Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Common Birds and How to Know Them This is, indeed, a serious dilemma, sufficiently embarrassing and disheartening; but it is to the student arrived at such a despondent frame of mind that the writer hopes to be of use, both with his advice and by means of the plates herewith presented. As for the advice, though of the simplest, it is believed that it will prove effective. It will be given in detail in the following pages; but the most important, if the least startling features of it, may be here briefly stated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird-Life: A Guide to the Study of Our Common Birds How unusual it is to meet any one who can correctly name a dozen of our birds! One may live in the country A and still know only two or three of the one hundred and fifty or more kinds of birds that may be found during the year. Nevertheless, these gay, restless creatures, both by voice and action, constantly invite our attention, and they are far too interesting and beautiful to be ignored. No one to whom Nature appeals should be without some knowledge of these, the most attractive of her animate forms. The scientific results to be derived from the study of birds are fully realized by the naturalist. But there are other results equally important. I would have every one know of them: results that add to our pleasure in field and wood, and give fresh interest to walks that before were eventless; that quicken both ear and eye, making us hear and see where before we were deaf and blind. Then, to our surprise, we shall discover that the forests and pastures we have known all our lives are tenanted by countless feathered inhabitants whose companionship will prove a source of endless enjoyment. I would enter a special plea for the study of birds in the schools; for the more general introduction of ornithology in natural-history courses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Birds: Common Birds of Town and Country and American Game Birds Would that the same could be said of the sportsman who almost invariably is at heart a nature lover, though the primi tive instinct to kill is uppermost. Many sportsmen, however, who formerly fol lowed wild creatures only to kill, have abandoned the use of rifle and shotgun, and today are finding greater pleasure in studying and photographing their former quarry than they did in pursuing it with murderous intent. A real interest in wild life leads naturally to a love of Nature in all her varied manifestations, and this, in all lands and under all circumstances, remains a source of lasting pleasure. Book Common Birds of Town and Country

Download or read book Common Birds of Town and Country written by U. S. National Geographic Society and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Common Birds of Town and Country: With 114 Illustrations in Color and 52 in Black and White Range: Breeds from eastern North Dakota, central Minnesota, northwestern Michigan, southern Oh tario and southern New Brunswick to central Texas, southern Louisiana, central Alabama and central Georgia; winters from southern Mexico to Panama. The indigo bird is the brightest colored sparrow that visits the north, but one can hardly believe that the sprightly dandy, clad in his rich blue suit, is the mate of the inconspicuous brown bird that seeks assiduously to conceal herself in the leafy cover, as though a bit ashamed of the contrast between her working suit and the holiday garb of her spouse. The indigo is a frequenter of sprout land, of brushy thickets and of Open woodland. And the male is fond of singing his cheerful lay from the topmost twig of a tall shrub or tree, as though challenging the world to produce his equal. For such a dainty bird, the nest is a singularly inartistic structure and very carelessly built. It is placed in the crotch of some low leafy bush and is not at all difficult to find. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird Studies: For Home and School; Sixty Common Birds, Their Habits and Haunts This book is the outgrowth of four years of experience in the preparation of bird lessons for a city school of more than two thousand pupils. After beginning this line of nature work with much trepidation and many protests, the teachers soon came to favor and enjoy it. From the first lesson Bird Study was popular with the children, who looked forward to the bird lesson as the brightest hour of the week. The first purpose of this book is to present to teachers a short course in one branch of nature study in such a form that they may easily prepare themselves to teach it. It is of little use to outline courses of study in nature work and direct teachers to formulate practical lessons accordingly. Few teachers have the time, the experience or the training to enable, them to select material for proper nature lessons. They need assistance which outlines lacking the subject-matter-cannot give them. This book presents the lessons ready for class use. A second purpose is to offer to young people in school and at home a series of simple lessons on sixty common birds, the most of which may be seen in parks or woods, in city or country. In view of the intimate relation which birds bear to agriculture, a knowledge of their habits is of the highest importance to us. All observers of birds soon become bird lovers and strong defenders of their rights. If this book helps to promote a more intelligent appreciation of the usefulness of birds, and creates in some measure a more determined purpose to protect and preserve them from harm, it will have accomplished its highest aim.
