Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jorge Oteiza was one of the principal artists and art theorists of the twentieth century. The radical deconstructionism of his formal "disoccupations" of space, considered by many a precursor of minimalism, won his the 1957 Grand International Prize for Sculpture at the Sao Paolo Biennial, the most coveted prize for a sculptor at the time. Soon afterward, however, he concluded, "I no longer need my statues. I am no longer a sculptor." Oteiza then staged a second career as influential as the first, as an art theorist, urbanist, architech, and cultural agitator, turning into a sharmanic and controversial figure. His relentless aesthetic education of the Basques laid the culture groundwork for the building of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. A precursor of "the end of art" and the ethnographic turn, Oteiza has been heralded by Frank Gehry and Richard Serra as one of the fundamental artists of our time. He is now being honored by a series of international exhibits.

Edited and translated from the Spanish by Forrest Gander. The poets featured in this volume are Antonio Gamoneda, Olvido García Valdés, Miguel Casado, Marcos Canteli, Sandra Santana, Benito del Pliego, Julia Piera, Ana Gorría, Pilar Fraile Amador, and Esther Ramón. "This anthology charts some of my own enthusiasms; it isn't a comprehensive list. It seems more significant to represent ten substantial writers with a generous selection of poems than thirty or forty writers with one or two poems apiece. The ten poets collected here represent one of many possible configurations of an exploratory surge that signals a moment of change in Spain's literature."—Forrest Gander, from the Translator's Note

Book Behind Architectural Filters

Download or read book Behind Architectural Filters written by Miguel Guitart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-25 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind Architectural Filters: Phenomena of Interference explores the active role of architectural filters in generating physically and sensory charged spatial experiences. The book addresses how the material and the psychological strategies of permeable physical boundaries determine our perceptual experiences of the spaces we occupy. This book explores architectural filters as connecting mechanisms capable of conjuring unique atmospheres that integrate the participation of several agents. The text analyzes ten case studies, grouped under five generative parameters: origin, density, thickness, function, and message. Each study investigates the main aspects of the filters’ internal genesis and the character of the spaces informed by them. The cases illustrate a broad geographic, cultural, and historical scope, and connect past tradition with contemporary design. This methodology considers a historical and philosophical standpoint addressing vernacular, constructive, sustainable, and sensory considerations. Written for students and scholars of architectural history, theory, art, design, and philosophy, Behind Architectural Filters: Phenomena of Interference offers an unprecedented perspective on the production of spatial atmospheres, bridging past and present while connecting thought and practice in a highly visual study. Chapter 3 of this book is available for free in PDF format as Open Access from the individual product page at www.routledge.com. Book Research Based Practices for Teaching Common Core Literacy

Download or read book Research Based Practices for Teaching Common Core Literacy written by P. David Pearson and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This one-of-a-kind resource will be invaluable to every teacher educator, every curriculum director, and every literacy coach, whether or not they must meet Common Core Standards. Bringing together perspectives from literacy luminaries, each addressing their specialty, this book offers an accessible fund of rich practices in literacy instruction. The book serves two purposes: First, it assembles a body of knowledge and wisdom from leading literacy researchers who each draw from a long career in the field to address topics of central importance to good literacy instruction. Second, these research-to-practice leaders connect established best practices and foundational research to the current challenge of instruction to meet Common Core Standards and other rigorous curriculum guidelines. The contributors point out strengths of the Common Core as well as issues and oversights that educators should be aware of. Closing chapters situate the Common Core within a continuum of educational policy and legislation. Contributors: Richard L. Allington, Monica T. Billen, Jay S. Blanchard, Robert Calfee, Gina N. Cervetti, Michael F. Graves, John T. Guthrie, Elfrieda H. Hiebert, James V. Hoffman, Rosalind Horowitz, Michael L. Kamil, Barbara Kapinus, Richard Long, Leigh Ann Martin, Kimberly McCuiston, James Nageldinger, David Paige, P. David Pearson, Timothy Rasinski, S. Jay Samuels, Barbara Taylor, Joanna P. Williams, Kathleen Wilson “Pearson and Hiebert have long advocated for children in schools, and this volume is no exception. They and their chapter authors situate the CCSS within the historical and policy context in which it was written and support the literacy education community as we wrestle with the implications the standards have for research, for teachers, for teaching, and for learning.” —Sharon Walpole, University of Delaware “This book gets way beyond generalities and polemics about the Common Core, taking a deep and measured dive into a wide range of essential topics within the standards. I read a lot, and I can't think of the last time I read anything about the CCSS as engaging and thought provoking as this.” —Nell K. Duke, University of Michigan

Book Gender Representation in Learning Materials

Download or read book Gender Representation in Learning Materials written by Abolaji S. Mustapha and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representations of gender in learning materials convey an implicit message to students about attitudes towards culturally appropriate gender roles for women and men. This collection takes a linguistic approach to exploring theories about gender representation within the sphere of education and textbooks, and their effects on readers and students within an international context. In the opening section, contributors discuss theories of representation and effect, challenging the conventional Althusserian model of interpellation, and acknowledging the challenges of applying Western feminist models within an international context. Following chapters provide detailed analyses focusing on a number of different countries: Australia, Japan, Brazil, Finland, Russia, Hong Kong, Nigeria, Germany, Qatar, Tanzania, and Poland. Through linguistic analysis of vocabulary associated with women and men, content analysis of what women and men say in textbooks, and discourse analysis of the types of linguistic moves associated with women and men, contributors evaluate the extent to which gendered representations in textbooks perpetuate stereotypical gender roles, what the impact may be on learners, and the ways that both teachers and learners interact and engage with these texts.

Book Ensuring Quality to Gain Access to Global Markets

Download or read book Ensuring Quality to Gain Access to Global Markets written by Martin Kellermann and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a modern world with rapidly growing international trade, countries compete less based on the availability of natural resources, geographical advantages, and lower labor costs and more on factors related to firms' ability to enter and compete in new markets. One such factor is the ability to demonstrate the quality and safety of goods and services expected by consumers and confirm compliance with international standards. To assure such compliance, a sound quality infrastructure (QI) ecosystem is essential. Jointly developed by the World Bank Group and the National Metrology Institute of Germany, this guide is designed to help development partners and governments analyze a country's quality infrastructure ecosystems and provide recommendations to design and implement reforms and enhance the capacity of their QI institutions.
