Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outbreaks of the Western Spruce Budworm in the American Northern Rocky Mountain Area From 1922 Through 1971 Research on the western spruce budworm in recent years has been concerned chiefly with its population dynamics, behavior, genetic characteristics, and chemical control. Few investigations have been directed specifically to its relationship with its host tree species or to the patterns of its outbreaks. Such studies must ultimately be made. Fortunately, much basic information useful for these studies exists in numerous reports that document details of the chronology, geographic distribution, and general severity of many of the budworm outbreaks in the two Forest Service Regions. The general purpose here is to review this information (mostly unpublished) as a background for continuing biological and ecological studies of this important forest insect pest and as an appropriate reference for investigations into its epidemiology. Specifically, our intent here is to (1) consolidate, summarize, and present information about the location, host types, duration, effects, and measures for control applied in past outbreaks; (2) discuss factors thrt appear to relate to the location, duration, and probable effect of budworm outbreaks in the the Regions; and (3) identify problems for further study to more accurately assess the impact possibilities of outbreaks of the budworm in host forests managed for specific uses. Book Stem Volume Losses in Grand Firs Topkilled by Western Spruce Budworm in Idaho

Download or read book Stem Volume Losses in Grand Firs Topkilled by Western Spruce Budworm in Idaho written by George T. Ferrell and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mature grand firs (Abies grandis [Dougl. ex D. Don] Lindl.) were sampled in two stands, one cutover and one virgin, in the Little Salmon River drainage in west-central Idaho, to estimate stem volume losses associated with topkilling. Damage to the stands resulted from three outbreaks of western spruce budworm (Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman) in 1922-30, 1952-55, and 1969-78. Stems of the firs were dissected and examined for reductions in height and radial growth, stem deformities, and decay associated with topkills. Merchantable volume losses (to a minimum 4-inch diameter top) were calculated for each outbreak. Greatest volume loss was associated with tops killed by the 1922-30 outbreak. Loss varied widely among the trees and stands sampled. In the cutover stand, which received a sanitation cutting in the late 1960's, firs topkilled by the 1922-30 outbreak averaged losses of 9.5 ft3 (0.3 m3), amounting to 11.1 percent of merchantable stem volume. In the vigin stand, losses averaged 26.3 ft3 (0.3 m3) or 20.5 percent of stem volume. Topkill-associated decays, caused mainly by Indian paint fungus (Echinodontium tinctorium Ell. and Ev.) were responsible for most of this loss. Smaller volume losses were recorded in firs topkilled by the 1952-55 outbreak. Losses per tree averaged 3.3 ft3 (0.1 m3) or 5.4 percent in the cutover stand, and 0.5 ft3 (0.02 m3) or 0.3 percent in the virgin stand. These losses resulted mainly from height growth reductions rather than decay. No merchantable volume losses were recorded for the 1969-78 outbreak.

Download or read book Seed Dissemination in Small Clearcuttings in North central California written by Philip M. McDonald and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a 1964-1967 study on the Challenge Experimental Forest, seedfall was evaluated in 2-, 5-, and 10-acre circular clearcuttings. During the 4 years, 10 seed crops, ranging from light to bumper, were produced by ponderosa pine. white fir, Douglas-fir, and incense cedar. Seedfall ranged from 76 to 40,691 sound seed per acre (188 to 100,547/ha) for a single species in a given year. From 89 to 100 percent of each species' seed fell within an area 1 1/2 times the height of the average dominant tree. Overall, seed distribution was highly variable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended as a general text for undergraduates studying the manage ment of forest insect pests. It is divided into four parts: insects, ecology, manage ment, and practice. Part I, Insects, contains two chapters. The first is intended to provide an overview of the general attributes of insects. Recognizing that it is impossible to adequately treat such a diverse and complex group of organisms in such a short space, I have attempted to highlight those insectan characteristics that make them difficult animals to combat. I have also tried to expose the insects' weak points, those attributes that make them vulnerable to manipulation by human actions. Even so, this first chapter will seem inadequate and sketchy to many of my colleagues. Ideally, this book should be used in conjunction with a laboratory manual covering insect anatomy, physiology, biology, behavior, and classifica tion in much greater depth-in fact, this is how I organize my forest entomology course. It is hoped that this first chapter will provide nonentomologists with a general feel for the insects and with a broad understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, while Chapter 2 will provide a brief overview of the diverse insect fauna that attacks the various parts of forest trees and their products.
