Book excerpt: The provocative and authoritative history of the origins of Christian America in the New Deal era We're often told that the United States is, was, and always has been a Christian nation. But in One Nation Under God, historian Kevin M. Kruse reveals that the belief that America is fundamentally and formally Christian originated in the 1930s. To fight the "slavery" of FDR's New Deal, businessmen enlisted religious activists in a campaign for "freedom under God" that culminated in the election of their ally Dwight Eisenhower in 1952. The new president revolutionized the role of religion in American politics. He inaugurated new traditions like the National Prayer Breakfast, as Congress added the phrase "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance and made "In God We Trust" the country's first official motto. Church membership soon soared to an all-time high of 69 percent. Americans across the religious and political spectrum agreed that their country was "one nation under God." Provocative and authoritative, One Nation Under God reveals how an unholy alliance of money, religion, and politics created a false origin story that continues to define and divide American politics to this day.

Book One Nation Under God

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This inspirational book celebrates the faith and courage of members of a traditional church that -- in 20th century America -- still struggling for religious freedom. Their Greatest challenge is the ongoing legal battle against the 1990 Supreme Court decision citing peyote use to deny the Native American Church the First Amendment right to 'the free exercise of religion'. Legislation providing an exemption to the Native American Church was overturned by the Supreme Court in 1997. The eloquent personal testimony offered by Church members from many different tribes demonstrates the spiritual strength of this religious tradition and makes it clear that peyote is not used to obtain 'visions' but to heal the body and spirit and to teach righteousness. Peyote meetings play, which stress abstinence from alcohol, truthfulness, family obligations, economic self-suffering, service, and prayer. This book is important reading for any one who cares about spiritual values, political process, and the individual's freedom to worship according to the dictates of conscience.

Book excerpt: Inscribed near a broken chain at the base of the Statue of Liberty are these words: Give me your tired, your poor; Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free; The wretched refuse of your teeming shore; Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me; I lift my lamp beside the golden door! Lady Liberty proclaims freedom every day to anyone with a heart to hear her. Yet, although the opportunity to experience the benefits of legal freedom exists in our nation, many people still live in bondage to a number of injustices. In One Nation Under God, Dr. Evans addresses freedom, justice, economics, racism, education and politics from a kingdom perspective. Citizens will be moved to display biblical justice, thus working to build a society based on the foundational principles of God’s word. If God's people are to reverse the course that this nation is heading down, believers must care about what God cares about, and implement specific strategies to change this nation. This booklet is a part of the Life Under God series, a 5-book series adapted from the 5 sections found in The Kingdom Agenda, the legacy work of Dr. Tony Evans. This booklet is based on the “One Nation under God” section.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why churches in some democratic nations wield enormous political power while churches in other democracies don't In some religious countries, churches have drafted constitutions, restricted abortion, and controlled education. In others, church influence on public policy is far weaker. Why? Nations under God argues that where religious and national identities have historically fused, churches gain enormous moral authority—and covert institutional access. These powerful churches then shape policy in backrooms and secret meetings instead of through open democratic channels such as political parties or the ballot box. Through an in-depth historical analysis of six Christian democracies that share similar religious profiles yet differ in their policy outcomes—Ireland and Italy, Poland and Croatia, and the United States and Canada—Anna Grzymała-Busse examines how churches influenced education, abortion, divorce, stem cell research, and same-sex marriage. She argues that churches gain the greatest political advantage when they appear to be above politics. Because institutional access is covert, they retain their moral authority and their reputation as defenders of the national interest and the common good. Nations under God shows how powerful church officials in Ireland, Canada, and Poland have directly written legislation, vetoed policies, and vetted high-ranking officials. It demonstrates that religiosity itself is not enough for churches to influence politics—churches in Italy and Croatia, for example, are not as influential as we might think—and that churches allied to political parties, such as in the United States, have less influence than their notoriety suggests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "BLESSED IS THE NATION WHOSEGOD IS THE LORD"(Psalms 33:12)America-imperfect as it may be-is still the shining light on the hill to all the world. But it is now at a crossroad. Will we choose to be a nation under God or without God? America's Choice examines the overwhelming evidence of God's hand in the destiny of America-the divine calling of the Founding Fathers, their understanding that the Constitution is dependent upon a moral people, that morality requires religion, and that religion's purpose is to seek God's will.Accordingly, America's Choice explores God's will on critical moral matters such as the role of religion in the public sector, abortion, zero population growth, and capitalism vs. socialism. It proposes the ultimate solution to our country's ills, namely, a return to faith and family. In so doing this book challenges those revisionist historians, judicial activists, and secularists who would transform us from a nation under God to a nation without God. In essence, this book gives us cause to reaffirm our faith in America."In the 20 years I have lived in the United States I have seen a shift in the way people think and talk about this country. My reading of the situation is this: nothing is more essential to the United States than asking: "Why does this country exist? To what end was it created: And then reading original sources of its founding to discover the breathtaking answers. Answers that are brilliantly illustrated by Tad Callister in America's Choice."
