the buried bodies behind that old wooden shed where the abolishment of slavery was only a dream. Who knows? Perhaps Whites Only.
