Book excerpt: This cross-sectional exploratory study examines the role of student organization involvement in alumni giving at a large Midwestern university and offers insight into development strategies for the university. The extant literature shows a link between student involvement and alumni giving but the specific mechanism by which this occurs is unclear. Grounded in resource dependency theory and organizational identification theory, the author identified greek letter organizations and religious student organizations ("external student organizations") as unique in that they are affiliated with the university but funded, managed and staffed by non-university employees, and they solicit donations from students and alumni that fund their operations, not the university’s. Using data from a university alumni survey program called the “Mascot Room” for the purposes of this dissertation, the author surveyed respondents who were participants in these two types of student organizations and compared their giving records to their peers. The findings include that while participation in greek letter organizations increases the likelihood of those students being alumni donors, those students are also likely to direct some of their charitable giving away from the university. Those students who did donate to their greek letter organization were more likely to be university donors. The author uses the results to call for focusing targeted development efforts on this subset of students and for collaboration between development and student affairs officers to engage with them as undergraduates.

Book excerpt: With the number of alumni of distance programs increasing, and the decline of public funding for higher education continuing, overlooking engaging these constituents both as active members within the alumni community and as donors will likely be progressively detrimental to institutions as time progresses. The purpose of this study was to investigate how alumni of distance programs at a public flagship university behave with regards to organizational identity and the supportive behaviors of promotion and financial giving to the institution. The study examined the role of the elements of perceived institutional prestige and satisfaction in influencing organizational identity in the population of distance alumni. Also, the study explored the potential effect of demographic factors on the organizational identity of distance alumni. This study employed both survey research methods and utilized institutional data housed within the Office of Advancement to answer the research questions. The overarching finding of this study is that distance alumni do have significant organizational identity to the institution with similar results to previous research conducted with traditional alumni. The supportive behaviors of financial giving and promoting the institution are influenced by the organizational identity of distance alumni. Additionally, the elements of institutional prestige and satisfaction are influencing factors on organizational identity of distance alumni. Other elements, including age, college of graduation, level of degree, and holding multiple degrees from the institution, were found to impact levels of organizational identity in distance alumni. Findings suggest the institution could benefit from devoting strategic resources to developing exceptional distance degree programs for current students, while also exploring facilitating meaningful engagement and community for both current distance students and alumni of distance programs in order to raise organizational identity in the distance population. Additionally, soliciting distance alumni with appropriate giving initiatives could reduce the number of non-donors.

Book excerpt: As graduate school enrollment continues to grow and more graduate institutions become responsible for their own fundraising efforts, attention to the specific context of graduate and professional school fundraising will be increasingly important. This study sought to identify the primary motivations of graduate alumni to make financial gifts to their graduate alma maters. Secondarily, it explored how prior experiences with undergraduate institutions, particularly through the lens of research related to organizational identification, affected their giving behavior. Data gathered from alumni and development staff interviews at four graduate theological institutions indicated 11 distinct themes that could describe the variety of giving motivations mentioned by alumni. At the individual level, alumni were found to have a cluster of motivational themes, typically three to six themes, that they described as influencing their giving behavior. The themes of mission, involvement, and vocational alignment appeared in alumni motivation clusters more frequently than others. Additionally, each institution had a particular motivation that was mentioned more prominently than others, leading to the conclusion that institutions are a major influencer on the motivations of their alumni. Nearly all of the alumni not only gave equally or more frequently to their graduate alma mater than their undergraduate alma mater, they also reported equal or greater identification with their graduate alma mater. This affirms the prior research of Mael and Ashforth (1992) that organizational identity is a significant contributor to alumni giving and that having attended other institutions is not detrimental to the formation of a graduate school identity. Overall, this study demonstrated that identifying the giving motivations of graduate alumni can be an important step in crafting strategies for effective alumni fundraising. Given the discrete set and limited range of possible motivations, graduate institutions similar to those in this study would be able to identify both the primary motivations of their alumni donors as well as the motivations unique to their own institutional identity. With that knowledge, they would then be able to cultivate alumni as donors in ways that are more engaging, relational, and authentic.

Book excerpt: Colleges and universities depend heavily on alumni participation in the areas of financial contributions, positive advertising, and student recruitment. As higher education institutions increase the number of fully online programs, it is important to ensure that students feel a sense of connectedness to the university. The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a correlation between non-traditional, online, undergraduate students’ sense of connectedness to their college and their subsequent interest in alumni participation after graduation. This research provides information that would fill a gap in the literature on the correlation between perceptions of identity when related to a university that they attended completely online as a non-traditional student and its impact on their interest in alumni participation. The non-traditional graduate sample (N=110) provided a population from which to collect data by the use of two online surveys, the Organizational Identity, Distinctiveness, and Prestige Scale (OIDPS) and the Alumni Interest Survey (AIS), sent out by email through the university alumni association. Pearson Product-Moment was conducted to determine if a correlation existed between online graduates’ sense of connectedness to their institution and their subsequent interest in alumni participation. Further, the sample was then looked at from a gender perspective to determine if there was a difference between males and females. All three hypotheses were found to have a statistically significant correlation. Recommendations for future research are to determine if the same results are true at non-religious based universities who also offer completely online degree programs, as well as conducting a qualitative study to determine what non-traditional online students are looking for from their university alumni association participation.

Book excerpt: Each year, charitable giving to United States postsecondary education provides essential resources in maintaining America edge as one of the top higher education systems in the world. The importance of financial giving at the college and university level continues to grow on an annual basis as governmental support for higher education has declined over the last three decades. In response to the reduction in government support for higher education, institutions have increasingly turned to private donors, corporations and graduates to supplement this revenue loss. One of the largest sources of external financial contributions comes from alumni, which has led schools across the country to focus on better ways to build relationships with graduates. Studies focusing on charitable giving in higher education demonstrate a positive relationship between organizational identification with the propensity for alumni to give back to their alma mater. Research shows that engagement through organizational identification and satisfaction positively relates to giving and other prosocial behaviors. In addition, studies describe how big-time college athletics plays a part in creating a sense of community that transcends the participants of the sports, creating a campus culture that institutions rally around. At same time, interest in following college sports continues to increase, evidenced by the massive NCAA television contracts reaching billions of dollars. In higher education literature, research on intercollegiate athletic giving generally focuses on the relationship between winning athletic teams and gifts or on the motivations for donors to give specifically to athletics. Few studies investigate the indirect impact of college sports in providing an opportunity to become engaged with an institution, which leads to giving and other prosocial acts such as volunteering, attending events and serving in advisory roles. With the enormous interest in intercollegiate sports and the increasing need for higher education institutions to garner more external financial support, this study investigates the impact of intercollegiate athletics in relationship to prosocial behaviors among alumni. Additionally, the study focuses on a specific group of postsecondary institutions, examining schools at the NCAA Division II level, as current literature tends to study only schools at the NCAA Division I and III levels.
