Book Orphic Hymns Grimoire

Download or read book Orphic Hymns Grimoire written by Sara Mastros and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orpheus, the famed oracle orator hero of Greece, began to teach a new religion at the dawn of the Archaic Age. Deeply rooted in ancient paganism, Orphism taught a doctrine of peace-seeking, reincarnation, and universal brotherhood. The followers, like their leader, worshiped their gods with song. Eighty seven of these ancient hymns have survived to the present day, and are called The Orphic Hymns. They've been translated into English many times. In this new collection of translations, from noted magician and pagan teacher Sara L. Mastros, the hymns come alive for the modern pagan. In addition to her inspired translations, this book also contains fascinating historical and social commentary on the hymns from a modern, feminist, pagan viewpoint, as well as spells and devotional practices for modern worshippers of the Greek gods, and brilliant "color your own" ikons.

Book excerpt: In Orphic Hymns Grimoire, Sara L. Mastros transforms the devotional hymns of Orpheus, the oracular hero of ancient Greece, into a functional, working grimoire for contemporary magicians. The Orphic Hymns have inspired generations of poets, musicians, and playwrights as exemplars of archaic mytho-poetry. In her bold translations, Mastros stays true to the original intent and beauty of the hymns while adding her own contemporary flair. In addition to the new translations, this book also contains fascinating historical and social commentary on the hymns from a feminist, pagan viewpoint, as well as spells and devotional practices for votaries of the Greek gods, and brilliant color-your own-ikons. This second edition includes new commentary and more than eighty ikon illustrations. Additionally, Mastros provides many ideas for deploying the ikons in spellcraft as well as spells that use the ikons themselves.

Book excerpt: The best-selling English translation of the mysterious and cosmic Greek poetry known as the Orphic Hymns. At the very beginnings of the Archaic Age, the great singer Orpheus taught a new religion that centered around the immortality of the human soul and its journey after death. He felt that achieving purity by avoiding meat and refraining from committing harm further promoted the pursuit of a peaceful life. Elements of the worship of Dionysus, such as shape-shifting and ritualistic ecstasy, were fused with Orphic beliefs to produce a powerful and illuminating new religion that found expression in the mystery cults. Practitioners of this new religion composed a great body of poetry, much of which is translated in The Orphic Hymns. The hymns presented in this book were anonymously composed somewhere in Asia Minor, most likely in the middle of the third century AD. At this turbulent time, the Hellenic past was fighting for its survival, while the new Christian faith was spreading everywhere. The Orphic Hymns thus reflect a pious spirituality in the form of traditional literary conventions. The hymns themselves are devoted to specific divinities as well as to cosmic elements. Prefaced with offerings, strings of epithets invoke the various attributes of the divinity and prayers ask for peace and health to the initiate. Apostolos N. Athanassakis and Benjamin M. Wolkow have produced an accurate and elegant translation accompanied by rich commentary.

Book The Magic of the Orphic Hymns

Download or read book The Magic of the Orphic Hymns written by Tamra Lucid and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-08-22 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recaptures the magical vitality of the original Orphic Hymns • Presents literary translations of the teletai that restore important esoteric details and correspondences about the being or deity to which each hymn is addressed • Includes messages inscribed on golden leaves meant to be passports for the dead as well as a reinvention of a lost hymn to Number that preserves the original mystical intent of the teletai • Explores the obscure origins and the evolution of the Orpheus myth, revealing a profound influence on countercultures throughout Western history As famous Renaissance philosopher Marsilio Ficino wrote, “No magic is more powerful than that of the Orphic Hymns.” These legendary teletai of Orpheus were not simply “hymns”—they were initiatic poems for meditation and ritual, magical, and ceremonial use, each one addressed to a specific deity, such as Athena or Zeus, or a virtue, such as Love, Justice, and Equality. Yet despite the mystical concepts underlying them, the original hymns were formulaic, creating an obstacle for translators. Recapturing the magical vitality that inspired mystery cults through the ages, Tamra Lucid and Ronnie Pontiac present new versions of the teletai that include important esoteric details and correspondences about the being or deity to which each hymn is addressed. The authors also include a new version of a lost hymn called “Number” and messages that were inscribed on golden leaves meant to be passports for the dead, reinventions that preserve the original magical intent and mysticism of the teletai. Revealing the power of the individual hymns to attune the reader to the sacred presence of the Orphic Mysteries and the higher order of nature, the authors also show how, taken together, the Orphic Hymns are a book of hours or a calendar of life, addressing every event, from birth to death, and walking us through all the experiences of human existence as necessary and holy.
