Book The Perceived Influence of Lasallian Mission Formation Programs on Participants from the District of San Francisco New Orleans

Download or read book The Perceived Influence of Lasallian Mission Formation Programs on Participants from the District of San Francisco New Orleans written by Gary Cannon and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Perceived Influence of Lasallian Mission Formation Programs on Participants from the District of San Francisco New Orleans The mission of Catholic education involves the faith formation and the integral human development of individuals (Second Vatican Council, 1965a). The Catholic Church recognizes that the realization of this two-fold mission, religious and academic, is primarily dependent upon school faculty and staff. The De La Salle Christian Brothers have made mission formation of faculty and staff one of their principal aims. Within the United States, they provide a variety of Regional and District formation programs to assist their faculty and staff advance the mission of Lasallian Catholic education. To date, limited empirical data exists concerning these formation programs. This study sought to address that limitation. This study investigated the perceptions of Lasallian Catholic school faculty and staff of the San Francisco New Orleans District (SFNO District) regarding their mission formation experiences between 2005 and 2015. The quantitative study utilized a researcher-designed online survey. One hundred sixty-six faculty and staff from 16 Lasallian Catholic secondary schools who attended the nine Lasallian mission formation programs under review were invited to participate in this research, and 73% (N=121) accepted and completed the online survey. Most participants (92%) were lay men and women. The study’s findings suggest that the Catholic Church’s call for faculty and staff to be prepared and formed both spiritually and professionally is being addressed by the SFNO District Christian Brothers. The findings also confirmed the influence of the Lasallian Regional and District mission formation programs upon the study’s participants. Data revealed that the respondents perceived the programs experienced to be “very influential” on their ability to address the Five Core Principals of Lasallian education in their schools. Also, respondents considered the programs under review to be recommendable to a colleague. Data found that 45% of the respondents attended one mission formation program while 55% attended two or more programs during the time period examined. However, less than 20% of all faculty and staff in the 16 Lasallian secondary schools had attended one of the nine mission formation programs under review during this time period. This finding suggests that Lasallian mission formation in the SFNO District is needed in the future.

The researcher constructed a survey that assessed feelings on Lasallian association in regards to the Lasallian Educational Mission, Lasallian Family, and Being Lasallian. All staff members were invited to participate in a professional learning community that would dialogue and determine action to assist in strengthening and sustaining association. The survey results and professional learning community concluded there is a strong sense of association and created an action plan that would assist the school in sustaining and strengthening association"--Abstract, p. 1.

Book To Touch Hearts Pedagogical Spirituality and St John Baptist de La Salle

Download or read book To Touch Hearts Pedagogical Spirituality and St John Baptist de La Salle written by George Van Grieken FSC and published by George Van Grieken FSC. This book was released on 2011-03-25 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work addresses Lasallian pedagogical spirituality, defined as the dynamic integration of foundational convictions, basic operative commitments, and consistent practices permeating the teaching dimensions of schools that claim the heritage of St. John Baptist de La Salle and the Brothers of the Christian Schools. The dissertation examines the content of Lasallian pedagogical spirituality and proposes measures for realizing its vitality within Lasallian school life. Particular pedagogical characteristics, components of an overall pedagogical spirituality, are present in the original charism of St. John Baptist de La Salle. The basic operative commitments that underlie those characteristics ought to be integrally realized in a pedagogy that claims to be Lasallian and wholly incorporated in the formation of Lasallian educators. There are three sequential parts to the dissertation: 1) an overview of the St. John Baptist de La Salle's context and personal history, 2) an overview of his literature followed by an analysis of aspects of Lasallian pedagogical spirituality evidenced in that literature according to five pedagogical elements: the teacher, the student, the teacher/student relationship, the activity of teaching, and the school in general, and 3) a contemporary articulation of the Lasallian basic operative commitments that characterize his spirituality today, along with their implications for the formation of Lasallian educators Extrapolating from the life and writings of De La Salle, ten Lasallian operative commitments are proposed. The commitments are presented in the form of attributes that may be applied to Lasallian institutions and their pedagogical components: 1) centered in and nurtured by the life of faith, 2) trusting providence in discerning God's will, 3) with creativity and fortitude, 4) through the agency the Holy Spirit, 5) incarnating Christian paradigms & dynamics, 6) with practical orientation, 7) devoted to education, accessible and comprehensive, 8) committed to the poor, 9) working in association, 10) expressing a lay vocation. The dissertation concludes by presenting teacher formation structures and strategies for introducing Lasallian operative commitments and by providing a Lasallian Mission and Vision Statement.
