Book Post Soviet Conflicts

Download or read book Post Soviet Conflicts written by Ali Askerov and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-10-07 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 30 years since the emergence of the post-Soviet conflicts things have both changed and remained the same – continuities and changes in post-Soviet conflicts are the primary themes of this volume – it addresses all major wars, civil wars, and rebellions in the former Soviet Union. The volume focuses on factors that have contributed or may contribute to the resolution of the post-Soviet conflicts, most of which have represented rather long and damaging crises. In all conflict cases Moscow has been guided by Russian state interests – some have been instigated or fueled, others driven to a frozen state, and still a couple of others have been constructively resolved due to Moscow’s intervention. Russia has used a long-term strategy for the resolution of those conflicts that have taken place on its soil, but in regards to the conflicts in other post-Soviet states, there is no long-term solution in sight. As such, the conflicts in Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, and Nagorniy Karabakh, remain unresolved involving not only the named states, but Russia as well. They may represent localized national or regional crisis impacting only the states involved, but for the Russian Federation they epitomize one huge post-Soviet crisis with no obvious end.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The OSCE Yearbook 2011 opens with Marc Perrin de Brichambaut's reminiscences on his six years as OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) Secretary General. This is followed by evaluations of Kazakhstan's OSCE Chairmanship and the Corfu Process. The special focus topic of the OSCE Yearbook 2011 is one of the OSCE's most successful institutions: The Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), which celebrated its 20th jubilee in 2011. More than 20 experts and practitioners describe ODIHR's roles and tasks and contribute to the debate on various topics, including human rights protection, gender equality, Roma and Sinti issues, election observation, and the independence of the judiciary in Central Asia and the Caucasus. In a chapter on developments in OSCE States, the book's contributors consider the engagement of the United States in the OSCE framework, human rights in Tajikistan, and domestic developments in Belarus. Activities in the areas of conflict prevention and peacebuilding are discussed with reference to the OSCE field operations in Kosovo, Moldova, and Armenia. There is a consideration of whether the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh is in danger of reigniting. Other current topics include the effect of the Arab Spring on cooperation between the OSCE and its Mediterranean Partners, Japan's policy towards Central Asia, and the future of confidence-building measures. The Yearbook includes compendious appendixes with data and facts on the 56 OSCE States, as well as a full bibliography of recent publications. (Series: OSCE Yearbook - Vol. 17)

This book was released on 2017-04-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The OSCE Yearbook 2016 documents the "turbulent times" (Frank-Walter Steinmeier) in which Germany assumed the chairmanship of the OSCE in 2016. Leading academics and experienced OSCE practitioners analyse and report on significant events and developments in the OSCE and its 57 participating states over the past twelve months, and comment on the state of European security as a whole. Marcel Peko, the director of the OSCE Conflict Prevention Centre, opens this year's yearbook by outlining new approaches to resolving the Ukraine crisis, which remains a central concern; he is joined by the project coordinator in Ukraine, who discusses his work. Experts also outline the key features of a future security strategy for the OSCE, comment on the revival of conventional arms control as a priority of the German chairmanship and discuss the organization's future role in conflict management. The OSCE Yearbook draws lessons for successful conflict resolution from a report on the peace process in Northern Ireland. In this year's special focus section on "Migration and Refugees in the OSCE Area", international experts and prominent OSCE representatives consider the crisis of European refugee and migration policy, the OSCE's potential future contribution to migration management, and the organization and its institutions' reaction so far to the challenges of the refugee crisis. Other contributions provide an insight into the United Kingdom's approach to cooperative security in the year of the Brexit vote and some of its domestic consequences, the four-day war in Nagorno-Karabakh, the possibility of OSCE peacekeeping, the history of the OSCE's economic and environmental dimensions, and China's relations with the Central Asian states. A heartfelt plea for the OSCE to be granted a long-overdue legal personality completes the yearbook's broad spectrum of topics. The OSCE Yearbook includes extensive annexes containing facts and figures on its participating states, a list of recent events and a selected current bibliography.

Book Osce Yearbook 2003

Download or read book Osce Yearbook 2003 written by and published by Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft Mbh & Company. This book was released on 2004-09-15 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) plays an indispensable role in creating and maintaining peace, security and stability in Europe. With the ongoing enlargement of NATO and the EU, however, what sort of future will the OSCE have? This is the central question considered in the OSCE Yearbook 2003. As well as the OSCEís classical tasks of conflict prevention, democratization and the promotion of human rights, the latest volume in the series also turns its attention to the Organizationís role in combating terrorism, its contribution to security-sector reform, its growing involvement in environmental issues, and its commitment to freedom of the media. Further contributions take as their topics "political Islam", and organized crime, including the disastrous consequences of the latterís implication in active and frozen conflicts. The Yearbook includes extensive annexes with documents on the OSCE and data and on the Organizationís 55 participating States, and a selected current bibliography.
