Book excerpt: Demineralization of enamel has been one of the iatrogenic effects of fixed orthodontic therapy, for which various authors have suggested the use of fluoride to reduce the decalcification and development of white spot lesion. In the present study, the shear bond strength of light-cure composite adhesive, self-cure composite adhesive, light-cure glass ionomer cement and acidic primer were tested at the end of 24 hours after bonding. The results proved that the acidic primer system had highest shear bond strength while Light-cure glass ionomer system had the least shear bond strength. But the mean values met the minimal shear bond strength required for orthodontic bonding. After bond failure, least amount of glass ionomer cement was present on the enamel surface, followed by acidic primer system, light-cure composite and self-cure composite system. So, it is advantageous to use light-cure glass ionomer cement for bonding in terms of less amount of time spent and no enamel damage during cleaning procedure after debonding.

Book excerpt: Objective: To compare the mean bond strengths and mode of bond failure, in vitro, of five bonding systems (MIP 1, Plastic Conditioner 2, Assure 2, Scotchbond 3, and Transbond XT 1), when bonding an orthodontic bracket to an artificially-aged composite resin restoration, with and without mechanical surface preparation with a diamond bur. Methods: Class V buccal composite resin restorations were prepared in 240 upper right central incisor dentoform teeth. The restorations were artificially age d for 35 days, bonded with metal brackets, stored in distilled water at 37°C for 30 days, thermocycled for 500 cycles, and subsequently debonded with an Instron universal testing machine. Results: The mean bond strengths for Transbond, MIP, Plastic Conditioner, Assure, and Scotchbond groups were 12.1, 12.3, 13.3, 17.2, and 17.7 MPa respectively. The mean bond strengths for Transbond+Diamond, MIP+Diamond, Plastic Conditioner+Diamond, Assure+Diamond, and Scotchbond+Diamond groups were 18.5, 16.4, 19.1, 19.5, and 20.7 MPa respectively. ANOVA revealed a statistically significant diffe rence (P d"0.05) among the groups. Conclusions: Mechanically roughening the surface of a composite resin restoration with a diamond bur, provided significantly greater bond strengths, regardless of the bonding resin used. However, Assure and Scotchbond, without diamond bur preparation, provided similar bond strengths to Transbond, MIP and Plastic Conditioner, with diamond bur preparation. 1. 3M Unitek, Monrovia CA 2. Book excerpt: All specimens were subjected to shear forces by a universal testing machine after 24hrs at a cross head speed of 1mm/min. Data were analyzed with Kruskal Wallis and Wilcoxon test to compare groups (¿=0.05). Results: Results showed SBS of RelyX Ultimate to be significantly greater than the 3 self-adhesive resin cements on both enamel and dentin in the dual cure mode as well as on enamel in the self-cure mode. However, Panavia SA and Speedcem were significantly greater than Rely X Ultimate in the self-cure mode on dentin. Dual cure activator improved the shear bond strength of RelyX Ultimate in the self-cure mode and no significant differences were found between the bond strengths of self-adhesive resin cements and RelyX Ultimate on dentin in the self-cure mode. Conclusions: For dentin, self-adhesive resin cements Panavia SA and Speedcem had better bond strength compared to RelyX Ultimate in the absence of light polymerization and therefore may be considered in cementing restorations such as zirconia and metal, where light transmission may be limited.

Book excerpt: Despite its limitation in terms of surface covered area, the PLD technique still gathers interest among researchers by offering endless possibilities for tuning thin film composition and enhancing their properties of interest due to: (i) the easiness of a stoichiometric transfer even for very complex target materials, (ii) high adherence of the deposited structures to the substrate, (iii) controlled degree of phase, crystallinity, and thickness of deposited coatings, (iv) versatility of the experimental set-up which allows for simultaneous ablation of multiple targets resulting in combinatorial maps or consecutive ablation of multiple targets producing multi-layered structures, and (v) adjustment of the number of laser pulses, resulting in either a spread of nanoparticles, islands of materials or a complete covering of a surface. Moreover, a variation of PLD, known as Matrix Assisted Pulsed Laser Evaporation, allows for deposition of organic materials, ranging from polymers to proteins and even living cells, otherwise difficult to transfer unaltered in the form of thin films by other techniques. Furthermore, the use of laser light as transfer agent ensures purity of films and pulse-to-pulse deposition allows for an unprecedented control of film thickness at the nm level. This Special Issue is a collection of state-of-the art research papers and reviews in which the topics of interest are devoted to thin film synthesis by PLD and MAPLE, for numerous research and industry field applications, such as bio-active coatings for medical implants and hard, protective coatings for cutting and drilling tools withstanding high friction and elevated temperatures, sensors, solar cells, lithography, magnetic devices, energy-storage and conversion devices, controlled drug delivery and in situ microstructuring for boosting of surface properties.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the current study was to develop a bonding method that can achieve clinically acceptable bond strength values while leaving a minimum amount of adhesive on the tooth surface during the debonding process. One hundred teeth were randomly assigned into groups. Five different enamel surface preparation protocols were tested (N = 20, each): Conventional acid etch, standard SEP, SEP applied with a light brush stroke (altered SEP 1), SEP applied directly to the composite of pre-coated bracket (altered SEP 2), and Primer Only groups. Brackets were debonded using an Instron universal testing machine (Instron, Canton, MA) in shear mode and the mean shear bond strength values were calculated. In addition, enamel surfaces were examined under light microscope to determine the location of failure using ARI. The Primer Only group had significantly lower mean shear strength (0.14 MPa, P0.05) than the conventional acid etch (13.81 MPa), standard SEP (12.10 MPa), altered SEP 1 (10.80 MPa), and altered SEP 2 (11.48 MPa) groups. The conventional acid etch, standard SEP, altered SEP 1 and altered SEP 2 groups were not significantly different from each other (p0.05). With respect to ARI values, there was a significant difference among these four groups. 85% of samples in the altered SEP 2 group had 10% or less composite resin left on their surfaces. This group had also a mean shear bond strength value of 11.43 MPa, significantly above the minimal strength needed for orthodontic attachment bonding, and the lowest ARI values overall. Therefore, application of SEP directly to the composite resin of the pre-coated brackets may be an ideal bonding method by providing adequate bond strength and leaving a minimum amount of composite resin on the tooth surface during debonding. It should be kept in mind that future in-vivo studies would be needed to confirm the findings obtained from the current in-vitro study.
