Book Outlines of Zu i Creation Myths

Download or read book Outlines of Zu i Creation Myths written by Frank Hamilton Cushing and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1896 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the earlier years of my life with the Zuñi Indians of western-central New Mexico, from the autumn of 1879 to the winter of 1881-before access to their country had been rendered easy by the completion of the Atlantic and Pacific railroad, -they remained, as regards their social and religious institutions and customs and their modes of thought, if not of daily life, the most archaic of the Pueblo or Aridian peoples. They still continue to be, as they have for centuries been, the most highly developed, yet characteristic and representative of all these people. In fact, it is principally due to this higher development by the Zuñi, than by any of the other Pueblos, of the mytho-sociologic system distinctive in some measure of them all at the time of the Spanish conquest of the southwest, that they have maintained so long and so much more completely than any of the others the primitive characteristics of the Aridian phase of culture; this despite the fact that, being the descendants of the original dwellers in the famous "Seven Cities of Cibola," they were the earliest known of all the tribes within the territory of the United States.

Book Old Testament Theology in Outline

Download or read book Old Testament Theology in Outline written by Walther Zimmerli and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1983-03-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the period that the Old Testament came into being, Israel, from who whose world the documents contained in the Old Testament derive, underwent many changes, especially in its sociological structures. Such changes produce changes in liturgical life, resulting finally in the elimination of a multiplicity of sanctuaries and focusing on Jerusalem.Walther Zimmerli suggests that a presentation of Old Testament theology cannot close its eyes to all this movement and change. This classic study expertly outlines the essential religious structures and tensions of the Old Testament.

Book Tales of the Earth

Download or read book Tales of the Earth written by David Leeming and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2021-09-16 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing analysis of key themes in Native American origin myths—and their stark contrast with the exceptionalist values of the United States. Tales of the Earth is a comprehensive yet concise overview of Native American mythologies. After outlining theories of the origins of Native North Americans, David Leeming considers the creation myths of many tribes, emphasizing four commonly occurring figures: the Great Spirit, the trickster, the goddess, and the hero. Leeming suggests that in addition to these figures, Native American mythologies have in common a deep reverence for the earth and for community responsibility as opposed to individualism—tenets that stand in stark contrast to the concepts of exceptionalism and Manifest Destiny that characterize the United States, a nation that was built on ancient tribal land.

Book Creation Myths of Primitive America

Download or read book Creation Myths of Primitive America written by Jeremiah Curtin and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2014-06-02 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mr. Jeremiah Curtin's book was his first on the unwritten mental productions of primitive America. It contains twenty long myths taken down word for word by him from Indians who knew no religion nor language save their own, and the chief of whom had not seen a white man until years of maturity. These myths are all of remarkable beauty and exceptional value; among the more noteworthy is "Olelbis," containing an account of the creation of the heavenly house in the Central Blue, the highest point in the sky above us. In this mythis described also the great World Fire which was extinguished by a flood; and next a reconstruction of the face of the earth, which gave the form existing at present. In addition to their intrinsic beauty, these masterpieces of the primitive human mind in America antedate by many ages the earliest forms of thought represented to us in the records of Egypt and Assyria, hence their value may be easily inferred; they explain to us things which had become unintelligible to the priests of Egypt and Assyria in the religious systems which they themselves taught and studied. The volume contains an elaborate introduction and all necessary notes

Book The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms Volume 2

Download or read book The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms Volume 2 written by Ernst Cassirer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-24 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms is one of the landmarks of twentieth century philosophy. Drawing from the influential work of Wilhelm Dilthey, it transformed neo-Kantianism into a new robust philosophy of culture. The second volume, on Mythical Thinking, analyzes the fundamental layers of perception and expression as well as the articulations with religion and the dialectic with other forms, essentially language and art. The intellectual breadth of the volume is remarkable. It initiated the debate with Martin Heidegger and prompted a long-lasting meditation by Hans Blumenberg. We are only beginning to recognize its importance for our understanding of the power of images in the construction of aesthetics, the self, and the socio-political world. It initiated a discussion within French sociology (Émile Durkheim, Marcel Mauss) that ultimately resurfaced in Pierre Bourdieu, while today it is considered as a resourceful path for cultural and critical theory (Drucilla Cornell and Kenneth M. Panfilio). Finally, this volume also offers solid grounds for a political critique of Nazism - specifically: Alfred Rosenberg’s Myth of the 20th Century and Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf - as well as the new emerging totalitarian ideologies." Fabien Capeilleres, Professor of Philosophy, editor of the French edition of Cassirer’s Works. This new translation makes Cassirer’s seminal work available to a new generation of scholars. Each volume includes a translator’s introduction by Steve G. Lofts, a foreword by Peter E. Gordon, a glossary of key terms, and an index.
