Book Outback Governesses

Download or read book Outback Governesses written by Paula Heelan and published by . This book was released on 2017-05-16 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outback Governesses is collection of eye-opening stories about fourteen governesses who drop in, Mary Poppins-like, to educate children in Australia's remotest rural areas and in return receive a bush education of their own... The governesses are often young women from urban backgrounds, and they become part of the family they work for as well as the local community, and share the trials and tribulations of station life. They fall in and out of love, learn to ride horses and motorbikes, explore spectacular parts of Australia, help with station work, cook and eat with the family, attend rodeos, campdrafts, country races, and the local shows, and other bush events. There are medical emergencies, seasonal floods, bushfire and drought that all affect station life and the school routine. And then there are the unwelcome visitors to liven things up - snakes, bats, mosquitoes, centipedes, flies, feral pigs, red back spiders and the massive insect explosions following rain. There is always something happening and you can never be sure what the day will bring. Living and working in isolated areas can mean battling poor access to technology, teaching children who speak English as a second language and learning how to engage and motivate children who might be the only student in the classroom. Days can swing from triumphant, hilarious and joyful, to downright difficult - but it's clear from the tales in this collection, the rewards of teaching outback far outweigh the disadvantages - there is nothing like a bush education.

Book My Outback Life

Download or read book My Outback Life written by Toni Tapp Coutts and published by Hachette Australia. This book was released on 2017-03-28 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having grown up on the massive Killarney cattle station near Katherine, NT, Toni Tapp Coutts was well prepared when her husband, Shaun, took a job at McArthur River Station in the Gulf Country, 600 kilometres away near the Queensland border. Toni became cook, counsellor, housekeeper and nurse to the host of people who lived on McArthur River and the constant stream of visitors. She made firm friends, created the Heartbreak Bush Ball and started riding campdraft in rodeos all over the Territory, becoming one of the NT's top riders. In the midst of this busy life she raised three children and saw them through challenges; she dealt with snakes in her washing basket; she kept in touch with her large, sprawling Tapp family, and she fell deeply in love with the Gulf Country. Filled with the warmth and humour readers will remember from A SUNBURNT CHILDHOOD, this next chapter in Toni's life is both an adventure and a heartwarming memoir, and will introduce readers to a part of Australia few have experienced.

He is particularly intrigued by the reclusive 'Boss Lady', Miss Becky, who is also American. Miss Becky, disturbed by the young American's presence, finds herself reliving the days of her youth - her life in New York, her arrival in Australia and her early days as a governess in the outback. The story of 'the American governess' unfolds through her memories. As Chase listens to Nellie's version of the story, he comes to realise that he too might never leave the outback. Book excerpt: 'For anyone with a taste for social history and perhaps some feeling for the contrast between the romantic triumphs of fictional governesses and the fate of the living species self-portrayed here, this valuable book should be a special pleasure' - Tess van Sommers, Sydney Morning Herald 'It is a rare pleasure to read a book that is excellent in every way: research, writing, balance, interpretation... this is not a book to read about, but to read' - Nancy Kessing, The Australian In the second half of the nineteenth century a number of women, sponsored by the Female Middle Class Emigration Society, left Britain to seek a better life in the colonies. Unmarried and unemployed, they were among the many educated genteel women who were endeavouring to find work as governesses, then one of the few occupations open to them. In letters back to the Society these women reported on life as they saw it in the colonies during the years 1862-1882. They tell of their travails; of their adjustments to strange and often hostile environments; of their loneliness, their failures and their successes. Most importantly, they give fresh and disarming views on colonials and colonial society, touching on aspects of pioneering experience and of life in the towns of seven countries during a fascinating period in history.

And as for his plea that Blythe should work in his Outback practice while his broken arm healed...well! But for some reason Blythe agreed. And the more she saw Cal — his dedication, his caring, his unnervingly sexy smile — the harder it was to remember why she was off men....
