Book Computers for Librarians

Download or read book Computers for Librarians written by Stuart J. Ferguson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers for Librarians is aimed primarily at students of library and information management and at those library and information service professionals who feel the need for a book that will give them a broad overview of the emerging electronic library. It takes a top-down approach, starting with applications such as the Internet, information sources and services, provision of access to information resources and library management systems, before looking at data management, computer systems and technology, data communications and networking, and library systems development. It also provides an interesting set of case studies, which help to put theoretical and technical issues into context. Computers for Librarians can be read as a survey of where we are in terms of the electronic library, but it is also intended as an educational resource, and includes self-learning aids such as learning objectives, keywords and review questions for each chapter.

Book Introduction to Cataloging and Classification

Download or read book Introduction to Cataloging and Classification written by Daniel N. Joudrey and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new edition of this best-selling textbook reintroduces the topic of library cataloging from a fresh, modern perspective. Not many books merit an eleventh edition, but this popular text does. Newly updated, Introduction to Cataloging and Classification provides an introduction to descriptive cataloging based on contemporary standards, explaining the basic tenets to readers without previous experience, as well as to those who merely want a better understanding of the process as it exists today. The text opens with the foundations of cataloging, then moves to specific details and subject matter such as Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR), Functional Requirements for Authority Data (FRAD), the International Cataloging Principles (ICP), and RDA. Unlike other texts, the book doesn't presume a close familiarity with the MARC bibliographic or authorities formats; ALA's Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd Edition, revised (AACR2R); or the International Standard Bibliographic Description (ISBD). Subject access to library materials is covered in sufficient depth to make the reader comfortable with the principles and practices of subject cataloging and classification. In addition, the book introduces MARC, BIBFRAME, and other approaches used to communicate and display bibliographic data. Discussions of formatting, presentation, and administrative issues complete the book; questions useful for review and study appear at the end of each chapter.

Book Cooperative Cataloging

Download or read book Cooperative Cataloging written by Rebecca Mugridge and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-02 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by some of the most experienced practitioners and managers in the field of cataloging, this collection examines cooperative cataloging activities in its many forms. Containing both case studies and research studies, as well as opinion pieces, it explores the benefits and cost-effectiveness of cooperative cataloging programs such as the OCLC Enhance program, and Program for Cooperative Cataloging programs such as BIBCO, CONSER, NACO, and SACO. It also provides an introduction to less well-known cooperative efforts such as the Library of Congress National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections (NUCMC) and the ISSN Register. Cooperative cataloging efforts offer creative opportunities for managers and administrators as they attempt to provide effective intellectual access to the rapidly increasing number of publications acquired by our libraries. This book will help such professionals to evaluate the effectiveness of cooperative efforts and apply them in their own unique circumstances. This book was published as a special issue in Cataloging & Classification Quarterly.

Book Cataloging and Classification

Download or read book Cataloging and Classification written by Athena Salaba and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-07-24 with total page 791 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The new edition of this essential work has raised the bar on an already excellent text about cataloguing." - Library Journal, Starred Review The fifth edition of the classic Cataloging and Classification covers the analysis and representation of methods used in describing, organizing, and providing access to resources made available in or through libraries. Since the last edition, there have new developments in cataloging, with the introduction of the IFLA Library Reference Model (LRM) and the new, official RDA, following the 3R Project. This text presents the essence of library cataloging and classification in terms of four basic functions: descriptive cataloging, authority work, subject access, and classification. Within this framework, content has been re-organized, all chapters have been rewritten, and new chapters have been introduced to incorporate the changes that have occurred during the interval between the four and fifth editions. In each part, the historical development and underlying principles of the retrieval mechanism at issue are treated first, because these are considered essential to an understanding of cataloging and classification. Discussion and examples of provisions in the standards and tools are then presented to illustrate the operations covered in each chapter. Divided into seven parts—a general overview; record production and structure, encoding formats, and metadata records; RDA (original and official); subject access and controlled vocabularies; the organization of library resources; encoding & records of bibliographic and authority data; and cataloging ethics--this book includes lists of the standards and tools used in the preparation and processing of cataloging records covered, lists of RDA elements, and sample records. Its companion website with interactive learning activities and supplementary materials located at catclassintro.org make it a true multimedia tool.

Book Weaving Libraries into the Web

Download or read book Weaving Libraries into the Web written by Jay Jordan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 1997 found the members of the OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) cooperative in an expansive mood. More than 1,000 library leaders attended the OCLC President’s Luncheon in San Francisco, where they celebrated OCLC’s 30th anniversary. There were more than 25,000 libraries participating in the cooperative, including nearly 3,000 libraries in 62 countries outside the U.S., and the WorldCat database contained more than 37 million bibliographic records. Over the next ten years, the global digital library would indeed emerge, but in a form that few could have predicted. Against a backdrop of continuous technological change and the rapid growth of the Internet, the OCLC cooperative’s WorldCat database continued to grow and was a central theme of the past decade. As the chapters in this book show, OCLC’s chartered objectives of furthering access to the world’s information and reducing the rate of rising library costs continue to resonate among libraries and librarians, as the OCLC cooperative enters its fifth decade. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Library Administration.
