Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of the United States: National, State, and Local The plan, scope, content, and temper of this book are in large measure the outgrowth of my experience as a teacher. My students, by the drift of their questions and discussions, have moulded my ideas of what a text-book ought to contain. This book is theirs as much as it is mine. That fact may help to explain why some features of American government are dilated upon at considerable length, while others are left as self-evident propositions to the perception of the reader. It explains, moreover, why the same problem is occasionally discussed from different angles, even though this has in volved some degree Of repetition. And if the general tone of the book betrays an optimist, my sufficient answer is that no man can be for many years associated with the American undergraduate and remain anything else. Book Government in the United States

Download or read book Government in the United States written by James Wilford Garner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Government in the United States: National, State, and Local Merits of Local self-government. - In the United States, local self-government is regarded as one of the chief merits of our political system, and is often declared to be one of the inalienable rights of the people. One great advantage of local self-government is that it brings government near the door of every citizen, and permits the people of each locality, who are most familiar with their own local condi tions and who know best what are their local needs, to regu late their own affairs as they see fit. Also, such a system is well calculated to secure responsibility. So long as the local authorities are chosen by the community from its own inhabitants and are constantly under the eyes of the people, they can be more effectively controlled and made amenable to local public opinion than is possible where they are chosen by authorities distantly removed. An other irnportant advantage of local self-government is that it serves as a training school for the political education of the citizens. Allow them the privilege of choosing their own local officials and of regulating their own local concerns, and their interest in public affairs will be stimulated and their political intelligence increased and broadened. This not only will tend to secure more responsible government (local, state, and national), but will produce a moreoactive type of citizenship. Book State and Municipal Government in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book State and Municipal Government in the United States Classic Reprint written by Everett Kimball and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State and Municipal Government in the United States In spite of the importance and interest of international and national questions of policy and in spite of the rapidly widening sphere of federal legislation and administration the life of an American citizen is affected more often by the agencies of local government than by those of the national government. Under the protection of the Federal Constitution the life and property of the citizen are governed and protected by state, not federal, laws. In his political capacity the citizen takes part in both the federal and the local government in accordance with state regulations. Acting under the state laws are the particular political units in which the citizen may reside - the county, city, or town. To the authorities of these the citizen most fre quently looks for governmental support and regulation. Yet these local bodies are distinctly subordinate to and created by the authority of the state and are supervised and regulated by it. It is the purpose of this book to discuss the organization, the distribution of powers and functions, and the operation of these agencies of local government. Other books have dealt with state government and state administration or with munici pal government and municipal administration, but this book covers both state and municipal government, treating the two as a single manifestation of local government. With this in mind the book has been divided into five parts. In Part I the federal system and the state constitutions as the fundamental basis of local government are discussed. Part II deals with the political system - the electorate in theory and in action, in primaries, in election campaigns, and in its direct action in the use of the initiative, referendum, and recall. Part III deals with state government - the different organs and the functions which these organs perform. State administration, which is rapidly being extended both directly and through the supervisory power of the state, is discussed in its various manifestations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Government in Missouri: Local, State, and National IN writing this book I have had in mind the needs of the children in the elementary schools of Missouri. As most of these pupils will not attend a high school or college, they should receive their training in citizen ship before they leave the elementary school. It has been the primary aim to develop in the pupil some appreciation of his membership in the state, and the rights and duties arising therefrom. Hence the text begins with the family and school, township and county, city and village, - agencies of government with which the pupil is or may be made familiar through the facts of his daily life. It has a distinct government of its own established by the people of the State. The first thirteen States of the United States had their origin in the thirteen colonies established by England in this country. Most of the other States had been organized as Territories before their admission into the union. In the United States a State is more distinctly a political organization and at the same time more definitely a member of the union and a part of the national govern ment than in any other nation of the world. Book American Civics

Download or read book American Civics written by A. G. Fradenburgh and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Civics: For the Seventh and Eighth School Years The World War has effected great changes in governmental institutions and in international relations. New issues demand attention and some old ones have lost in relative importance. In offering "American Community Civics" for High Schools and Junior High Schools, it has been the aim of the author to preserve the main features of former editions of "American Civics," while including such new material as the times demand and making the entire work up-to-date. Although a community civics, this volume deals primarily with civics and not chiefly with economics and sociology. There is sufficient attention given to community matters to fill all requirements and enough attention is paid to civics to meet the demands of state educational authorities. Each community has its own local political, economic, and sociological interests and a good teacher will not fail to give these proper attention. This growing interest is seen in the multiplicity of books relating to this subject, its general discussion in the daily and weekly press and the monthly and quar terly magazines, the formation of Societies for Promoting Good Citizenship, and especially in the great increase in the introduction of the study of Civil Government into the public and private schools, academies, and colleges in all parts of the country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Citizen's Manual, Vol. 1: Governments (National, State, and Local), The Electorate, the Civil Service What is the relation of the citizen of the United States to the governments under which he lives? This question, which is quite distinct from questions concerning his relations to his fellow-citizens, is continually recurring as the population of the country increases, the interests of the people become more complex, and the interference of government with the rights and privileges of the citizen becomes more general. And it is a problem which, from its nature, is hardly capable of a satisfactory solution; for the conditions are in a state of perpetual change. No sooner are present wants and needs provided for, than new questions arise, demanding attention. This matter of the relation of the governed to the government, is, then, pre-eminently and continually a "question of the day." Book The American Citizen in Pennsylvania

Download or read book The American Citizen in Pennsylvania written by Albert E. Maltby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Citizen in Pennsylvania: The Government of the State and of the Nation The purpose of this work is to present to the pupils in the public schools in the Commonwealth some practical infor mation as to the rights and duties which belong to American citizenship. The study of civics is {now receiving increased attention in our schools, particularly since the school laws require that teachers shall have a fair knowledge of civil government, including State and local government. In view of this legislation, a text - book to meet the needs of the schools should treat the local and State government as at least of equal importance with that of the Nation. It has been said that many a youth has grown to manhood with so little ap preciation of the Commonwealth in which he lives as to re gard it simply as a geographical division. The study of the State government and of the National Government are of equal importance. The student of civil government should begin with that which is near at hand and of immediate interest, and proceed to that which is distant and of remote concern. He should not begin with that rare and precious afterthought and flower of government, the Constitution of the United States, but with the material forms that are close at hand. In connection with the ordinary lessons in reading, the children should be made acquainted with words suggesting civic ideas, as cit izen, soldier, officer, law, justice, country, state, city, and nation. Then, in elementary lessons, the children should gain general notions of local government and organization.
