Book Out Windham Way

Download or read book Out Windham Way written by Larry Tompkins and published by . This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 400 illustrations culled from the author's remarkable collection of historic Catskill Mountain photographs, maps, and ephemera document the visual record of the Greene County villages of Windham, Prattsville, Ashland, Big Hollow (Maplecrest), Hensonville, and their outlying settlements such as East Windham, Union Society, Red Falls, Brook Lynne, and North Settlement from the 1890s through the 1940s. Settled shortly after the Revolution, these Catskill mountaintop communities began as a scattering of subsistence farms and mill towns harvesting forest resources. In the early 1800s turnpikes brought commerce and travelers, and the seeds were sown for what would become one of the premier summer vacation venues in Upstate New York. That hospitality tradition continues today as the region has become a year-round vacation destination with one of New York¿s largest and finest ski areas. Nearly forty years ago, Larry Tompkins, a seventh-generation resident of Greene County¿s Catskill mountaintop community, began collecting antique photographs, postcards and ephemera¿business cards, invoices, bills of sale, advertisements¿of the northern Catskill Mountains. Over the years that collection grew to become one of the most remarkable records of community life to be found anywhere in the Catskill Mountain region. The 400 photographs, maps, and ephemera in this book are just a sample.

Book excerpt: The life of Robert Frost, brilliantly re-imagined by the author of the acclaimed I Should Be Extremely Happy in Your Company Called "a spellbinding prose stylist"(Los Angeles Times), Brian Hall drew extraordinary praise for his novel I Should Be Extremely Happy in Your Company, in which he captured the personal lives of Lewis and Clark. Now he turns his talents to Robert Frost, arguably America's most famous poet. Through the revelatory voice of fiction, Hall gives us an artist toughened by tragedy, whose intimacy with death gave life to his poetry-for him, the preeminent symbol of man's form-giving power. This is the exquisitely rendered portrait of one man's rages, guilt, generosity, and defiant persistence-as much a fictional masterwork as it is a meditation on greatness.

Book excerpt: The prize-winning author of The Memory of Love investigates London’s hidden nature and marginalized communities in this fascinating novel. London, 2014. A fox makes its way across Waterloo Bridge. The distraction causes two pedestrians to collide—Jean, an American studying the habits of urban foxes, and Attila, a Ghanaian psychiatrist. Attila has arrived in London with two tasks: to deliver a keynote speech on trauma, and to contact a friend’s daughter Ama, his “niece” who hasn’t called home in a while. Ama has been swept up in an immigration crackdown, and now her young son Tano is missing. Jean offers to help Attila by mobilizing her network volunteer fox spotters. Soon, rubbish men, security guards, hotel doormen, traffic wardens—mainly West African immigrants who work the myriad streets of London—come together to help. As the search for Tano continues, a deepening friendship between Attila and Jean unfolds. Attila’s time in London causes him to question his own ideas about trauma, the values of the society he finds himself in, and a personal grief of his own. In this delicate tale of love and loss, of thoughtless cruelty and unexpected community, Aminatta Forna asks us to consider our co-existence with one another and all living creatures, and the true nature of happiness.

Book Everything Is Under Control

Download or read book Everything Is Under Control written by Phyllis Grant and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Esquire Best Cookbooks of 2020 and a Washington Post Best Food Books of 2020 “In epigrammatic, nearly poetic diction, Grant . . . reminds us of how transformative the junctures where food and life collide can be.” —The New York Times Book Review “What a beautiful, rich, and poetic memoir this is . . . Like the best chefs, Phyllis Grant knows how to make a masterpiece from a few simple ingredients: truth, taste, poignancy, and love.” —Elizabeth Gilbert, author of City of Girls and Eat, Pray, Love Phyllis Grant’s Everything Is Under Control is a memoir about appetite as it comes, goes, and refocuses its object of desire. Grant’s story follows the sometimes smooth, sometimes jagged, always revealing contours of her life: from her days as a dancer struggling to find her place at Julliard, to her experiences in and out of four-star kitchens in New York City, to falling in love with her future husband and leaving the city after 9/11 for California, where her children are born. All the while, a sense of longing pulses in each stage as she moves through the headspace of a young woman longing to be sustained by a city into that of a mother now sustaining a family herself. Written with the transparency of a diarist, Everything Is Under Control is an unputdownable series of vignettes followed by tried-and-true recipes from Grant’s table—a heartrending yet unsentimental portrait of the highs and lows of young adulthood, motherhood, and a life in the kitchen.

Book Pappyland

Download or read book Pappyland written by Wright Thompson and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller! “A warm and loving reflection that, like good bourbon, will stand the test of time.” —Eric Asimov, The New York Times “Bourbon is for sharing, and so is Pappyland.”—The Wall Street Journal The story of how Julian Van Winkle III, the caretaker of the most coveted cult Kentucky Bourbon whiskey in the world, fought to protect his family's heritage and preserve the taste of his forebears, in a world where authenticity, like his product, is in very short supply. Following his father’s death decades ago, Julian Van Winkle stepped in to try to save the bourbon business his grandfather had founded on the mission statement: “We make fine bourbon—at a profit if we can, at a loss if we must, but always fine bourbon.” With the company in its wilderness years, Julian committed to safeguarding his namesake’s legacy or going down with the ship. Then he discovered that hundreds of barrels from the family distillery had survived their sale to a multinational conglomerate. The whiskey that Julian produced after recovering those barrels would immediately be hailed as the greatest in the world—and soon would be the hardest to find. Once they had been used up, a fresh challenge began: preserving the taste of Pappy in a new age. Wright Thompson was invited to ride along as Julian undertook the task. From the Van Winkle family, Wright learned not only about great bourbon but about complicated legacies and the rewards of honoring your people and your craft—lessons that he couldn’t help but apply to his own work and life. May we all be lucky enough to find some of ourselves, as Wright Thompson did, in Pappyland.
