De acordo com os autores, estaríamos às portas de uma gigantesca síntese conceitual a ser promovida pela ciência entre os conceitos de Mente e Corpo (Matéria), o que deve nos levar a reflexões sobre a condição humana e nossas concepções gerais de natureza e cultura e também deve nos levar a repensar as bases filosóficas, metafísicas, epistemológicas e metodológicas da nossa produção científica. A tese defendida por Marin e Amaral é que a ciência moderna tende a direcionar o conjunto de suas produções teóricas no sentido de promover gigantescos processos de sínteses conceituais, que parecem irremediavelmente destinados a entrar em choque com a cultura/visão de mundo existente na época em que eles são propostos. De acordo com o modo como os autores recontam a história da ciência moderna, dos primeiros dias, com a revolução copernicana, até o presente momento, passamos por dois grandes choques entre o discurso teórico dos cientistas e a cultura/visão de mundo estabelecida: a unificação conceitual newtoniana e a darwiniana. A primeira grande unificação conceitual promovida pela ciência moderna foi operada por Isaac Newton no século XVII através da teoria da gravitação universal, que postulou as leis físicas que permitiram uma abordagem unificada entre Céu e Terra; a segunda grande unificação foi aquela operada por Charles Darwin, dois séculos mais tarde, através da teoria da evolução das espécies por seleção natural, abordagem teórica que promoveu uma síntese entre os conceitos de vida humana e vida não-humana ao considerar que ambos os tipos de vida possuem a mesma base biológica. A base desta terceira unificação, i.e., aquela que apresenta a visão neurocientífica da unidade corpo-mente, vem sendo pacientemente construída, nas últimas décadas, com sólido apoio em dados empíricos fornecidos pelos avanços das ciências biológicas e comportamentais. Para analisar o impacto da terceira unificação na cultura/visão de mundo contemporânea bem como sua relação com questões filosóficas antigas e profundas, os autores lançam mão ao longo do livro da metáfora da “trava cartesiana”. Ainda no alvorecer da modernidade filosófica, Descartes instalou uma espécie de trava de segurança no mecanicismo que se consistia na ideia de que toda a natureza pode e deve ser explicada recorrendo-se a causas mecânicas, exceto a alma humana, uma vez que esta é livre. O choque e as previsíveis reações ao que os autores denominam de terceira grande unificação conceitual residem no fato de que a ciência contemporânea adentrou a caixa craniana humana e está, definitivamente, diante da trava cartesiana. E pretende desmontá-la. Neste conturbado cenário contemporâneo, o pensamento científico deverá se voltar para seus fundamentos filosóficos. Este é o convite dos autores. Um convite a pensar os desafios da ciência no século XXI a partir da relação entre a produção teórica científica e o pensamento filosófico.

A large number of countries are now incorporating science, technology and innovation in their national development agenda, in order to make their economies less reliant on raw materials and more rooted in knowledge. Most research and development (R&D) is taking place in high-income countries, but innovation of some kind is now occurring across the full spectrum of income levels according to the first survey of manufacturing companies in 65 countries conducted by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics and summarized in this report. For many lower-income countries, sustainable development has become an integral part of their national development plans for the next 10–20 years. Among higher-income countries, a firm commitment to sustainable development is often coupled with the desire to maintain competitiveness in global markets that are increasingly leaning towards ‘green’ technologies. The quest for clean energy and greater energy efficiency now figures among the research priorities of numerous countries. Written by more than 50 experts who are each covering the country or region from which they hail, the UNESCO Science Report: towards 2030 provides more country-level information than ever before.
