Download or read book All Our Yesterdays written by Natalia Ginzburg and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From “one of the most distinguished writers of modern Italy” (New York Review of Books), a classic novel of society in the midst of a war. This powerful novel is set against the background of Italy from 1939 to 1944, from the anxious months before the country entered the war, through the war years, to the allied victory with its trailing wake of anxiety, disappointment, and grief. In the foreground are the members of two families. One is rich, the other is not. In All Our Yesterdays, as in all of Ms. Ginzburg’s novels, terrible things happen—suicide, murder, air raids, and bombings. But seemingly less overwhelming events, like a family quarrel, adultery, or a deception, are given equal space, as if to say that, to a victim, adultery and air raids can be equally maiming. All Our Yesterdays gives a sharp portrait of a society hungry for change, but betrayed by war. During the period described in the novel, Natalia Ginzburg was married to the writer Leone Ginzburg. Because of his underground activities, he was interned under Mussolini’s reign, along with his family, in a restricted area in the Abruzzi. When the Ginzburgs later moved to Rome, Leone was arrested and tortured by the fascists, and killed, leaving Natalia alone to raise her three children. Download or read book Memories of Yesteryears written by Carolyn Hambrick Hatcher and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-10-26 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early morning rain had stopped and a cool mist shrouded the lonesome mountainside. The smell was fresh and invigorating to me as I stood beside the old hickory tree with its new leaves, an iridescent bright green, glowing against the dreary gray sky. I stood quietly and watched a lone eagle soar above, looking for an unsuspecting prey hidden in the overgrown weeds in the long neglected fields. I had stayed away too long, now, I wanted to return to the source of my childhood.

Book excerpt: Stefan Zweig (1881–1942) was a poet, novelist, and dramatist, but it was his biographies that expressed his full genius, recreating for his international audience the Elizabethan age, the French Revolution, the great days of voyages and discoveries. In this autobiography he holds the mirror up to his own age, telling the story of a generation that "was loaded down with a burden of fate as was hardly any other in the course of history." Zweig attracted to himself the best minds and loftiest souls of his era: Freud, Yeats, Borgese, Pirandello, Gorky, Ravel, Joyce, Toscanini, Jane Addams, Anatole France, and Romain Rolland are but a few of the friends he writes about.

But on Miranda’s twelfth birthday, Billy has a mysterious falling-out with her mother and suddenly disappears from Miranda’s life. She doesn’t hear from him again until sixteen years later when she receives unexpected news: Billy has died and left her Prospero Books, which is teetering on bankruptcy—and one final scavenger hunt. When Miranda returns home to Los Angeles and to Prospero Books—now as its owner—she finds clues that Billy has hidden for her inside novels on the store’s shelves, in locked drawers of his apartment upstairs, in the name of the store itself. Miranda becomes determined to save Prospero Books and to solve Billy’s last scavenger hunt. She soon finds herself drawn into a journey where she meets people from Billy’s past, people whose stories reveal a history that Miranda’s mother has kept hidden—and the terrible secret that tore her family apart. It’s a love letter to reading and bookstores, and a testament to how our histories shape who we become.

Book The Snows of Yesteryear

Download or read book The Snows of Yesteryear written by Gregor Von Rezzori and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2012-08-15 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gregor von Rezzori was born in Czernowitz, a onetime provincial capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire that was later to be absorbed successively into Romania, the USSR, and the Ukraine—a town that was everywhere and nowhere, with a population of astonishing diversity. Growing up after World War I and the collapse of the empire, Rezzori lived in a twilit world suspended between the formalities of the old nineteenth-century order which had shaped his aristocratic parents and the innovations, uncertainties, and raw terror of the new century. The haunted atmosphere of this dying world is beautifully rendered in the pages of The Snows of Yesteryear. The book is a series of portraits—amused, fond, sometimes appalling—of Rezzori’s family: his hysterical and histrionic mother, disappointed by marriage, destructively obsessed with her children’s health and breeding; his father, a flinty reactionary, whose only real love was hunting; his haughty older sister, fated to die before thirty; his earthy nursemaid, who introduced Rezzori to the power of storytelling and the inevitability of death; and a beloved governess, Bunchy. Telling their stories, Rezzori tells his own, holding his early life to the light like a crystal until it shines for us with a prismatic brilliance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No longer will you walk around in defeat. No longer will you count yourself out of the promises of God because of your past. No longer will you accept the “final say” of others because you have lost your confidence that stems from a power spring source that cannot be contained by man. No longer will you allow your thought process to persuade you into believing that you have reached your full potential and that what you have to offer is no longer valuable. No, sir. No, ma’am. You still matter to God. You are still a part of His perfect plan. You shall not decay on the inside because of the heartbreak and pain the world has thrown on your shoulders, but you shall live to see the goodness of the Lord. The best part about this journey is that we may have had some brokenness, but I hear God speaking life with these words: “They say damaged, but I say not so!”
