Book Field Tests of the Cucaracha Formation Panama Canal 1942 1946

Download or read book Field Tests of the Cucaracha Formation Panama Canal 1942 1946 written by Carneal K. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes and presents the results of field studies of shales of the Cucaracha formation conducted during 1942-1946 by the Special Engineering Division of The Panama Canal Company in connection with the design of the Third Locks Project. Geology of the area in the vicinity of the then-proposed New Pedro Miguel Lock where the field studies were made, as presented in this report, was based on a review of geological studies available at the time of the tests supplemented by more recent studies and exploration of the Cucaracha formation by geologists of The Panama Canal Company and the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station. Measurements were made of structure settlements, settlements adjacent to the structure up to 40 ft away, and pressures immediately beneath the base of the structure. Recommendations made by a board of consultant in February 1945 following review of the test results are included in this report. The data indicate that settlement of large structures on Cucaracha clay shales could be higher than anticipated in 1945. It is recommended that analyses be made of the test data using present-day analytical methods.

Book Principles of Engineering Geology

Download or read book Principles of Engineering Geology written by P.B. Attewell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1075 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Engineering geology' is one of those terms that invite definition. The American Geological Institute, for example, has expanded the term to mean 'the application of the geological sciences to engineering practice for the purpose of assuring that the geological factors affecting the location, design, construction, operation and mainten ance of engineering works are recognized and adequately provided for'. It has also been defined by W. R. Judd in the McGraw-Hill Encyclopaedia of Science and Technology as 'the application of education and experience in geology and other geosciences to solve geological problems posed by civil engineering structures'. Judd goes on to specify those branches of the geological or geo-sciences as surface (or surficial) geology, structural/fabric geology, geohydro logy, geophysics, soil and rock mechanics. Soil mechanics is firmly included as a geological science in spite of the perhaps rather unfortunate trends over the years (now happily being reversed) towards purely mechanistic analyses which may well provide acceptable solutions for only the simplest geology. Many subjects evolve through their subject areas from an interdisciplinary background and it is just such instances that pose the greatest difficulties of definition. Since the form of educational development experienced by the practitioners of the subject ulti mately bears quite strongly upon the corporate concept of the term 'engineering geology', it is useful briefly to consider that educational background.

Book excerpt: Developments in Geotechnical Engineering, Vol. 14B: Rockslides and Avalanches, 2: Engineering Sites focuses on initiatives to offer a foundation for studies of mass movement phenomena in the Western Hemisphere. The selection first takes a look at the contributions of Josef Stini to engineering, geology, and slope movement investigations, the concept of Karl Terzhagi on rockslides, and the contributions of Laurits Bjerrum to the mechanics of rockslides. Concerns cover stability of hard rock slopes, influence of geological details, relation between slide process and remedial treatment, water pressure in pores and fractures, slope creep, rockslides, and avalanches, and early warning of an impending slide. The publication then examines rock slope movements with hydroelectric power projects in Mexico, Bighorn Reservoir slides in Montana, U.S.A., rock avalanche and wave at Chungar, Peru, and wedge rockslides in Libby Dam and Lake Koocanusa in Montana. The text examines Hogarth Pit slope failure in Ontario, Canada, pit slope performance in shale in Wyoming U.S.A., Twin Buttes pit slope failure in Arizona, U.S.A., and the Prime Mine slope failure in Arizona, U.S.A. Discussions focus on stability analyses, description of slope failures, cause of failure, remedial actions, geotechnical properties of tertiary shales, and subsequent slope performance. The selection is a valuable source of data for researchers interested in rockslides and avalanches.

Book Soil Strength and Slope Stability

Download or read book Soil Strength and Slope Stability written by J. Michael Duncan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-09-22 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive guide to the critical issue of slope stability and safety Soil Strength and Slope Stability, Second Edition presents the latest thinking and techniques in the assessment of natural and man-made slopes, and the factors that cause them to survive or crumble. Using clear, concise language and practical examples, the book explains the practical aspects of geotechnical engineering as applied to slopes and embankments. The new second edition includes a thorough discussion on the use of analysis software, providing the background to understand what the software is doing, along with several methods of manual analysis that allow readers to verify software results. The book also includes a new case study about Hurricane Katrina failures at 17th Street and London Avenue Canal, plus additional case studies that frame the principles and techniques described. Slope stability is a critical element of geotechnical engineering, involved in virtually every civil engineering project, especially highway development. Soil Strength and Slope Stability fills the gap in industry literature by providing practical information on the subject without including extraneous theory that may distract from the application. This balanced approach provides clear guidance for professionals in the field, while remaining comprehensive enough for use as a graduate-level text. Topics include: Mechanics of soil and limit equilibrium procedures Analyzing slope stability, rapid drawdown, and partial consolidation Safety, reliability, and stability analyses Reinforced slopes, stabilization, and repair The book also describes examples and causes of slope failure and stability conditions for analysis, and includes an appendix of slope stability charts. Given how vital slope stability is to public safety, a comprehensive resource for analysis and practical action is a valuable tool. Soil Strength and Slope Stability is the definitive guide to the subject, proving useful both in the classroom and in the field.
