Book Intervening Spaces

Download or read book Intervening Spaces written by Nycole Prowse and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-05-07 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intervening Spaces examines the interconnectedness between bodies, time and space - the oscillating and at times political impact that occurs when bodies and space engage in non-conventional ways. Bodies intervene with space, creating place. Likewise, space can reconceptualise notions of the subject-body. Such respatialisation does not occur in a temporal vacuum. The moment can be more significant than a millennia in producing new ways to see corporeal connections with space. Drawing on theorists as diverse as Foucault, Deleuze, Guattari, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, Lefebvre and Grosz, temporal and spatial dichotomies are dissolved, disrupted and interrupted via interventions—revealing new ways of inhabiting space. The volume crosses disciplines contributing to the fields of Sociology, Literature, Performance Arts, Visual Arts, Architecture and Urban Design. Contributors are Burcu Baykan, Pelin Dursun Çebi, Michelle Collins, Christobel Kelly, Anthi Kosma, Ana Carolina Lima e Ferreira, Katerina Mojanchevska, Clementine Monro, Katsuhiko Muramoto, Nycole Prowse, Shelley Smith, Nicolai Steinø and İklim Topaloğlu.

Book excerpt: The French artist Orlan is infamous for performances during which her body is surgically altered. In nine such performance surgeries, features from Greek goddesses painted by Botticelli, Gerard, Moreau, and an anonymous School of Fontainebleau artist, as well as from da Vinci's "Mona Lisa, were implanted into Orlan's face. During her surgical performances, viewers witness a material tampering with the relationship between the face and individual identity, the original and the constructed, a historical critique of the association of art with beauty and the female body. Responding to Orlan's definition of her performance surgeries as "carnal art," C. Jill O'Bryan considers how the artist's ever-fluctuating reconstructions of her face question idealized beauty and female identity, persuasively arguing that Orlan's surgically reinvented face succeeds in both reinforcing and breaking apart corporeal subjectivity and representation. O'Bryan contextualizes Orlan's operations within the centuries-long history of public dissections and surgeries, lavish anatomical illustrations created to draw the gaze into the opened anatomy, Artaud's "Theater of Cruelty" in the early twentieth century, and contemporary works and performances by Cindy Sherman, Hans Bellman, and Annie Sprinkle. A compelling blurring of the line between feminist theory and art criticism, O'Bryan's close examination of Orlan's performance surgeries complicates and reconfigures the notions of identity--and its relation to the body--at the very boundary dividing art from identity.

Book Culinary Tourism

  • Author : Lucy M. Long
  • Publisher : University Press of Kentucky
  • Release : 2013-07-24
  • ISBN : 0813143780
  • Pages : 520 pages

Download or read book Culinary Tourism written by Lucy M. Long and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2013-07-24 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Well-researched and original” essays on the intersection between food and adventure (Publishers Weekly). Culinary Tourism is the first book to consider food as both a destination and a means for tourism. The book’s contributors examine the many intersections of food, culture, and tourism in public and commercial contexts, in private and domestic settings, and around the world. The contributors argue that the sensory experience of eating provides people with a unique means of communication—whether they’re trying out a new kind of ethnic restaurant in their own town or the native cuisine of a place far from home. Editor Lucy Long explains how and why interest in foreign food is expanding tastes and leading to commercial profit in America, but the book also shows how tourism combines personal experiences with cultural and social attitudes toward food and the circumstances that allow for adventurous eating. “Contributors to the book are widely recognized food experts who encourage readers to venture outside the comforts of home and embark on new eating experiences.” —Lexington Herald-Leader
