Book excerpt: Lieutenant Jodenny Scott is a hero. She has the medals and the scars to prove it. She's cooling her heels on Kookaburra, recovering from injuries sustained during the fiery loss of her last ship, the Yangtze, and she's bored -- so bored, in fact, that she takes a berth on the next ship out. That's a mistake. The Aral Sea isn't anyone's idea of a get-well tour. Jodenny's handed a division full of misfits, incompetents, and criminals. She's a squared-away officer. She thinks she can handle it all. She's wrong. Aral Sea isn't a happy ship. And it's about to get a lot unhappier. As Aral Sea enters the Alcheringa -- the alien-constructed space warp that allows giant settler-ships to travel between worlds, away from all help or hope -- Jodenny comes face to face something powerful enough to dwarf even the unknown force that destroyed her last ship and left her with missing memories and bloody nightmares. Lieutenant Jodenny Scott is about to be introduced to love. Author Sandra McDonald brings her personal knowledge of the military, and of the subtle interplay between men and women on deployment, to a stirring tale that mixes ancient Australian folklore with the colonization of the stars. Book excerpt: "More than 150 people were hanged in Western Australia between 1840 and 1964. Some had committed heinous crimes for profit or vengeance; some had killed out of jealousy, misunderstanding or madness. Others were hanged simply because they were victims of their times - prejudices and ill-fated circumstances leading them inexorably towards the gallows." "Focussing on the period from first settlement to the eve of World War I, historian Simon Adams skillfully places the circumstances of victims and perpetrators against the backdrop of their era, revealing the stories behind the hangings. We hear last words, feel the heartbreaking fear of the walk to the gallows and watch as bodies dangle at the end of a noose. This is a social history of the dark side of Western Australia's past." --Book Jacket.

Book Tales of Animal Vengeance in the Fantasy World

Download or read book Tales of Animal Vengeance in the Fantasy World written by Amrahs Atina and published by Mahesh Dutt Sharma. This book was released on 2023-12-25 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to a world where imagination takes flight, where creatures of myth and legend roam, and where the untamed wilderness is a battleground for epic battles of vengeance. In this book, "Battles of the Beasts: Tales of Animal Vengeance in the Fantasy World," we journey into a realm where animals are imbued with magical powers, where kingdoms rise and fall, and where the laws of nature and fantasy intertwine in mesmerizing ways. Get ready to be swept away by a collection of fantastical stories that delve into the realm of animal vengeance like never before. In "Battles of the Beasts," we continue this tradition by weaving animal protagonists into the fabric of fantastical worlds, where they rise against their oppressors, harness their magic, and seek retribution for the wrongs inflicted upon them. The stories in this book are inspired by a wide array of creatures from mythology and folklore, from majestic dragons to wise phoenixes, from cunning werewolves to graceful unicorns. These creatures come alive with vivid personalities, magical abilities, and unyielding determination as they navigate the challenges and perils of their fantastical realms, seeking to right the wrongs done to them and their kind. Through their tales, we explore the depths of their emotions, the complexities of their worlds, and their unwavering pursuit of vengeance. "Battles of the Beasts" is not just a collection of stories about animals seeking revenge in a fantasy world; it is a reflection on the power of imagination, the importance of empathy, and the timeless human desire for justice. It invites us to ponder the meaning of power, the consequences of oppression, and the morality of revenge. It challenges us to question societal norms, to examine our biases and assumptions, and to explore the complexities of good and evil. It ignites our imaginations and transports us to worlds where animals are not just passive characters, but active agents shaping their destinies. As the author of these tales, I have drawn upon my love for fantasy literature, my fascination with myth and folklore, and my admiration for animals to create these stories. I have been inspired by the rich tapestry of fantasy worlds, the diversity of creatures that populate them, and the limitless possibilities of the genre. I have also been moved by the timeless themes of justice, equality, and the plight of the oppressed, which are just as relevant in the fantastical realms as they are in our world. Through these stories, I hope to transport readers to worlds where the fantastical and the natural collide, where animals are not just passive entities, but active participants in shaping their destinies.

Book Film Criticism as Cultural Fantasy

Download or read book Film Criticism as Cultural Fantasy written by Andrew McGregor and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an unprecedented analysis of the dynamics of cultural representation and interpretation in film criticism. It examines how French critical reception of Australian cinema since the revival period of the 1970s has evolved as a narrative of perpetual discovery, and how a clear parallel can be drawn between French critics' reading of Australian film and their interpretation of an exotic Australian national identity. In French critical writing on Australian cinema, Australian identity is frequently defined in terms of extremes of cultural specificity and cultural anonymity. On the one hand, French critics construct a Euro-centric orientalist fantasy of Australia as not only a European Antipodes, but the antithesis of Europe. At the same time, French critics have tended to subordinate Australian cultural identity within the framework of a resented Anglo-American filmic and cultural hegemony. The book further explores this marginalisation by examining the influence of the French auteur paradigm, particularly in reference to the work of Jane Campion, as well as by discussing the increasingly problematic notion of national identity, and indeed national cinemas, within the universal framework of international film culture.

Book Fears and Fantasies

Download or read book Fears and Fantasies written by Kate Murphy and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fears and Fantasies: Modernity, Gender, and the Rural-Urban Divide explores the ways in which fantasies about returning to, or revitalising, rural life helped to define Western modernity in the early twentieth century. Scholarship addressing responses to modernity has focused on urban space and fears about the effects of city life; few studies have considered the 'rural' to be as critical as the 'urban' in understanding modernity. This book argues that the rural is just as significant a reference point as the urban in discourses about modernity. Using a rich Australian case study to illuminate broader international themes, it focuses on the role of gender in ideas about the rural-urban divide, showing how the country was held up against the 'unnatural' city as a space in which men were more 'masculine' and women more 'feminine'. Fears and Fantasies is an innovative and important contribution to scholarship in the fields of history and gender studies.

Book The Palgrave Handbook of Global Fantasy

Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of Global Fantasy written by Elana Gomel and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-07 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is the first-of-its-kind comprehensive overview of fantasy outside the Anglo-American hegemony. While most academic studies of fantasy follow the well-trodden path of focusing on Tolkien, Rowling, and others, our collection spotlights rich and unique fantasy literatures in India, Australia, Italy, Greece, Poland, Russia, China, and many other areas of Europe, Asia, and the global South. The first part focuses on the theoretical aspects of fantasy, broadening and modifying existing definitions to accommodate the global reach of the genre. The second part contains essays illuminating specific cultures, countries, and religious or ethnic traditions. From Aboriginal myths to (self)-representation of Tibet, from the appropriation of the Polish Witcher by the American pop culture to modern Greek fantasy that does not rely on stories of Olympian deities, and from Israeli vampires to Talmudic sages, this collection is an indispensable reading for anyone interested in fantasy fiction and global literature.
