Book excerpt: A 420 page chronicle of the compilers' first six generations of Dayton ancestors in America. The compilation begins in 1617 with Ralph in Ashford, Kent and follows him to America, descending through Samuel, Abraham, Henry, David and David, spanning the years 1639 to 1807.The compilers sought primary reference and consultation, and in the effort to gather fragments of Dayton history, the work accumulated nearly 500 citations and 14 pages of works cited. The book is fully indexed and contains almost fifty images of original documents, autographs, illustrations, maps and photographs. Contextual or background information is also provided, particularly in the first few chapters, to aid understanding. The compilers' motivation for publishing many years of research is to provide family and researchers a collection of material with which to begin their own discovery. With the advantage of modern availability to information, early scholarship and family legends are confronted in the effort to expose real people. In doing so, differing interpretations are offered so the reader can draw their own conclusions and advance the dialog.

Book Genealogies of Long Island Families

Download or read book Genealogies of Long Island Families written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its inception in 1870, "The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record" has been at the forefront in publishing articles on Long Island families, many of them lengthy, definitive studies spread out over several issues. In a number of these articles the English or Dutch origin of families is established. No better purpose could be served than to gather these articles together and reprint them in their entirety, thus making available a mass of information on Long Island families that has previously been difficult to locate. With the articles appropriately consolidated and arranged, and additions and corrections from "The Record" properly appended, this two-volume compilation becomes the single greatest repository of Long Island genealogies in existence. In addition, it is fully indexed and is published with an introduction by Henry B. Hoff, former editor of "The Record."

Wells later moved to New Haven, Connecticut in 1639, and to Southold, Long Island, New York in 1640, and probably took his labor sources with him (including John). For a few years he moved to Setauket, and then returned to Jamaica. James Bayles (1811-1896), a direct descendant in the sixth generation, married Julia Halsey Day in 1835 in Morristown, New Jersey and later moved to New York City. Descendants and relatives lived in New England, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and elsewhere.

Book Some Account of the Ireland Family

Download or read book Some Account of the Ireland Family written by Joseph Norton Ireland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Account of the Ireland Family: Originally of Long Island, N. Y., 1644-1880 The genealogical records of the Ireland family, so far as conveniently accessible, were originally sought for, to ascertain the date of its settlement on American soil, and simply for the gratification and satisfaction of the writer. Other parties have since evinced an interest in them, and expressed a desire for their publication. Without attempting to give a full history of the collateral branches of the family, of whom it was found difficult to obtain accurate information, the chain of direct descent from our first American ancestor, Thomas Ireland, is perfect to the ninth generation in the male line, and to the tenth in the female line. Although the male representatives of the family in the present generation are few, some future descendant may find the present records a convenient foudation on which to enlarge and complete the genealogy of a race distinguished - with rare exceptions - for sterling integrity, easy good nature and kind-heartedness, and ready willingness to advance the interests of others, and an unambitious contentment with a medium rank in life. "Love and Peace" was the motto assigned to one of the name by the English King at Arms, in 1601. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Montaukett Indians of Eastern Long Island

Download or read book The Montaukett Indians of Eastern Long Island written by John A. Strong and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Montaukett were among the first tribes to establish relations with the English in the seventeenth century, until now very little has been written about the evolution of their interaction with the settlers. John A. Strong, a noted authority on the Indians of New York State's Long Island, has written a concise history that focuses on the issue of land tenure in the relations between the English and the Montaukett. This study covers the period from the earliest contacts to the New York Appellate Court decision in 1917—which declared the tribe to be extinct—to their current battle for the federal recognition necessary to reclaim portions of their land. Strong also looks at related issues such as cultural assimilation, political and social tensions, and patterns of economic dependency among the Montaukett.
