Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Chinese Chances Through Europe's War In the lull of the terrible European conflict which is sweep ing around the world, we hear a word from Great China, and it is still for peace, although groaning under the despotism of Yuan shih-k'ai and menaced by the Japanese. Therefore, what moment is more auspicious for a considera tion of the Chinese as our friends and to aid them to throw off despotism, and what time more opportune to cement our good will with that wonderful Cathay, now the only other great nation of the whole planet not at war with another, and whose favor is especially valuable to us in trade opportunities for which and elsewhere other nations are now actually in armed contest? Book China and the World War Classic Reprint

Download or read book China and the World War Classic Reprint written by William Reginald Wheeler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from China and the World-War After the war, the attention of the world will more and more shift to China and the Far East. The greatest potential market of the world lies there: the greatest need for industrial and economic develop ment is there. The Far East, in general, and China, in particular, have been profoundly affected by the war: they will be even more deeply influenced during the peace which is to follow. All of the great powers have financial interests in China; after the war, these interests will come into sharp competition and rivalry. In their relations with China and with each other, the nations will face two alternatives: on the one hand, a policy leading to an imperialism and oppression which eventually will endanger the dearly-bought world peace: on the other, a course of action based on inter national justice and the development of a democracy in the Far East that will be safe for the world. These alternatives in Asia are, and will be, the same as those which the world is facing in Europe today: the writer believes they should be viewed in the light of the principles for which the larger part of mankind is now fighting and that unless this is done, on the Eastern horizon will surely gather the dark clouds of another world-storm. Book China During the War and Since the Peace Classic Reprint

Download or read book China During the War and Since the Peace Classic Reprint written by John Francis Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-26 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from China, During the War and Since the Peace The two portions of this work, though con secutive in point of time, and so far connected, are materially different in other respects. The first is, in fact, a Chinese History, founded on native documents not intended for our information; the second, the results of diplomatic transactions and personal ex perience during a four years' administration. A mass of Chinese official papers, captured or otherwise collected during the war, seemed, worthy of a better fate than to become the prey of worms, always peculiarly active in a hot climate. Dr. Gutzlaff, by my desire, fur nished a regular series of translations and ah stracts during the years 1844 and 1845. Book Strangers on the Western Front

Download or read book Strangers on the Western Front written by Guoqi Xu and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2011-02-28 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War I, Britain and France imported workers from their colonies to labor behind the front lines. The single largest group of support labor came not from imperial colonies, however, but from China. Xu Guoqi tells the remarkable story of the 140,000 Chinese men recruited for the Allied war effort. These laborers, mostly illiterate peasants from north China, came voluntarily and worked in Europe longer than any other group. Xu explores China’s reasons for sending its citizens to help the British and French (and, later, the Americans), the backgrounds of the workers, their difficult transit to Europe—across the Pacific, through Canada, and over the Atlantic—and their experiences with the Allied armies. It was the first encounter with Westerners for most of these Chinese peasants, and Xu also considers the story from their perspective: how they understood this distant war, the racism and suspicion they faced, and their attempts to hold on to their culture so far from home. In recovering this fascinating lost story, Xu highlights the Chinese contribution to World War I and illuminates the essential role these unsung laborers played in modern China’s search for a new national identity on the global stage.

Book New Life Currents in China Classic Reprint

Download or read book New Life Currents in China Classic Reprint written by Mary Ninde Gamewell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Life Currents in China The present hour is a crucial one in the history of China. Never has she faced such unparalleled Opportunities Or been confronted by graver perils. For a time her very life seemed to hang in the balance. But we believe the real crisis passed with the sudden ending of the European war, and that the changes sure to be brought about during this period Of world building will strengthen and make permanent the country's foundations. China is not like ancient Egypt, Whose greatness has departed though she still lives on. China is a vital force whose largest possibilities of develop ment lie before and not behind her. A new, fresh life is beginning to course through the nation's veins. How can this new life be fostered so there will not be the awful waste which has weakened China almost to the breaking point? The conservation of the physical, mental, mate rial, and, above all, the spiritual life of China and the Chinese people at this present time, - What a theme for our consideration! It will be seen that I have said but little, except indirectly, about the work being done in China by more than six thousand missionaries representing over one hundred mission boards of the British Empire, the United States, and Europe. Book Destined For War

Download or read book Destined For War written by Graham Allison and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER | NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR. From an eminent international security scholar, an urgent examination of the conditions that could produce a catastrophic conflict between the United States and China—and how it might be prevented. China and the United States are heading toward a war neither wants. The reason is Thucydides’s Trap: when a rising power threatens to displace a ruling one, violence is the likeliest result. Over the past five hundred years, these conditions have occurred sixteen times; war broke out in twelve. At the time of publication, an unstoppable China approached an immovable America, and both Xi Jinping and Donald Trump promised to make their countries “great again,” the seventeenth case was looking grim—it still is. A trade conflict, cyberattack, Korean crisis, or accident at sea could easily spark a major war. In Destined for War, eminent Harvard scholar Graham Allison masterfully blends history and current events to explain the timeless machinery of Thucydides’s Trap—and to explore the painful steps that might prevent disaster today. SHORT-LISTED FOR THE 2018 LIONEL GELBER PRIZE NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY: FINANCIAL TIMES * THE TIMES (LONDON)* AMAZON “Allison is one of the keenest observers of international affairs around.” — President Joe Biden “[A] must-read book in both Washington and Beijing.” — Boston Globe “[Full of] wide-ranging, erudite case studies that span human history . . . [A] fine book.”— New York Times Book Review
