Book Our Bishops and Deans Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Our Bishops and Deans Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by F. Arnold and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Bishops and Deans, Vol. 1 of 2 It seems to me that of the three orders of the Church - Bishops, Priests and Deacons - the great body of the priesthood or presbytery is in an eminently sound condition, and efficiently doing its great work, but that both in the diaconate and episcopate, the Church suffers harm and loss. At present the deacon's office is practi cally divided only by a line from the priesthood, and one great want of our day is the restoration of the lay diaconates, as the best way of coping with the necessities of the time. On the other hand, we have almost lost sight of the original idea of the Episcopate, the actual overseeing by a chief pastor, of the clergy and their flocks. We have substituted for the Primitive Catholic idea an abnormal exaggeration, that of the baronial mediaeval prelate. A very large increase of the Episcopate - in which rank and income shall be regarded as quite secondary to the extension of the office - and a large extension of the diaconate, so that it shall not be simply a clerical diaconate, appear to be necessary to carry out the idea of a National Church, and to meet the national wants. I venture to think also that a large Ecclesiastical Reform Act, dealing with the practical evils of the Church, will be necessary if we are to avoid an ecclesiastical revolution. Although this may be considered as a faithful re-print, it will be found that many, both of Gale's and Lord Clarendon's inaccuracies have been corrected. Book Life of James Green Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Life of James Green Vol 1 of 2 written by Augustus Theodore Wirgman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of James Green, Vol. 1 of 2: Doctor of Divinity, Before and Dean of Maritzburg, Natal From February, 1849, to January, 1906 The life of Dr. James Green, in its external and ecclesiastical aspect, is interwoven with the history of the Church of the Province of South Africa from its founding to the present day. His striking personality and the force of his character, informed as it was with profound learning as a theologian and canonist, would have left a deep impress upon whatever portion of the Catholic Church his life work had enriched. Had he remained in England, he would have been numbered with such veterans of the Tractarian epoch as Dean Randall, Archdeacon Denison and George Rundle Prynne. These men led the van of the Catholic movement, and moved with it, instead of being left behind as some of their contemporaries were, when the movement ceased to be academic, and became the mainspring of the practical and devotional energies of the renewed and transformed life of the "Ecclesia Anglicana." But he was given to South Africa; and the work he was there called upon to do, as a leader, an organiser, and a champion of the Faith reacted upon the Mother Church and upon the Anglican Communion as a whole. To most Churchmen who know South African Church history his name stands prominently forward on one great occasion. They know Dean Green as the protagonist in the Colenso controversy with its wide and far-reaching issues.
