Book Container Molecules and Their Guests

Download or read book Container Molecules and Their Guests written by Donald J Cram and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Container Molecules and Their Guests deals with the fundamental principles and objectives that govern this rapidly developing subject and illustrates the emergence of a new field of biomimetic chemistry. The book demonstrates how a number of techniques, such as molecular modelling, synthesis, crystal structure, NMR solution structure and mass spectral structure determinations can be combined to develop a new branch of organic chemistry. It discusses the chemistry of completely new families of complexes - the carceplexes, hemicarceplexes and velcraplexes - and reviews for the first time the uses of the interiors of hemicarceplexes as a new phase for carrying out chemical reactions and for protecting unstable species. Furthermore, it illustrates how complexation and decomplexation rates are measured to provide free energies of binding, discusses new phenomena such as constrictive binding, and shows how solvophobic forces drive complexation in a variety of organic solvents. It also covers catalysis through complexation and chiral recognition in catalysis, both secondary themes of this volume. Container Molecules and Their Guests will provide stimulating reading for researchers, post-graduate students and teachers involved in bio-organic chemistry, organic chemistry, materials science, and medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry.

Book African Hosts Their Guests

Download or read book African Hosts Their Guests written by W. E. A. van Beek and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2012 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa is a 'theme park' for Western tourists to experience untouched wilderness, untamed nature, and truly 'authentic' cultures, where the hosts, too, are part of a discourse about the 'other' and ourselves, about wildness, danger and roots. Tourism is important for Africa: international tourist arrivals to Africa continue to grow, income from tourism is crucial to national economies, and tourism investments are considered among the most profitable. This edited volumedeals with the interaction of local communities with tourists coming into their areas and villages. Based upon a common theoretical approach, fourteen cases of African tourism are discussed which involve direct contact between 'hosts' and 'guests'. The viewpoint throughout is from the side of the locals, establishing how the processes of interaction shape each small scale destination. Crucial in Africa is the fact that the large majority of tourism is game oriented and the interaction between locals and visitors is very much 'tainted' by this fact. Central is the notion of the tourist bubble - the infrastructure that is generated locally (and internationally) for hosting tourists, as it is this institutional interface that tends to impact on the local society and culture, not the tourists themselves directly. The examples come from all over Africa, from the Sahara to the Eastern Cape, and from Kenyato Ghana. All contributions are based upon original fieldwork. Walter van Beek is professor of anthropology at Tilburg University and Senior Researcher at the African Studies Centre, Leiden; Annette Schmidt is curatorof the African department at the National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden, and is an archaeologist with a long experience in cultural management projects.

Book excerpt: A married couple borrows a luxurious home on the Norwegian fjords, entangling themselves in a web of lies when they pretend to be the owners. Chilling, darkly funny psychological suspense by the author of The Bird Tribunal. Married couple Karin and Kai are looking for a pleasant escape from their busy lives, and reluctantly accept an offer to stay in a luxurious holiday home in the Norwegian fjords. Instead of finding a relaxing retreat, however, their trip becomes a reminder of everything lacking in their own lives, and in a less-than-friendly meeting with their new neighbors, Karin tells a little white lie... Against the backdrop of the glistening water and within the claustrophobic walls of the ultra-modern house, Karin's insecurities blossom, and her lie grows ever bigger, entangling her and her husband in a nightmare spiral of deceits with absolutely no means of escape... Simmering with suspense and dark humor, The Guests is a gripping psychological drama about envy and aspiration... and something more menacing, hiding just below that glittering surface.

Book excerpt: MANY YEARS HAVE PASSED SINCE WE WELCOMED THE FIRST STRANGERS INTO OUR HOME. I now feel qualified to comment on our experience and include information that we would have found helpful when we took what seemed at the time quite a brave step. My husband spent all his working life in the hospitality industry and we first met whilst studying hotel and catering management at the same college back in the late 50s. Now, nominally retired, we have gone full circle - back to serving meals and making beds - and enjoying it more than ever! The difference between then and now is that we fill our empty bedrooms with guests as a pleasure, rather than solely through financial necessity. Tolerance, flexibility and a sense of humour have been needed on occasions, but our guests have been absolutely great and since starting our business our faith in humanity has soaredA". Read Helen's book for guidance on: - DOING YOUR INITIAL RESEARCH - COMPLYING WITH THE LAW - PREPARING THE ROOMS - LOOKING AFTER YOUR GUESTS - MARKETING YOUR B&B - PRICING AND BOOK KEEPING.
