Book excerpt: Contained within the pages of this two volume set are hundreds of amazing true short stories. Relive the adventures and exciting day-to-day experiences of the early pioneers who walked 2,000 miles on the Oregon Trail to the new land of their dreams--Oregon. Imagine the hardships they endured during the six to seven months in the wilderness: deadly diseases, attacks by Indians and wild animals, broken down covered wagons, crippling accidents, choking dust, rutted and muddy mountain trails, rushing rivers, and sudden snowstorms. The threat of their livestock being stolen or stampeded, the lack of suitable grass for their animals, drowning, and the shortage of their own food and clean water supply was a constant worry for these determined pioneers. Death took its toll on these families. Thousands of hastily dug graves lined the trail. It is estimated that fifty-three thousand brave souls had successfully made the adventurous journey by the year 1860. Some even being born along the way. Before the white man brought diseases, alcohol, and firearms, the Indian population numbered in the tens of thousands with nearly one hundred tribes and bands. By 1860, less than two thousand Indians could be found living in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. From late summer into early winter a continuous stream of exhausted, near-starving wagon-train pioneers poured into Oregon and Washington. Remember, that once they arrived they had to build a rustic log cabin, shelter for their livestock, a hole dug for the outhouse, land cleared, the fertile land plowed and prepared for planting crops (that wouldn't be harvested for another year) from precious, secret caches of vegetable seeds, grains, and tubers carefully packed for the journey and hidden in flour bags and bedding. Survival became the primary objective, but they occasionally had a little fun and, of course, romance. These are the stories they told their friends and attentive grandchildren. The stories they lived and shared are the stories we read today. Let us not forget what they did. Gentry W. Cutsforth

Book excerpt: Contained within the pages of this two volume set are hundreds of short stories retelling the history and exciting day-to-day experiences of the early Oregon Trail Pioneers. These stories were passed down to their family descendants and printed in the Sunday Oregonian newspapers in 1935-36. David W. Hazen, Staff Writer, The Oregonian, started the popular series and named it "Oregon or Bust". Additional articles are included in the books about the Indian Wars; the Gold Rush in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho; the Outlaws and Murderers that ravaged the Oregon Country; the Vigilantes who rounded up the lawless and "hung 'em high"; articles about several Northwest Empire Builders; the story of a pioneer woman who's 3 needles helped to built a university in Oregon; and one revealing how the human body is affected by the horrible effects of Near Starvation, Dehydration, and Malnutrition. The sides of the canvas-covered wagons often had the hastily scrawled words "Oregon or Bust" painted on them, written to encourage the determined travelers who had heart-pumping dreams of getting to Oregon--or die trying. Thousands did both.

Download or read book The Cornbread Mafia written by James Higdon and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1987, Johnny Boone set out to grow and harvest one of the greatest outdoor marijuana crops in modern times. In doing so, he set into motion a series of events that defined him and his associates as the largest homegrown marijuana syndicate in American history, also known as the Cornbread Mafia. Author James Higdon—whose relationship with Johnny Boone, currently a federal fugitive, made him the first journalist subpoenaed under the Obama administration—takes readers back to the 1970s and ’80s and the clash between federal and local law enforcement and a band of Kentucky farmers with moonshine and pride in their bloodlines. By 1989 the task force assigned to take down men like Johnny Boone had arrested sixty-nine men and one woman from busts on twenty-nine farms in ten states, and seized two hundred tons of pot. Of the seventy individuals arrested, zero talked. How it all went down is a tale of Mafia-style storylines emanating from the Bluegrass State, and populated by Vietnam veterans and weed-loving characters caught up in Tarantino-level violence and heart-breaking altruism. Accompanied by a soundtrack of rock-and-roll and rhythm-and-blues, this work of dogged investigative journalism and history is told by Higdon in action-packed, colorful and riveting detail.
