The chapters of this work are the result of a few excursions in the now unhappily neglected country parts of England - such parts as are not seen from. A railway train. The appreciation for' such subjects is not new, for I find articles in the Gentlemen's Magazine that date as far back as 1745, in which the writers point out interesting parts of England, for the guidance of ingenious travellers. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BEST SELLER • The basis for the HBO documentary now streaming on HBO Max For five years, James and Deborah Fallows have travelled across America in a single-engine prop airplane. Visiting dozens of towns, the America they saw is acutely conscious of its problems—from economic dislocation to the opioid scourge—but it is also crafting solutions, with a practical-minded determination at dramatic odds with the bitter paralysis of national politics. At times of dysfunction on a national level, reform possibilities have often arisen from the local level. The Fallowses describe America in the middle of one of these creative waves. Their view of the country is as complex and contradictory as America itself, but it also reflects the energy, the generosity and compassion, the dreams, and the determination of many who are in the midst of making things better. Our Towns is the story of their journey—and an account of a country busy remaking itself.

Their rise and the chief buildings of past ages, remarkable episodes and phases of old-time social life, receive 'con sideration. It will be shown how towns have risen under the protection of castles, how others have grown under the care of religious houses, while others have advanced under royal patronage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Out of Town: A Rural Episode "Do you know, Mr. Gray," asked my estimable wife early one morning, as she raised the sash and threw open the blinds of the chamber-window, in our house in Merry-field Place, "that the spring is here? Observe how balmy is the air, and see how the buds are swelling on the trees, and the grass sending forth its green blades in the courtyard. Listen to the song of that bluebird, perched upon the. swaying branch of the elm, and hearken, too, to the buzzing of the early flies, enjoying the warm sunshine on the window panes. Yes, the spring is here, my dear, and we are on the verge, as the poet hath it, of the 'delicate-footed May'; and this reminds me - oh! sad anticlimax - that you have not yet obtained a house for the coming year, and that, before ten days go by, unless you do, we shall be homeless, having neither a shelter for, nor a place wherein to lay, our heads." "I am fully aware of it, my dear," I replied; "and I have for the last month, as you are aware, travelled over the greater part of the city searching for a proper residence, without finding one. I have half-decided to look no further" - "That would be just like you, Mr. Gray," interrupted my wife; "you would be willing to sit down quietly, with folded hands, and let the future take care of itself." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Doings of the Bodley Family: In Town and Country The flies had been too sleepy, but the children had watched out of the front of the house while the sun was journeying, and they had seen what was going on Opposite. The windows and doors of num ber 101 were wide Open, and three long carts stood in the street. They were furniture-wagons, and men were busy stowing in them the contents of the house. The sidewalk was lively with pieces of furniture that had never come so near each other before. 'there stood the pompous etage're from the parlor, swelling out grandly; and yet a towel-horse, standing on two legs only, was rearing up against it. The oil portrait of the great-grandfather, with white neck-handkerchief and his head set on one side like a robin's, was sitting in a lowly rocking-chair hauled up from the kitchen, which gave a. Thumping sound in its lower part whenever rocked in. The sofa stood against the wall, stretching its arms out; and it was very improper, but a hat-tub had sat down in it. Things were put on the cart, not in order of merit, but as they happened to fit in best though to be sure the parlor furniture was wrapped up in pieces of old carpet, - but how different that was from having one's feet on the best carpet! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Town How small this world of ours is, and how close we are, all unknowing, to one another! I had set out to write the story of the Old Town with no thought that it touched the land across the seas and its people in any closer way than through these pages, and through the abiding affection of a few of its children who, like myself, have wandered far from home. And while I wrote there fell into my hands the account Of a sale of some building lots half a dozen years ago, in Jersey City, part of a property which for three hundred years had belonged to the Van Riepen family. And the Van Riepen name was shown to mean from Ribe the Old Town itself. This is the historical record. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The English Countryside Classic Reprint

Download or read book The English Countryside Classic Reprint written by Ernest C. Pulbrook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Countryside WE live in times when change is so rapid that customs and institu tions of even a decade ago are no longer familiar. Everywhere the old is giving place to the new, and the methods of our forefathers are too leisurely for this hurrying age. The whole face of England is being rapidly altered, and this is perhaps more noticeable in the country, even in the most remote districts, than in the towns, where we look for change and improvements. So many old landmarks are being swept away that it seems time to call a halt and at least to take a survey before the old is banished by the new. In the towns it is perhaps almost too late to begin to preserve the buildings of the past, but in the country it is different. During most of the nine teenth century the country stagnated while the towns grew and prospered, but now ease of communication and the desire to see the country has brought about a change the city is being regarded only as a workshop and the country as the place in which to live. People, too, are beginning to understand that rural England is, and has always been, as important as the towns, and that scattered up and down the land are places not only beautiful in themselves, but full of the associations of the past. Each has played its part in the making of England as we know it to-day, and each has some story to tell, if we can only learn to read. An old rubbish heap may contain a wealth of romance, and a commonplace custom may have had its origin in the days when the inhabitants of these islands were little better than barbarians.
