Book Origin and History of the Horse Classic Reprint

Download or read book Origin and History of the Horse Classic Reprint written by Fairfield Osborn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin and History of the Horse The subject of the origin and history of the horse is not a simple one. It is a very complex one, because every scientific problem, like every financial problem, has its method of attack - from a number of different points of view. The first of the points to consider is that of the horse as the most perfect animal machine among the quadrupeds. Second, we shall see how this ma chine by purely natural processes evolved from comparatively small and simple beginnings. So we shall follow the evolution of a number of structures which make up this machine, and of the horse as a whole. Third, we shall look at the races, the wild breeds of the family of horses, as they are found in Asia and Africa today, because it is possible that some of these breeds throw some considerable light upon the most interesting of questions, the origin and history of this ani mal. Fourth, we come to the point where the history of the horse touches the history of man, and that was a turning point in the history of civilization, be cause, if you will reflect a moment, when man discovered the use of the horse, he discovered a mechanism which he could turn to his service in the same way as we use steam and electricity today. The horse became a means of civilization, of exploration and intercommunication. So, the history of the horse as a use ful animal to man comes in as the third or fourth topic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse: A Study in Natural History The works to be comprised in this Series are in tended to give on each subject the information which an intelligent layman might wish to possess. They are not primarily intended for the young, nor for the specialist, though even to him they will doubtless be often useful in supplying references, or suggesting lines of research. Each book will be complete in itself, care, however, being taken that while the books do not overlap, they supplement each other; and while scientific in treat ment, they will be, as far as possible, presented in simple language, divested of needless technicalities. The rapid progress of science has made it more and more difficult, and renders it now quite impossible, to master the works which appear, almost daily, on various branches of science, or to keep up with the proceedings of our numerous Scientific Societies. Book Horse Shoes and Horse Shoeing

Download or read book Horse Shoes and Horse Shoeing written by George Fleming and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Horse-Shoes and Horse-Shoeing: Their Origin, History, Uses, and Abuses To all who possess an interest in or a love for the horse, but little apology will be required in offering for their acceptance a work like the present. The result of much labour and research, it is an attempt to trace, for the first time in England, the origin and history of the art of shoeing horses. Since the publication, in 1831, of Bracy Clark's essay 'On the Knowledge of the Ancients respecting the Art of Shoeing the Horse, ' the science of ethnological archaeology has made wonderful progress in throwing light upon much that was obscure, or altogether lost, in the darkness of pre-historic, and even historic times, and the manners and customs of ancient peoples have been largely elucidated by it. Some of its rays have been incidentally shed upon the early condition of this apparently humble handicraft, tending considerably to modify, or altogether disprove, the opinions held by various authorities as to the antiquity of horse-shoeing. Though but of minor importance in archaeology, yet the discussion of this subject has attracted much notice at times, and engaged a large share of attention on the part of men much celebrated as antiquarians and scholars. And the origin of the art, though of comparatively little moment in an utilitarian point of view, is nevertheless one of those interesting subjects which will always prove interesting to the anthropologist and archaeologist. To make this portion of the work complete, every discovery of relics connected with the subject has been inquired into, when possible, and no pains have been spared in the investigation of its unwritten story. Download or read book Evolution of the Horse In Two Parts written by W. D. Matthew and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution of the Horse; In Two Parts: Evolution of the Horse in Nature; The Horse Under Domestication: Its Origin and the Structure and Growth of the Teeth The horse is distinguished from all other animals now living by the fact that he has but one toe on each foot. Comparison with other ani mals shows that this toe is the third or middle digit of the foot. The hoof corresponds to the nail of a man or the claw of a dog or cat, and is broad ened out to afford a firm, strong support on which the whole weight of the animal rests. Behind the cannon bone of the foot are two slender little bones, one on each side, called 'splint bones. These represent the second and fourth digits of other animals, but they do not show on the surface and there is nothing like a separate toe. So that the horse may be said to be an animal that walks on its middle finger nail, all the other fingers having disappeared. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England's Horses for Peace and War: Their Origin, Improvement and Scarcity Writers of varied classes of opinions have dealt with it through works of standard literature, and the medium of the press and periodicals. Men capable of handling it in its varied ramifications and details have devoted energy and ability to exhaustive essays for the last quarter of a century on the subject of our general and military horse supply. From such utilitarian and highly commendable efforts, we have at length aroused the consideration of the great and powerful, without, up to the present, any result beyond that of incontestable practical confirmation of the warnings of writers on the subject. The Royal Commission granted upon Lord Rosebery's motion in the House of Lords, have discovered, with mathematical accuracy, the inadequacy of supply to our demand; but, unfortunately, nothing has been yet done, or suggested, to rectify so alarming and inconvenient a state of things.
