Book Fundamentals of Engineering Tribology with Applications

Download or read book Fundamentals of Engineering Tribology with Applications written by Harish Hirani and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-11 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tribology is related to friction, wear and lubrication of machine elements. Tribology not only deals with the design of fluid containment systems like seals and gasket but also with the lubrication of surfaces in relative motion. This book comprehensively discusses the theories and applications of hydrodynamic thrust bearing, gas (air) lubricated bearing and elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication. It elucidates the concepts related to friction, including coefficient of friction, friction instability and stick-slip motion. It clarifies the misconception that harder and cleaner surfaces produce better results in wear. Recent developments, including online condition monitoring (an integration of moisture sensor, wear debris and oil quality sensors) and multigrid technique, are discussed in detail. The book also offers design problems and their real-life applications for cams, followers, gears and bearings. MATLAB programs, frequently asked questions and multiple choice questions are interspersed throughout for easy understanding of the topics.

Book Fundamentals of Tree Ring Research

Download or read book Fundamentals of Tree Ring Research written by James H. Speer and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tree-ring dating (dendrochronology) is a method of scientific dating based on the analysis of tree-ring growth patterns. As author James Speer notes, trees are remarkable bioindicators. Although there are other scientific means of dating climatic and environmental events, dendrochronology provides the most reliable of all paleorecords. Dendrochronology can be applied to very old trees to provide long-term records of past temperature, rainfall, fire, insect outbreaks, landslides, hurricanes, and ice storms--to name only a few events. This comprehensive text addresses all of the subjects that a reader who is new to the field will need to know and will be a welcome reference for practitioners at all levels. It includes a history of the discipline, biological and ecological background, principles of the field, basic scientific information on the structure and growth of trees, the complete range of dendrochronology methods, and a full description of each of the relevant subdisciplines. Individual chapters address the composition of wood, methods of field and laboratory study, dendroarchaeology, dendroclimatology, dendroecology, dendrogeomorphology, and dendrochemistry. The book also provides thorough introductions to common computer programs and methods of statistical analysis. In the final chapter, the author describes "frontiers in dendrochronology," with an eye toward future directions in the field. He concludes with several useful appendixes, including a listing of tree and shrub species that have been used successfully by dendrochronologists. Throughout, photographs and illustrations visually represent the state of knowledge in the field.

Book Cyanidioschyzon merolae

Download or read book Cyanidioschyzon merolae written by Tsuneyoshi Kuroiwa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book highlights the importance of Cyanidioschyzon merolae (C. merolae), an ultrasmall unicellular red alga, as a model eukaryote organism. The chapters introduce recent studies on C. merolae, from culture, synchronization and isolation methods of nucleic acids, proteins and organelles for molecular biological and cytological analyses, as well as its application in genetic engineering of environmental-stress-tolerant crops and oil production. In addition to discussing recent advances based on the complete genome information and molecular biological techniques such as genetic modifications and bioinformatics, the book includes visualization aids demonstrating that both classical and recent imaging techniques of fluorescent and electron microscopy can be applied to analyses of C. merolae. This publication offers a definitive resource for both beginners and professionals studying C. merolae, particularly in the field of molecular biology, evolutionary biology, morphology, biochemistry and cell biology, as well as those interested in its applications in medical sciences and agriculture.

Book Behavioural Analysis of Crime

Download or read book Behavioural Analysis of Crime written by Donna Youngs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intense interest in 'offender profiling' generated by FBI special agents, gave rise to an explosion of studies in a new area called ’investigative psychology’ by its originator David Canter. This develops understanding of offenders' behaviour that can be harnessed to improve investigations. In this rapidly developing area much has been learnt about what offenders reveal about themselves through their styles of offending. Beyond criminals’ actions the location of their crimes can also reveal where the offender lives or which offences can be linked as part of the same series. Investigative psychologists also explore how to interview witnesses and suspects and assess the veracity of accounts given. The variation in criminal style across crimes as diverse as arson, burglary, hostage negotiation, serial killing and sexual assault is reviewed, using narrative theory and criminals’ emotional experience when offending as the basis for explaining these variations. This provides a framework for drawing inferences about offenders' characteristics. Studies in investigative psychology require a special methodology, developed by David Canter to allow scientific explorations in such a challenging field, previously assumed not to be open empirical study. The practical potential and applications of the research are given, as well as a selection of commentaries on the cutting edge debates that are driving the future of the investigative psychology. This new discipline is of relevance to forensic psychologists in many different settings, criminologists and law enforcement agencies, bringing together work that lays out current achievements and sets the agenda for future research in the field.
