Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Birds: A Popular Introduction to Ornithology Of Natural History, in as concise a form as possible, a general view of the distribution of the feathered tribes, and of their uses and importance in Creation. The classification we have followed is that proposed by Mr. G. R. Gray in his impor tant work on the Genera of Birds, and is that now adopted in the arrangement of the ornithological collection in the British Museum, to the study of which it is hoped this volume will be a useful guide. The descriptions are selected as far as practicable from original sources, and will be found, notwithstanding the succinctness with which they are given, to embody a large amount of reliable information concerning the habits and mode of life of the various races treated of while the numerous engravings by eminent artists exhibit with clearness and fidelity the leading. Book Ornithology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ornithology Classic Reprint written by Alfred Newton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ornithology Two years after Ray's death, linn-nos, the great reformer of Natural History, was born, and in 1735 ap peared the first edition of the celebrated Systema Nat-urea. Successive editions of this work were produced under its author's supervision in 1740, 1748, 1758, and 1766. Impressed by the belief that verbosity was the bane of science, he carried terseness to an extreme which frequently created obscurity, and this in no branch of zoology more than in that which relates to Birds. Still the practice introduced by him Of assigning to each species a diagnosis by which it ought in theory to be distinguishable from any other known species, and of naming it by two words - the first being the generic and the second the specific term, was so manifest an improvement upon any thing which had previously obtained that the Linnaean method of differ entiation and nomenclature established itself before long in spite of all Opposition, and in principle became almost universally adopted. The opposition came of course from those who were habituated to the older state of things, and saw no evil in the cumbrous, half-descriptive half designative titles which had to be employed whenever a species was to be spoken of or written about. The supporters of the new method were the rising generation of naturalists, many of whose names have since become famous, but among them were some whose admiration of their chief carried them to a pitch of enthusiasm which now seems absurd. Careful as Linnaeus was in drawing up his definitions of groups, it was immediately seen that they occasionally were made to comprehend creatures whose characteristics contradicted the prescribed diagnosis. His chief glory lies in his having reduced, at least for a time, a chaos into order, and in his showing both by precept and practice that a name was not a definition. In his classifica tion of Birds he for the most part followed Ray, and where he departed from his model he seldom improved upon it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds: The Elements of Ornithology All Birds have feathers, and no such thing as a feather is possessed by any creature which is not a Bird. This character alone, therefore, suffices to define the whole Class. The uniformity of their structure is very remarkable. While some beasts, some reptiles, and some fishes have but a pair of limbs, and other reptiles and fishes have none, all Birds have two pairs - a pair of wings and apair of legs. Most beasts and reptiles have a long tail, while some are without any; but every existing Bird has a tail which, feathers apart, is short T. Some beasts, some reptiles, and some fishes are edentulous, while most have teeth; but no living Bird possesses such structures. Some beasts, some reptiles, and some fishes are eyeless but every Bird has a pair of eyes. Birds are eminently aerial creatures, and there are but very few which have no power of flight; while none of the living members of the other Classes can truly fly except Bats; though some ancient reptiles (pterodactyles) possessed a similar power. Although many birds are more or less aquatic in their habits, none are so completely so as either the Whales and Porpoises amongst beasts, or certain reptiles. Could he really be in earnest in asking the ques tion, or did he only mean to chaff me and test my knowledge of bird life? For I had just been tell ing him of my studies in ornithology. But the nonplussed expression on his face showed that he actually did not know the name of the bird, and so I answered, avoiding a patronizing tone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Natural History: Chiefly Ornithology Should it be remarked that I have commented somewhat severely on certain parts of the Bio graphy of Birds, I answer, that I should only have taken as much notice of that work as would have been necessary to prove that the new theory could not be depended upon, had not the partisans of the author given me ample cause of provocation. Had they continued under arms, it was my intention to review the whole of the Biography of Birds, together with the author's Introductory Address. The controversial papers which have appeared on different subjects in Mr. Loudon's Magazine are not included in these Essays. Had mine been introduced, those of my opponents must equally have been admitted, for the sake of perspicuity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Ornithology, Vol. 6: A Magazine Devoted Entirely to Birds We wish all our readers the best of success during the year 1906. May it bring many new admirers for our feathered friends, as well as increase the interest of those that are already devoted to their welfare. The President of our country is interested in the protection of our native birds and has caused a number of islands to be made into public reservations for breeding places for wild fowls; let each of us add our mite in the great work. Feed the birds when their natural food is scarce and protect them from their enemies, especially when they are nesting. We want to make this magazine just as interesting as we can to all our readers and we ask you all to co-operate with us. A wide-awake person rarely goes into the woods or fields without seeing some interesting phase of bird life; make notes of these and write them up and send them to us for others to read. Of course we are always glad to receive any suggestions as to how we can make any improvement. If you think any special departments would be of interest to the majority of our readers write and tell us so; we shall be pleased to adopt any feasible requests that may be made. Our supplements to be colored have hit a popular chord, and judging by the number received and the quality of the work, our country will not in the future find a lack of competent artists. We received 235 of the Bluebird pictures and many were exceptionally good, so that judging them was a difficult matter. We finally made the following three awards from about 25 of practically equal merit: 1st., Rosemary Hopkins. Cincinnati, O.; 2nd., George Gerald, Rosedale, Toronto; 3rd., Armand R. Tibbitts, Waukesho, Wis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the Nuttall Ornithological Club, 1876, Vol. 1: A Quarterly Journal of Ornithology The above are the principal differences, and together with Audubon's fine plate, which is a perfect facsimile of my bird, give a most emphatic contradiction to all assertions that Audu bon was unable to distinguish the difference between Bateo vul garis and what to him would have been a new bird. This noted ornithologist was constantly on the lookout for new species with which to embellish his book, and it is extremely improbable that he would have let such an opportunity escape him. The descriptive points given are enough to separate Audu bon's bird from all others, but as if to give more weight to his testimony we find him saying as a final to his article: When compared with European specimens, mine have the bill somewhat stronger; but in all other respects, including the scutella and scales of the feet and toes, and the structure of the wings and tail, the parts are similar. It will be noticed that he uses the plural mine, for before this was appended he had received another, also shot by Dr. Townsend, on the plains of the Snake River.
