Book excerpt: Excerpt from Over the Plains, on the Mountains, or Kansas, Colorado and the Rocky Mountains: Agriculturally, Mineralogically and Aesthetically Described This volume contains the result of personal observations made in Kansas and Colorado in the Summer of 1871. By a resolution adopted by the Missouri State Board of Agriculture, it was determined in a body and in their official capacity, to take an excursion through Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, and if found practicable, to Utah. The object was to gain information by personal observation, of the natural resources and agricultural capabilities of the great Plains and of the mountain territories, to ascertain the state of the branches of industry to which they were adapted, the character of the soil and climate, the mode of culture, and the probable extent to which they would be dependent upon other sections for supplies especially agricultural products. An invitation was extended to the Kansas State Agricultural Society, to join us in the excursion, which was cordially accepted. To the liberality of the North Missouri, the Kansas Pacific, the Colorado Central, the Denver Pacific and the Boulder Valley railroads we are indebted for free passes in going and returning over their roads; and for which they will please accept the most grateful and cordial thanks of the whole party. During the excursion, I took full notes of everything that fell under my observation, and also of facts elicited from conversations with those familiar with the Mountains; not with the remotest intention however, of perpetrating the infliction of a book upon the patient public, but for my own gratification and satisfaction. After my return home, I wrote out a few pages of the notes for the Sunday number of one of our leading dailies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Plains Horticulture explores the significant, civilizing role that horticulture has played in the development of farmsteads and rural and urban communities on the High Plains portions of Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming, drawing on both the science and the application of science practiced since 1840. Freeman explores early efforts to supplement native and imported foodstuffs, state and local encouragement to plant trees, the practice of horticulture at the Union Colony of Greeley, the pioneering activities of economic botanists Charles Bessey (in Nebraska) and Aven Nelson (in Wyoming), and the shift from food production to community beautification as the High Plains were permanently settled and became more urbanized. In approaching the history of horticulture from the perspective of local and unofficial history, Freeman pays tribute to the tempered idealism, learned pragmatism, and perseverance of individuals from all walks of life seeking to create livable places out of the vast, seemingly inhospitable High Plains. He also suggests that, slowly but surely, those that inhabit them have been learning to adjust to the limits of that fragile land. High Plains Horticulture will appeal to not only scientists and professionals but also gardening enthusiasts interested in the history of their hobby on the High Plains.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Wide Rivers Crossed, Ellen Wohl tells the stories of two rivers—the South Platte on the western plains and the Illinois on the eastern—to represent the environmental history and historical transformation of major rivers across the American prairie. Wohl begins with the rivers’ natural histories, including their geologic history, physical characteristics, ecological communities, and earliest human impacts, and follows a downstream and historical progression from the use of the rivers’ resources by European immigrants through increasing population density of the twentieth century to the present day. The environmental changes in the South Platte and the Illinois reflect the relentless efforts by humans to control the distribution of water: to enhance surface water in the arid western prairie and to limit the spread of floods and drain the wetlands along the rivers in the water-abundant east. In addition, during the past two centuries crops replaced native vegetation; excess snowmelt and rainfall carried fertilizers and pesticides into streams; and levees, dams, and drainage altered distribution. These changes cascaded through networks, starting in small headwater tributaries, and reduced the ability of rivers to supply the clean water, fertile soil, and natural habitats they had provided for centuries. Understanding how these rivers, and rivers in general, function and how these functions have been altered over time will allow us to find innovative approaches to restoring river ecosystems. Wide Rivers Crossed looks at these historical changes and discusses opportunities for much needed protection and restoration for the future."

Download or read book Ores to Metals written by James Fell and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2011-05-18 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive treatment of the smelting industry of Colorado, originally published in 1979, is now back in print with a new preface by the author. Packed with fascinating statistics and mining data, Ores to Metals details the people, technologies, and business decisions that have shaped the smelting industry in the Rockies. Although mining holds more of the glamour for those in and interested in the minerals industry, smelters have continuously played a critical role in the industry's evolution since their introduction in Colorado in the 1860s. At that time, miners desperately needed new technology to recover gold and silver from ores resistant to milling. Beginning as small independent enterprises, progressing to larger integrated firms working in urban centers, and finally following a trend toward mergers, the entire industry was absorbed into one large holding company - the American Smelting and Refining Company. Over time, fortunes were won and lost, business success was converted to political success, and advances were made in science and metallurgy. Drawing on archival material, Fell expertly presents the triumphs and troubles of the entrepreneurs who built one of the great industries of the West.
