Book excerpt: The Millennial generation is America's largest, shadowing the current size of the baby boomer generation. This generation of individuals born between 1980 and 1994 is soon to move into managerial and upper management positions within nonprofit organizations, and thus human resource departments at small and large nonprofits and charities have the responsibility of placing intentional efforts into the recruitment and evaluation of engagement strategies to increase the employment of Millennials and reduce their voluntary turnover. The Millennial generation is reported to be composed of individuals who have limited interest in altruistic careers (Twenge, Campbell, & Freeman, 2012) given their reported egotistical, entitled, self-absorbed, and narcissistic personalities (Hill, 2002; Howe & Strauss, 2009). Furthermore, Millennials are not motivated to work for nonprofit organizations due to job insecurity, inadequate pay, overly defining positions, and limited development opportunities. Therefore, strategizing approaches to motivate Millennials to occupy future C-suite positions that require critical managerial, mission-driven, and administrative responsibilities should become a focus for staff development departments. However, as a consequence of the nature of most nonprofit positions, workers are usually assigned to multi-faceted tasks with little to no assistance or supervision. As turnover increases, responsibilities from one worker are usually delegated to another due to the lack of funding and the organization's upper management and donor base's desire to maintain minimal overhead. Consequently, engaging Millennials in such exceedingly demanding positions will become a challenge for nonprofits, with increasing difficulty in developing them for future upper management positions without the risk of voluntary turnover. Through an extensive literature review, this study identifies how small and large nonprofit organizations outsource certain tasks in order to reduce costs and potential turnover. Therefore, this study's focal point will be to identify whether outsourcing administrative tasks and assigning mission-driven responsibilities to Millennials will reduce voluntary turnover. Furthermore, this study will consider whether Millennials will be willing to perform in onerous positions if job security and proper pay are a guarantee.
