Before that, British North America was made up of a few provinces, the vast area of Rupert's Land (privately owned by the Hudson's Bay Company), and the North-Western Territory. By 1864, many leaders felt it would be good to join into one country. These leaders met and wrote a constitution for the new country, which had to be passed by the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Once passed, it became known as the British North America Act which brought together the three provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Canada (which became the provinces of Ontario and Quebec). Manitoba and the Northwest Territories joined in 1870, British Columbia in 1871, Prince Edward Island in 1873, Yukon Territory in 1898, Alberta and Saskatchewan in 1905, Newfoundland and Labrador not until 1949, and Nunavut separated from the Northwest Territories as its own unit in 1999. In the 1890s, when Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier spoke of making Ottawa a "Washington of the North," he wanted a new architectural style for the Capital that was distinct from American and older British models, in pursuit of grandeur. In 1982, the Queen and the Right Honourable Pierre Trudeau, Prime Minister, signed the Constitution Act, 1982 to make Canada an independent nation. The Heritage Building is today part of Ottawa City Hall. It was originally built in 1874 as Ottawa Normal School and served as a teacher's college. The Gothic Revival building stands at Elgin and Lisgar Streets; several extensions were added to the rear of the building. In the 1960s the Ontario's teachers' colleges were merged into universities and this one was merged into the Faculty of Education of the University of Ottawa in 1974.

Throughout its history it has been a market for farmers in the Ottawa region and associated with wholesale and retail purchase of natural products and trade of manufactured goods and supplies. It has provided the services and sometimes the industrial support to consolidate the markets role as the center of Ottawa commerce. The heart of the market is characterized by low profile buildings typical of the nineteenth century interspersed with succeeding commercial development until the 1970s. Its development pattern is extremely dense, covering full and sometimes multiple lots in many areas. Much of the land has been developed and redeveloped to provide services and support to its vital commerce. Secondary space in this area has traditionally been used for a variety of residential, storage and office facilities. In form, the architecture is diverse and layered, having been renovated, renewed and reformed frequently to adjust to changing commercial needs and priorities. Lowertown West comprises the City's oldest residential area. It was the civilian center of Ottawa from the British survey of the town site in 1826 until the turn of the 20th century. From about 1890 to the mid-1970s growth occurred in other areas of the city at the expense of Lowertown and much of the urban fabric east of King Edward and north of Boteler was demolished during urban renewal. The Lowertown West Heritage Conservation District encompasses the area of Lowertown west of King Edward Avenue and east of Sussex Avenue between Bolton and St. Patrick Streets. In this book, buildings on Guigues, Parent and St. Patrick Streets are included. Lowertown includes early institutional buildings, including the Basilica and the Elizabeth Bruyere Centre, and a rich collection of residential buildings that demonstrate the early history of Lowertown and its gradual evolution. This evolution is a crucial characteristic of the area, and it recognizes the heritage value of buildings constructed over a long period of time. The history of Lowertown West is also the history of generations of Ottawa's working people, both French and English speaking, and the physical record of that social history, represented by both the institutions and the residential buildings, is a major cultural resource for the City of Ottawa."

Settler John Binning arrived in 1857 and was the first to create a permanent residence in the area. The community was originally named Mapleton, but the name was changed when a post office was established. The new name was chosen by a government official and refers to Listowel, Ireland (a market town in County Kerry situated on the River Feale, 28 kilometres, or 17 miles, from the county town, Tralee.) The majority of early settlers were of Protestant Irish origin. In 1907, hydroelectric and telephone services came to the town with the Princess cinema. During World War II the theatre was renamed the Capitol and remains Canada's oldest operating cinema. In 1871 the Wellington, Grey and Bruce Railway extended its line to Listowel. It was joined in 1873 by a second railway, the Stratford and Huron Railway, and Listowel became an important shipping point. The population doubled when industries, including a woolen mill, a sawmill, a planing mill and a tannery, were established. In 1891 the Morris, Field, Rogers Company Ltd began to manufacture Morris pianos in Listowel. The Campbell Soup Company was a major local employer for 48 years, operating a frozen, foodservice and specialty food plant in Listowel. The factory closed in April 2008. The surrounding area is mostly agricultural land located on the Perth Plain, dominated by the beef and pork industries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guelph, known as "The Royal City, is located 100 kilometers (62 miles) west of downtown Toronto at the intersection of Highways 6 and 7. Guelph was founded on St. George's Day, April 23, 1827, the feast day of the patron saint of England. The town was named to honour Britain's royal family, the Hanoverians who were descended from the Guelfs, the ancestral family of George IV, the reigning British monarch. John Galt designed the town to resemble a European city centre with squares, broad main streets and narrow side streets, resulting in a variety of block sizes and shapes. The street plan was designed to resemble a lady's fan with many of the streets forming triangles (the segments of the fan). The first cable TV system began in Guelph with their first broadcast being the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The Speed and Eramosa Rivers flow through the city. Riverside Park is an 80-acre park built around a portion of the Speed River that runs through Guelph. The park opened in 1905. Our family lived in Guelph from the time I was four years old until 1969. Guelph was an often returned to place for our family from 1948 to 1954; whenever Dad was out of work, he would head back to Guelph where Mom's cousin and husband, Rosa and Carl Saillian, lived and had their Armenian Rug cleaning and installation business. We often watched Uncle Carl shampooing carpets in the large garage beside their house on Stevenson Street. One year when Dad was out of work, Dad dug out the basement under the Saillian's home to make a recreation room; Dad was a hard worker and completed the work much quicker than they expected. I attended S.S. No. 1 School from 1957 to 1963, and then I was shuffled around to a few schools to complete Grades 7 and 8. I went to John F. Ross C.V.I. for high school. Riverside Park was a place we often visited for picnics and swimming. We lived across the road from the Ontario Reformatory (O.R.) grounds and we often saw a prison guard with a group of prisoners keeping the lawns looking beautiful. Since the reformatory moved to Milton, the grounds are in poor shape with animals digging tunnels through the grass. We swam in the lake at the O.R. I have many happy memories of growing up in this city. The Ontario Agricultural College, the oldest part of the University of Guelph, began in 1873 as an associate agricultural college of the University of Toronto. The Government of Ontario purchased 550 acres of land from F. W. Stone to build the college. In 1964, the Ontario Agricultural College, Ontario Veterinary College and Macdonald Institute combined to become the University of Guelph and Wellington College. Moffat Moffat is located north of the 401, southeast of Guelph. We lived in Moffat from the fall of 1954 to the spring of 1956. Moffat was a small village with farms and a few homes on two side streets, a post office, general store, and a school. We moved from Moffat to the outskirts of Guelph on Old York Road across from the Ontario Reformatory grounds. When the boundary of Guelph extended eastward, the name of our road became Beaumont Crescent and our house number was 18.
