Download or read book Our Army on the Rio Grande written by T. B. Thorpe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Army on the Rio Grande: Being a Short Account of the Important Events Transpiring From the Time of the Removal of the "Army of Occupation" From Corpus Christi, to the Surrender of Matamoros The events treated of in this work, are of too recent occurrence, and of an interest too absorbing, to require a preface. The author was among those who were deeply excited by the stirring incidents connected with our little army on the Rio Grande, in the months of April and May, 1846, and he was on the battle fields, and among the heroes, almost immediately after the occurrences that have rendered them immortal in the history of the country. The idea of writing the following little volume, was suggested by the accumulation of materials, collected for the transient purpose of varying the columns of a daily paper, and urged on by the honorable wish to record some of the noble deeds of our soldiers, that might otherwise be forgotten. The author is indebted to several officers of high standing in the army for facilities of obtaining information, among whom he would mention, in the most respectful terms, Major Gen. Gaines and Gen. Worth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, Clotilde P. Garcia Tejano Book Prize The opening campaign of the US-Mexican War transformed the map of each nation and shaped the course of conflict. Armed with a broad range of Mexican military documents and previously unknown US sources, Douglas Murphy provides the first balanced view of early battles such as Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma. He reassesses previously covered territory and also poses new questions. Why did Mexico establish its defenses south of the Rio Grande while claiming territory north of the river? What was Mexico’s strategy in the campaign against the United States? What factors most affected Mexico’s defeat? In confronting these questions, Murphy shows that the campaign was a complex chess match with undercurrents of political intrigue, economic motivations, and personal animosities as much as military action. Two Armies on the Rio Grande will transform our understanding of the US-Mexican War.

Book Racial Borders

Download or read book Racial Borders written by James N. Leiker and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Civil War ended, hundreds of African Americans enlisted in the U.S. Army to gain social mobility and regular pay. These black soldiers protected white communities, forced Native Americans onto government reservations, patrolled the Mexican border, and broke up labor disputes in mining areas. Despised by the white settlers they protected, many black soldiers were sent to posts along the Texas-Mexico border. The interactions there among blacks, whites, and Hispanics during the period leading up to World War I offer Leiker the opportunity to study the opportunity to study the complicated, even paradoxical nature of American race relations.

Book The Old Army in the Big Bend of Texas

Download or read book The Old Army in the Big Bend of Texas written by Thomas T. Smith and published by Texas State Historical Assn. This book was released on 2018 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even before Pancho Villa's 1916 raid on Columbus, New Mexico, and the following punitive expedition under General John J. Pershing, the U.S. Army was strengthening its presence on the southwestern border in response to the Mexican Revolution of 1910. Manning forty-one small outposts along a three-hundred mile stretch of the Rio Grande region, the army remained for a decade, rotating eighteen different regiments, primarily cavalry, until the return of relative calm. The remote, rugged, and desolate terrain of the Big Bend defied even the technological advances of World War I, and it remained very much a cavalry and pack mule operation until the outposts were finally withdrawn in 1921. With The Old Army in the Big Bend of Texas: The Last Cavalry Frontier, 1911-1921, Thomas T. "Ty" Smith, one of Texas's leading military historians, has delved deep into the records of the U.S. Army to provide an authoritative portrait, richly complemented by many photos published here for the first time, of the final era of soldiers on horseback in the American West.
