Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline of Applied Sociology Many, if not most sciences, present two aspects or departments, closely related to each other but distinct from each other. The first department is that which is called the theoretic or pure science. Its function is to study phenomena, ascertain facts, and establish laws and principles. It has no object in view beyond the acquirement of knowledge. The second department is the practical or applied science. This division has much of the nature of an art, its purpose being to take the facts, principles, and laws worked out by pure science, and devise methods of utilizing them to serve some human purpose. It is telic in Professor Ward's phraseology. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Outlines of Sociology Sociology is considered the fundamental social science, for it deals with the same subject-matter that all social sciences deal with, and treats of laws and modes of behavior in group life that are common to all the special social sciences alike. If what is general and common to all is set apart as the sphere of a particular science, then what is peculiar to each differentiated class of phenomena may be properly left to a special science working on the principles of the general science as a basis. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sociology in the United States of America Yet, whatever the future may think of the specific developments of the post-war decade, it seems likely that this period will be regarded as an important turning point in the history of social research in America. Its most Obvious feature was a considerable increase in the amount of research undertaken. Financial support from foundations, government agencies, private organizations and business enter prises underwrote empirical research on a wide variety Of topics. Research as an activity and sociologists with research abilities and skills gained considerable prestige both within the profession and with other disciplines. It is in this decade that empirical social research has achieved the status of a widely recognized and well-supported professional activity. However spectacular it may appear to be, it is not our purpose here to provide a chronicle of the growth of empirical Social research during the post-war period. We shall rather be concerned with reviewing the changes which took place in the structure of research activity - changes in methodology, new technical devices em ployed, and the transformation which took place in the organization of research. Before presenting a more or less systematic review of these developments in American sociological research, it may be worth giving a brief account of what the writer believes to be the most important changes. The reader will find each of these treated in greater detail in the body of this review. An important change in the post-war decade was the increasing use of the personal interview as a basic data collecting device. Attitude and Opinion surveys were made on a wide range of topics, using samples drawn from a variety of populations outside academic walls. Along with the increase in the employment of such surveys has come greater Sophistication in their use and analysis. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In his magisterial Great American City, Robert J. Sampson puts social scientific data behind an argument that we all feel and experience everyday: the neighborhood you live in has a big effect on your life and the city you live in. Not only does your neighborhood determine where your nearest hospital is, what kind of schools your children can attend, or how many police officers you might encounter (and how they respond to you), it affects how you feel, how you think about the world and your place in it. Like many sociologists before him, Sampson looks to Chicago to make his insightful interventions, based on extensive data collected across the city's diverse neighborhoods. This edition includes a new afterword by Sampson reflecting on changes in Chicago and the country that have occurred since the book was initially published. He notes the increase in gun violence, both among civilians and police killings of civilians, as well as steady or growing rates of segregation despite an increase in diversity. With these changes have come new research, much of it a continuation or elaboration of the work in Great American City. He updates readers on the status of the research initiative that serves as the basis of Great American City, the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN), and summarizes how scholars have taken up his work. Many of these scholars have new tools at their disposal with the rise of big data; Sampson remarks on these changes in the field"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American Town: A Sociological Study The study of human motives is, however, by no means a simple matter. The author does not concur in the popular notion that while other sciences may be permitted the use of expressions and methods which bewilder the uninitiated, yet sociology should speak so plainly that a wayfaring man, though a fool, need not err therein. All serious students of sociology have found that, far from being free from the tech nicalities which make other sciences diflicult, sociology is the most complicated of all the sciences. Accordingly, we must refuse at the outset to simplify matters at the expense of truthfulness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
