Book excerpt: MICHAEL COADY'S "One Another is a welcome and worthy successor to his much-loved "All Souls. Poetry, prose, and illustration are integrated in a cumulative work of gravity and compassion. The title poem is prelude to a set of variations on motifs of community, mortality and memory, emerging from an intimately known anchorage of place. The writer's voice is joined by a chorale of "overheard" communal tones, in oral mode and various moods. The book's inclusive reach finds room for play, as in 'Textament, ' or its guest versions of 'The Gift of Tongues.' A personal crisis deepens perspective and heralds renewal in 'The Place of Hurt and Healing.' The human interplay of unsung lives and destinies suffuses "One Another "in the carnal war / with time that's always lost / but never conceded."

Book Writing Modern Ireland

Download or read book Writing Modern Ireland written by Catherine E. Paul and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Writing Modern Ireland' examines the complex literary manifestations of Ireland and Irishness from the turn of the twentieth century to very recently. Together with examinations of the nation, the collected essays consider Irish identities that may be sexual, racial, regional, gendered, disabled and able-bodied, traumatized and in the process of healing. Identity, like literary texts, is a constant process of making and remaking, revision and publication. This collection takes up the question of what it means to write modern Ireland, evoking the many resonances that name will carry: a mythic place, a land controlled from elsewhere, a nation hoped for and achieved, a nation denied and resisted, an island divided, an idea soaked in fantasies and dreams, a homeland abandoned in searches for brighter futures, a land of opportunity, a people who are many people, and a place defined by writers who both empower and challenge it. W. B. Yeats looms large, as he does in modern Irish writing, and in commemoration of his sesquicentennial year. Building on a themed issue of The South Carolina Review, the present volume is expanded and rededicated by Catherine E. Paul (Clemson University). It features critical essays by Ronald Schuchard on Yeats, Michael Sidnell on Beckett, Liam Harte on Sebastian Barry, Jefferson Holdridge on contemporary Irish poets, and Thomas Dillon Redshaw on the revival of the Cuala Press (illustrated), together with a host of significant scholarship and criticism by 14 additional international experts from the USA, UK, Belgium, France, and (of course) Ireland."-- p. [4] of cover.

Book The Essential Library for Irish Americans

Download or read book The Essential Library for Irish Americans written by Morgan Llywelyn and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ireland is in the news and a center of international attention in this decade. This book is an instructive, opinionated, annotated list of books that anyone in America who is Irish or interested in the Irish ought to read. Morgan Llywelyn has chosen these books for their accuracy and their pleasures, and describes them in clear, concise language that is in itself a pleasure. It does not summarize the contents but rather tells you what experiences are in store for ther reader of each individual book listed. The books are listed in broad categories, such as biography and autobiography, history, poetry, fiction, and many more. This guide will be a useful companion to travellers to Ireland, will give insight into the Irish heritage of Irish Americans, will be a guide to further reading, and perhaps even to building family libraries in the home. Morgan Llywelyn, the author of fine novels of the past of Ireland, such as Lion of Ireland, and the present, such as 1916, has both the knowledge and the credibility to present this book to the reading public. Book Open Secrets

Download or read book Open Secrets written by Richard Lischer and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2002-07-16 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Open Secrets is Richard Lischer's story of his early career as a Lutheran minister. Fresh out of divinity school and full of enthusiasm, Lischer found himself assigned to a small conservative church in an economically depressed town in southern Illinois. This was far from what this overly enthusiastic and optimistic young man expected. The town was bleak, poor, and clearly not a step on his path to a brilliant career. It's an awkward marriage at best, a young man with a Ph.D. in theology, full of ideas and ambitions, determined to improve his parish and bring them into the twenty-first century, and a community that is "as tightly sealed as a jar of home-canned pickles." In their own way, they welcome him and his family, even though they think he's "got bigger fish to fry." Thus begins Richard Lischer's first year as a pastor: bringing communion to the sick (but forgetting to bring the wafers); marrying two unlikely couples--a pregnant teenager and her boyfriend, and two people who can't stop fighting. Often he doesn't understand his congregation, and sometimes they don't understand him; for instance, why does his wife hire a baby-sitter and instead of leaving, put on her bathing suit, grab a stack of novels, and hide from the kids? Or why can't Pastor Lischer see how important it is for a woman with little money to buy an elaborate coffin to bury her husband in? There are also the moments of grace, when pastor and parishioner unite for a common goal: when he asks for prayers for his infant son, and can feel everyone in the congregation ministering to him; when old hurts are put aside to help a desperate young woman finish college and raise her baby; or when he helps save a woman from dying of a drug overdose. In Open Secrets Lischer tells not only his own story but also the story of New Cana and all of its inhabitants--lovable, deeply flawed, imperfect people that stick together. With his sharp eye and keen wit, Lischer perfectly captures the comedy of small town life with all of its feuds, rumors, scandals, and friendships. In the end he learns to appreciate not only the life New Cana has to offer, but also the people who have accepted him, at last, as part of themselves.
