Hendrick Hudson, an Englishman, sailing in the employ of Holland merchants, started on his voyage of discovery in the "Half-Moon," April 6, 1609, from Amsterdam, and came to anchor in the "Great River of the Mountains," September 11, 1609. Upon the announcement of these discoveries at home, the enterprising merchants of North Holland, under whose auspices they had been made, united themselves into a company and received from the States-General a special trading-license or charter, dated October 11, 1614.
