Book Understanding Old Testament Theology

Download or read book Understanding Old Testament Theology written by Brittany Kim and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2020-12-22 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discipline of Old Testament theology seeks to provide us with a picture of YHWH and his relationship to the world as described in the Old Testament. But within this discipline, there are many disagreements about the key issues and methodologies: Is the Old Testament unified in some way? Should the context of the theologian play a role in interpretation? Should Old Testament theology merely describe what ancient Israel believed, or should it offer guidance for the church today? What is the relationship between history and theology? All these considerations and more result in so many different kinds of Old Testament theologies (and so many publications), that it's difficult for students, pastors, and laity to productively study this already complex field. In Understanding Old Testament Theology, professors Brittany Kim and Charlie Trimm provide an overview of the contemporary approaches to Old Testament theology. In three main sections, they explore various approaches: Part I examines approaches that ground Old Testament theology in history. Part II surveys approaches that foreground Old Testament theme(s). Part III considers approaches that highlight different contexts for doing Old Testament theology. Each main chapter describes both common features of the approach and points of tension and then offers a test case illuminating how it has been applied to the book of Exodus. Through reading this book, you’ll hopefully come to see the Old Testament in a fresh light—as something that’s alive and active, continually drawing us into deeper encounters with the living God.

Book Old Testament Theology in Outline

Download or read book Old Testament Theology in Outline written by Walther Zimmerli and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1983-03-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the period that the Old Testament came into being, Israel, from who whose world the documents contained in the Old Testament derive, underwent many changes, especially in its sociological structures. Such changes produce changes in liturgical life, resulting finally in the elimination of a multiplicity of sanctuaries and focusing on Jerusalem.Walther Zimmerli suggests that a presentation of Old Testament theology cannot close its eyes to all this movement and change. This classic study expertly outlines the essential religious structures and tensions of the Old Testament.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discipline of Old Testament theology continues to be in flux as diverse approaches vie for dominance. Paul House serves as our guide—without being partisan or uninformed—exploring each Old Testament book, summarizing its content and showing its theological significance within the whole of the Old Testament canon. Readers with little prior background will find House’s thematic surveys particularly helpful for coming to grips with basic biblical content as well as for probing the theological nuances of individual parts of the canon. The book concludes by forging a set of summary statements concerning God and his character, the people of God, and links between the Old and New Testaments that suggest avenues for the exploration of a full biblical theology. Old Testament Theology offers an overview of the discipline and a fair treatment of differing views while remaining unabashedly evangelical. Readers will welcome the obvious passion of its author for the subject matter. Student friendly and useful to a wide audience, this impressive work has proved a profitable read for many.

Book An Old Testament Theology

Download or read book An Old Testament Theology written by Bruce K. Waltke and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2011-04-19 with total page 1042 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Testament is more than a religious history of the nation of Israel. It is more than a portrait gallery of heroes of the faith. It is even more than a theological and prophetic backdrop to the New Testament. Beyond these, the Old Testament is inspired revelation of the very nature, character, and works of God. As renowned Old Testament scholar Bruce Waltke writes in the preface of this book, the Old Testament’s every sentence is “fraught with theology, worthy of reflection.” This book is the result of decades of reflection informed by an extensive knowledge of the Hebrew language, the best of critical scholarship, a deep understanding of both the content and spirit of the Old Testament, and a thoroughly evangelical conviction. Taking a narrative, chronological approach to the text, Waltke employs rhetorical criticism to illuminate the theologies of the biblical narrators. Through careful study, he shows that the unifying theme of the Old Testament is the “breaking in of the kingdom of God.” This theme helps the reader better understand not only the Old Testament, but also the New Testament, the continuity of the entire Bible, and ultimately, God himself.

Book The Theology of the Book of Genesis

Download or read book The Theology of the Book of Genesis written by R. W. L. Moberly and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-05-29 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Genesis contains foundational material for Jewish and Christian theology, both historic and contemporary, and is almost certainly the most appealed-to book in the Old Testament in contemporary culture. R. W. L. Moberly's The Theology of the Book of Genesis examines the actual use made of Genesis in current debates, not only in academic but also in popular contexts. Traditional issues such as creation and fall stand alongside more recent issues such as religious violence and Christian Zionism. Moberly's concern - elucidated through a combination of close readings and discussions of hermeneutical principle - is to uncover what constitutes good understanding and use of Genesis, through a consideration of its intrinsic meaning as an ancient text (in both Hebrew and Greek versions) in dialogue with its reception and appropriation both past and present. Moberly seeks to enable responsible theological awareness and use of the ancient text today, highlighting Genesis' enduring significance.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Old Testament Theology The position which is taken in the following chapters with regard to the composition and date of the Old Testament Books, as explained in the Introduction, is that which is generally adopted by Old Testament scholars at home and abroad. Among writers who are members of the Church of England the reader may be referred to Prof. Driver, in his works as cited in this d104-book (cf. especially p. 1); Prof. Sanday, Inspiration, Lectures iii.-v; Prof. Kirkpatrick, The Doctrine of the Prophets; Prof. Ryle, The Early Narratives of Genesis, etc.; Mr. Ottley, Aspects of the Old Testament: among Scottish writers to Prof. A. B. Davidson, the author of commentaries on Job and Ezekiel in the Cambridge Bible for Schools, etc.; and Prof. G. A. Smith, the author of commentaries on Isaiah and the Minor Prophets in The Expositor s Bible, and The Historical Geography of the Holy Land: and generally to the articles on Old Testament subjects in Dr. Hastings' Dictionary of the Bible. Among Roman Catholic churchmen who adopt the same position may be mentioned the Abbe Loisy, in Les Etudes Bibliques, and Baron F. Von Hugel, The Historical Method and the Documents of the Hexateuch, and The Church and the Bible (see Dublin Review, April and October, 1895). Further study of the Theology of the Old Testament may be made with great profit in Dr. Schultz's Old Testament Theology (English trans.1892), and in many of the articles in the new Dictionary of the Bible above mentioned. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fr. Barthelemy was an internationally recognized expert on Old Testament studies, and a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission. In this work he dispenses with the technical language of exegesis and linguistics, and speaks theologically as a priest, a teacher, a believer. This work is an introduction to the spiritual teaching of the Old Testament, and can greatly help believers to hear that renewing and rejuvenating Word of God with deepened understanding. This is a book about God and man. It is also about the long history of God's search for man and the difficulty man had in keeping intact the divine image in which he was created. The purpose of this book is to present what God says about Himself and about His image (man) in the inspired texts of Scripture. This powerful work by an acclaimed Biblical and spiritual writer can enkindle the heart and enlighten the mind of modern man to see who we truly are in God's eyes, and help us to understand the full extent of our deep need for God to become his faithful followers and images once again.
