Book The UK Nigeria Remittance Corridor

Download or read book The UK Nigeria Remittance Corridor written by Raúl Hernández-Coss and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is the first research work on remittances conducted in Nigeria and reveals the actual state of its remittance market. The report describes how United Kingdom residents of Nigerian origin transfer remittances home and how the funds are distributed to their beneficiaries in Nigeria. The review presents the remittance industry conditions existing in the UKNigeria remittance corridor at the origination and distribution stages of the transactions, and the intermediaries who facilitate the transfers. The report makes conclusions and compares these main findings with lessons from other corridors. The UK-Nigeria remittance corridor has an equal dominance of formal and informal remittance intermediaries. Although several formal financial institutions for transferring money exist in the UK, many people choose to send money informally. More collaboration between the UK and Nigeria is necessary to develop the remittance market, to encourage the use of formal channels, and to enhance the development potential. Among its benefits, the remittance country partnership (RCP) between UK and Nigeria aims to reduce the cost of remittance transfers. The Nigerian government is engaging its diaspora to help spur economic growth. This report recommends that each government focus on improving data collection at its end of the corridor and do more research to provide its policymakers and its private sector with accurate information.

Book The Military Effectiveness of Post Colonial States

Download or read book The Military Effectiveness of Post Colonial States written by Pradeep Barua and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current military historiography has a tendency to portray the military effectiveness of non-western, post-colonial states in broad generalized stereotypes. This monograph examines the militaries of Nigeria, Argentina, Egypt and India in times of crisis to challenge these assumptions. The book shows that despite having broad similarities, each of these states had unique characteristics that impacted their military effectiveness in different ways. These key variables included the military institutions’ maturity and skill sets, the availability and management of human and material resources, and the quality of both civil and military leadership.

Book The U S Mexico Remittance Corridor

Download or read book The U S Mexico Remittance Corridor written by Raúl Hernández-Coss and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2005 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experience of Mexican nationals who send money home from the United States forms the basis for this study. The authors identify three stages of the remittance process: the First Mile, when decisions are in the hands of the remittance sender; the Intermediary Stage, comprising systems that facilitate the cross-border transfer of funds; and the Last Mile, where the funds reach the hands of the remittance recipient. This analysis, covering the last eight years, may provide guidance for other remittance sending and receiving countries that seek to encourage formalization of the flow.

Book International Labour Migration

Download or read book International Labour Migration written by D. Bartram and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-05-11 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of international labour migration typically assume that foreign labour is a universal feature of wealthy economies. Exploitation of foreign workers can contribute significantly to employers' profits. However, some wealthy societies do not import workers on a large scale, despite employers' pressures. Using Israel and Japan as empirical cases, this comparative-historical work investigates why some governments allow employers relatively free access to foreign labour, while others require alternative responses to labour shortages. A focus on variation leads to an innovative and insightful argument to explain international labour migration.

Book Counting on the Latino Vote

Download or read book Counting on the Latino Vote written by Louis DeSipio and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latinos, along with other new immigrants, are not being incorporated into U.S. politics as rapidly as their predecessors, raising concerns about political fragmentation along ethnic lines. In Counting on the Latino Vote, Louis DeSipio uses the first national studies of Latinos to investigate whether they engage in bloc voting or are likely to do so in the future. To understand American racial and ethnic minority group politics, social scientists have largely relied on a black-white paradigm. DeSipio gives a more complex picture by drawing both on the histories of other ethnic groups and on up-to-date but underutilized studies of Hispanics' political attitudes, values, and behaviors. In order to explore the potential impact of Hispanics as an electorate, he analyzes the current Latino body politic and projects the possible voting patterns of those who reside in the United States but do not now vote.

Book excerpt: "Describes fully for the first time the aviation aspects of the Nigerian Civil War, Biafra's motley mix of antiquated and modern aircraft was acquired through various dubious and clandestine channels. They faced the Nigerian Air Force. Largely Soviet-supplied and mercenary7-crewed MiG-17s. L-29 Delfins and Hyushin II-28s. Despite being lan-locked for most of the war Biafra held out, its only link to the outside world being an air bridge to a converted bush airstrip deep in the Biafran heartland. The strip supported an amazxing airlift of arms and food--the largest civilian relief airlift in history--which, for almost 18 months kept a nation alive. A special section traces the intgiguing web of British aircraft dealers trying to sell aircraft to the Biafran government--expressly against the wishes of Whitehall."--Dust cover
