Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Burmese Wars and Relations With Burma: Being an Abstract of Military and Political Operations, 1824-25-26, and 1852-53, With Various Local, Statistical, and Commercial Information, and a Summary of Events From 1826 to 1879, Including a Sketch of King Theebau's Priogress It seems almost superfluous to ask the attention of intelligent Britons to a region little known among them, but one, most assuredly, that has "a greater future before it than any country in Asia." Experience, however, has shown the necessity of so doing; for if we do not yet nearly realise the immense interests we possess in our old and "loved India" - the most splendid dominion under the sun - how is it to be expected we should do so in our comparatively new portion of Chin-India? That people often require to be reminded as well as informed, is another reason for the appearance of this volume, the greater portion of which is devoted to the operations of our Burmese Wars, and much of the remainder to the bright and hopeful effect. As regards the Military portion, the object of the present "Abstract" is two-fold. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Our Burmese Wars and Relations with Burm

Download or read book Our Burmese Wars and Relations with Burm written by W. F. B Laurie and published by . This book was released on 2005-05-01 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an updated expansion of the author s earlier memoir of the two Burmese Wars - in the second of which he served. Remarking that at the time of writing (1879) the general British population had little knowledge of their Empire s recently acquired Burmese domains, the author includes remarks and descriptions of the country and its customs as well as his purely military narrative. The first Burmese war, claims the author, was no aggressive conquest but a pre-emptive campaign fought to defend Bengal from Burmese invasion, while the British annexation of Burmese territory in the second war denied the fiends engaged in the Indian Mutiny of 1857 the opportunity of using Burma as a base.

Book excerpt: I t was the unanimous verdict of British and American historians that the Kings of Burma were arrogant barbarians, absolutely without any knowledge of diplomacy and diplomatie practice, whose foolish actions forced the British to annex the countr)'. Although the una nimity was broken in 1962 by Miss Dorothy Woodman in her brilliant work The Making 01 Burma, it still remains the majority verdict, and has even been re-affirmed. Mr. E. C. V. Foucar, who expressed his verdict in 1944 in They Reigned in Mandalay, confirmed it in 1963 in Mandalay the Golden. Professor John F. Cady, who fuHy agreed with the verdict in 1960 in A History 01 Modern Burma, has modified his opinion only with regard to the Second Anglo-Burmese War, in his recendy published work South-East Asia: fts Historical Development. The verdict is an ex parte one, because no consideration was given to the Burmese point ofview or to the Burmese sources ofhistory. More over, it was arrived at on false and fraudulent evidence. The British fought three wars against the Burmese during the period 1824-1886. For the First war, both the British and the Burmese must share the blame, and exeept for the great disparity in arms, it was a But after gaining two out of the three Burmese maritime fair fight.

Download or read book Making Enemies written by Mary Patricia Callahan and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Burmese army took political power in Burma in 1962 and has ruled the country ever since. The persistence of this government--even in the face of long-term nonviolent opposition led by activist Aung San Suu Kyi, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991--has puzzled scholars. In a book relevant to current debates about democratization, Mary P. Callahan seeks to explain the extraordinary durability of the Burmese military regime. In her view, the origins of army rule are to be found in the relationship between war and state formation.Burma's colonial past had seen a large imbalance between the military and civil sectors. That imbalance was accentuated soon after formal independence by one of the earliest and most persistent covert Cold War conflicts, involving CIA-funded Kuomintang incursions across the Burmese border into the People's Republic of China. Because this raised concerns in Rangoon about the possibility of a showdown with Communist China, the Burmese Army received even more autonomy and funding to protect the integrity of the new nation-state.The military transformed itself during the late 1940s and the 1950s from a group of anticolonial guerrilla bands into the professional force that seized power in 1962. The army edged out all other state and social institutions in the competition for national power. Making Enemies draws upon Callahan's interviews with former military officers and her archival work in Burmese libraries and halls of power. Callahan's unparalleled access allows her to correct existing explanations of Burmese authoritarianism and to supply new information about the coups of 1958 and 1962.

Book Conflict in Myanmar

Download or read book Conflict in Myanmar written by Nick Cheesman and published by ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Myanmar’s military adjusts to life with its former opponents holding elected office, Conflict in Myanmar showcases innovative research by a rising generation of scholars, analysts and practitioners about the past five years of political transformation. Each of its seventeen chapters, from participants in the 2015 Myanmar Update conference held at the Australian National University, builds on theoretically informed, evidence-based research to grapple with significant questions about ongoing violence and political contention. The authors offer a variety of fresh views on the most intractable and controversial aspects of Myanmar’s long-running civil wars, fractious politics and religious tensions. This latest volume in the Myanmar Update Series from the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific continues and deepens a tradition of intense, critical engagement with political, economic and social questions that matter to both the inhabitants and neighbours of one of Southeast Asia’s most complicated and fascinating countries.
